Our comment from DrivingSchoolsTOP.co.uk about DVSA:
DVSA is widely recognized for its organized approach and professional examiners who strive to create a calm testing environment for applicants. Many users had an outstanding experience, particularly praising examiner Steve for his clear communication and reassuring demeanor during the motorcycle assessments.
Key highlights from customer feedback include:
- Outstanding organization and a friendly atmosphere.
- Examiners like Steve are highly regarded, making candidates feel comfortable and at ease during the tests.
- Positive feedback on clear instructions and helpful feedback after the assessments.
- Several candidates reported passing their tests on the first attempt due to the supportive environment fostered by the examiners.
However, some users expressed dissatisfaction with the inconsistency among examiners, suggesting that experiences can vary significantly. A few mentioned a lack of clarity or compassion from certain examiners, highlighting a need for more uniform professionalism across the board.
In conclusion, while DVSA has areas to improve regarding examiner consistency, many candidates have had positive experiences, particularly with specific staff members. It remains a popular choice for those seeking to obtain their driving or motorcycle license.
DVSA: Reviews
Negative experience: Went to wrong area due to lack of signage? Have signs on the roundabout!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely outstanding we'll organised.
Fantastic experience: I had the privilege of having Steve as my assigned examiner for both Mod 1 & Mod 2. He is by FAR the most clear, calm and reassuring person I have experienced on my journey to achieving my A license, by quite some margin. His professional yet approachable manner made me feel at ease throughout the assessment process which gave me the confidence to ride at and hopefully beyond the standard required. This man is a fantastic asset to the DVSA and an incredible asset to the motorcycling community. Protect him at all costs!
Negative experience: Let me tell you in short: you make mistake, you fail; you don't do mistake, you fail; Majority of examiners are idiots just failing everyone
Fantastic experience: I did my mod 1 here and would echo the sentiments of other reviewers that Stevie is an amazing examiner, really puts you at ease despite how nervous you are. It really helped knowing that the examiner was treating you like a human being, I understand they need to sometimes deliver bad news if you fail but having a rapport with the candidate is always a good thing.
Fantastic experience: Simeon is such a lovely examiner who made me feel at ease, confident and capable during a very nerve wrecking test. When I made a mistake, he was reassuring and tried to calm me down in the most pleasant way possible. 5+++ stars to him! Incredible work
Fantastic experience: Motorcycle examiner was calming and reasonable. Some useful feedback from the test was also welcome
Fantastic experience: I was expecting a cold machine man, haughty, devout of any human emotion. However nothing could be further from the truth. Steve was an absolute gentleman, I got him for both MOD 1 and MOD 2. I put myself under a lot of pressure over the years by listening to quite a few stories from people failing their MOD 1s, with either popping a foot down or hitting a cone. I want to make an argument that the MOD 1 is too penal however an eleventh person has died in a motorcycle accident this week on the UK roads. So I accept that the training and tests have to be rigorous. I can only imagine the number should the tests be incredibly easy. I passed MOD 1 with no minors. I passed MOD 2 with 5 faults I fear my nerves got the better of me. Steve was absolutely brilliant and incredibly professional. Although I have passed, I have a long way to go in motorcycling proficiency. A genuine heartfelt thanks to Steve.
Fantastic experience: Took my Mod 1 and Mod 2 tests here. My examiner, Steve, great guy, helped put me at ease, which helped me pass the Mod 1 & Mod 2 at the first attempt, Great experience all round. Thanks again
Fantastic experience: I was a bag of nerves but Stephen was very professional, relaxed, put me at ease, explained the tasks clearly and I finally got my Module 1 certificate.
Fantastic experience: Had my mod 1 here went there panicking Examiner is super nice Thanks steven you are cool
Fantastic experience: Sadly didn't pass my Mod1 today but Stevie was an absolute king who was super lovely and just overall, a pleasure to have an examiner! He gave me advice and was extremely fair as I didn't get fast enough on the hazard avoidance (my only issue too!). Nevermind! Didn't leave with a certificate but left with a smile on my face! I hope that man has as good of a day as he made mine! Edit: Passed Mod1 a few weeks ago and passed Mod2 today! I have never had an examiner as reassuring and kind as Stevie. I was VERY nervous but his calm voice eased me into the exam! There are some examiners that just don't care and Stevie is not one of them. He genuinely cares for your safety. I'm gonna miss him but I wish him safety, godspeed, and the very best.
Negative experience: Let me tell you in short: you make mistake, you fail; you don't do mistake, you fail; the examiners are mean, and would fail you without any reason (showed the driving recording from the dash cam to my instructor and there were no mistakes): failed for driving on a straight line, on first lane, speed limit and everything, speed limit "overtaking on left lane" and for giving away when turning right. yeah.... in short avoid this place as you will encounter examiners who fail you just for the sake of failing and you trying again if you do not believe me, check dvsa, driving statistics and you will see here a low pass rate (just because of this people who are doing a bad job at actually examine people or interact with them) and as you may already know, if you came here to check the reviews, you can not do anything to argue your result because UK RULES? such a bad experience
Fantastic experience: Had a great experience over the course of my Mod1 and Mod2 tests at Musselburgh Steven is such a great guy helps you settle and had such a laugh if i could give 10 stars i would thanks again Steven.
Fantastic experience: Thanks to Stevie on the motorcycle side of the centre. Puts candidates at ease , which is a special talent , when they are stressing and nervous over their test. Thanks again , and oh aye, they should definitely buy a power washer
Negative experience: Gave my test here. At first examiner did not used gps and told me to use road signs. Which were quite difficult to notice and see. Still i managed and on the top he came with grumpy face. Who does that? As we are already nervous and tensed. He failed me for 2 majors.
Negative experience: Would rate 0 if I could. The examiners are horrific and will pull things out of thin air to fail you on. Driving safely isn't enough to pass a test here, you need to be lucky that the examiner is feeling good that day.
Fantastic experience: Was really nervous had failed mod 1 bike test before ...stephen was my examiner on the day and settled my nerves gave me plenty off confidence and time top guy
Fantastic experience: Sat my mod 1 test here with high five training, Steven the examiner was great and spoke to me in a calm and respectful manner which definitely eased my nerves and no doubt helped me pass first time.
Fantastic experience: Just back from doing my motorcycle mod 1 test. The test was conducted by Mr Stephen Howarth. The Mr Howarth put me at ease right away before entering the gate, explaining the test overview very clearly. On entering the test area Mr Howarth explained every phase of the test very clearly. On conclusion of the test Mr Howarth gave feedback on the test and minor penalties incurred explaining the reasoning for his decisions and answered every query. A very fair and relaxed experience conducted by a very fair, polite and professional examiner
Fantastic experience: Passed my Mod 1 test here today with High Five Rider Training and Stevie the examiner was great. Nice guy and put you at ease right away.
Fantastic experience: Went through my mod1 test with high 5 training, was pretty nervous and weather didn’t help but Big Steve the examiner was great put me at ease and explained everything very clearly and have to really nice fella
Fantastic experience: Took my Mod 1 and Mod 2 tests here (Light Motorcycle). My examiner, Steve, helped put me at ease, which helped me pass the Mod 2 at the first attempt. By the time we hit the road, my mindset had changed from 'there's a good chance I'll fail' to 'this is an opportunity to demonstrate that I can drive a motorcycle safely and well'.
Fantastic experience: I had my Mod 1 at this centre twice; failed once and passed the second. I am probably the most nervous person on planet when it comes to tests but I have to say on both occasions the examiner Steven’s super friendly attitude, smile and professionalism made me feel absolutely at ease and focus on the test instead of being nervous. I failed the first attempt for a mistake I made but what matters is to keep training and trying.
Fantastic experience: Sat my Mod 1 here and Steven the examiner was brilliant from start to finish.
Negative experience: I was extremely dissatisfied with the manner in which my examiner, Pauline, conducted my test and acted towards me. I have done a driving test before at Musselburgh and in my first test the instructor was friendly to me and helped me relax whereas this examiner did not make an effort, she did not greet me or ask me how I was, and when my instructor tried to make conversation with her about her day she mentioned that she had almost got into an accident earlier that day. This made me very nervous and unsettled as I was obviously just about to do a test and the possibility of getting into an accident was now firmly in my mind, making me more scared than I already was. When we were about to set off she did not explain what I would be doing after the independent drive nor the manner in which the independent drive would be done (I was to follow road signs to certain places but in my last test I had a sat nav and this was clearly explained to me at first). During the test it was clear that she did not know the roads, the area or how to give the instructions. At one set of traffic lights she changed her direction to me three times: 'go left, no, go right, no, go left', and after this we went down a road for a while and she said 'oh, there should have been traffic lights here'. So it turned out that this examiner GOT LOST by giving me incorrect directions, it made the test 20 minutes longer than it should have been… When we had to pull in to the left, in my first test the instructor always gave me good notice and said 'when it's safe choose an appropriate place to pull over to the left', whereas this instructor gave me very late notice. This meant that when I was going down a road at 30mph she immediately and abruptly said 'pull over to the left in front of that car' and I barely had enough stopping distance to get in behind that car. This happened twice. At the end of the test when my instructor came over for the debrief, my instructor politely asked her to open the door but she said to my instructor 'get in the back, you'll be here for a while'. I found this very rude to both of us. There was one of my majors which I was confused about and I wanted to clarify what I had done wrong so I could work on it in my future lessons. I was telling her what I meant to do and she got very defensive and raised her voice at me. The way she gave the advice was not constructive as my first examiner said 'this is something you could work on' or 'don't do this next time' whereas this instructor said 'that's just not how you do it', 'why would you do that' and remarks like this.
Fantastic experience: I failed my driving test here, I have no issues with the driving examiner I got, the result was no surprise to me as I knew I had made the mistakes relayed back to me. The examiner was professional and helpful to me on the day.
Negative experience: Seems like a place to get humiliated and lose all your self confidence :-( Examiners seems to be on a mission to fail you
Negative experience: Can't share my thoughts here without swearing profusely. DVSA need to fire their CEO Ms Loveday Rider (who doesn't even have a licence) quickly. This main test centre in Edinburgh gives u very little opportunity to prepare properly due to strike action. Avoid if possible as all the clipboard guys here being watched like a Hawks by the bigwigs. No walk u thru it. Just jump on a 600 and go. One mistake. Your done.
Fantastic experience: I pass my test last Wednesday my examinator was very nice guy can't complain any bad behaviour he said about my faults in easy language I Was worried but all fine 100% recommend this test centre
Fantastic experience: Great examiner, Steven, put me at ease when I sat my Mod 1. I came with High Five rider training, Rab the instructor is great too.
Fantastic experience: Done my mod 1 motorcycle test here , the examiner couldn't have been more professional and calming, nevervs were completely settled as soon as he spoke to me,his name is Stevie, absolute gentleman of a man
Fantastic experience: The Examiner Steven was amazing doing my Mod 1, very professional and made me feel at ease and for that I passed with no minors. Great guy
Fantastic experience: Organised friendly and professional
Fantastic experience: Sat my mod 1 test at Musselburgh DVSA. The examiner Stevie was very calm and gave clear instructions. I would highly recommend Musselburgh DVSA for anyone sitting there Mod 1.
Fantastic experience: Sat my mod 1 with highfive rider training Stevie was very professional and I passed with no minors
Fantastic experience: Completed my Mod 1 training on Wednesday Stevie the DVSA's Driving Examiner explained everything so clearly and helped with my nerves .Great job Stevie
Fantastic experience: Completed my Mod 1 training today at Musselburgh (through High Five Training School) just wanted to thank Stevie for putting me at ease today, explaining everything so clearly and for making me smile when my nerves were high. Great job
Fantastic experience: The examiner was very polite and professional . After giving a quick explanation what was going to happen the examiner spent most of the time quitely and observing my driving and giving me simple instructions. And I passed my test at first attempt. really had a pleasant experience.
Fantastic experience: Had my driving test on a Saturday. Keith was very polite and explained all about the test in detail. Can not relate to the negative comments on here. I passed 1st time so don't read in to all the ones that failed and come on here to rant. Do everything you were taught by your instructor and you'll be fine.
Positive experience: Not that fun
Fantastic experience: Just done my mod1 ( high five rider training ) big thank you to Steven for the friendly welcome and easing my nerves and I passed bonus thanks
Fantastic experience: Just sat my Mod 1 here and just want to say how great Stevie was, puts you at ease right from the start and throughout the test. Many Thanks Stevie
Negative experience: don’t go to there, thanks
Fantastic experience: Plenty parking, clean & tidy. Professional examiners
Positive experience: I wouldnt suggesting having tea and tiffin in the middle of the test area - they get mad about that, otherwise it's a driver testing centre which, for my experience, is a fair one. It has toilets for those with a nervous bladder.
Fantastic experience: Did my mod1 and mod 2 here, Steven the examiner was friendly and smiling, really put me at ease. Great feedback at end of both tests and clear instructions at all times.
Positive experience: Nobody WANTS to go here. but its necessary if you want to pass your test. Examiners are all sound but theres nowhere to sit and wait for bike tests. So if you're doing it in winter youll be freezing your balls off They could do with a shelter, some seating n a wee snack van. Toilet would be magic tae. Bring a flask of tea they wont give you anything to eat or drink even if you're waiting for ages But then its the dvsa god forbid they actually provide some form of amenities for the people spending a fortune on repeated tests. This place is a nightmare. Thank **** I'll never need to go back there Theres gotta be a better way of doing tests than this.
Negative experience: Awful driving examiners, cannot speak clearly in English, change their minds during the test about which exit to use on roundabouts and then give you fails for their lack of clarity. Clearly would not pass even the best driver on first attempt as they want you to retake to gain extra fees. Racist overtones about language as well. Avoid at all costs, test can be taken in Currie with examiners who are strict but fair. Look at previous low ratings as this is a consistent theme and should be investigated by DVSA.
Negative experience: The examiner was very rude, considering that my first language is not English. He kept talking very fast and with a strong accent. He looked for a way to justify the reduction of points to make me fail the test. I've got a European drive license for 10 years and another 20 years in America. Just because I passed my test on America I cannot convert my license drive. That is very unfair!
Fantastic experience: Can't say anything bad at all about this place. They were competent and prompt in how they carried out their examination. Ross, my examiner, was friendly and absolutely fair in his evaluation. Happy to say I passed (and it's easier to give 5 stars when you are happy), but I wanted to leave feedback here, especially for Ross, who again, was really great.
Fantastic experience: Been struggling for a booking slot for my driving test in London. Waiting times backed up by +5 months. It is so bad that the system can't even find a slot for your to book. Anyways, I tried for those cancelled bookings and got one in Musselburgh. So I took a 14 hour Mega bus ride to Musselburgh for an 8.20 am test. Stayed over at a guest house and booked a test car with Arnold Clark. Arnold Clark, an otherwise poor gear in my perfect plan. They open at 8am and I arranged for an 8am pickups, leaving me with 20 minutes to make it to the test center Despite completing and providing all required documentation, I had even more documentary paperwork to fill out before they would let get the car. By the time this was done, it was 8.14. Just 6 mins to make it to the test center. Things were not looking good and boom there was the traffic, at this point I was almost in tears. Got to the test center at 8.27 am and checked with some lovely ladies outside who let me know, the examiner had been waiting for me for more than 5 mins. I rushed in, but atlas, it was too late. The examiner was not going to allow the test to go ahead. I was 7 mins late. I tried explaining myself, but his face was expressionless, blank. This guy could be the king of poker, and he was not going to be moved. He knew I came from London, he referred to me as such. Are you the guy from London. 14 hour bus ride and a motel sleepover just to miss the test by 7 mins. I was gutted. But, what can you do? That is the system. He told me should he proceed with the test he will be running late for his next booked test. Well, I thanked him and left. Devastated. Went back to Edinburgh bus station to wait for the 11.15 mega bus back to London, another 14 hour ride back. I just hope the driving examiner will find other people to be kind and understanding to him when he needs them to be, than he was to me. 28 hour round trip all wasted because he decided 7 mins was too much to let go. Why am I leaving 5 stars then you ask? Well because I don't blame him or the center. See, in my experience in life I have grown to understand that humans take delight in applying the rules than considering the results. We delight in showing our authority, than showing compassion, so I don't blame him. Not angry either. Just disappointed that my lack of good faith in humans was as ever consistently upheld on this fateful day.
Negative experience: They CANCEL my test without informing me in ADVANCE the other 3 persons going with examiners.they said the examiner is not available due to Covid 19 But I was waiting and the other Examiner went with 4th person for her test This is not fair I need my APPOINTMENT ASAP THANKS
Fantastic experience: Brilliant place to do your mod 1 and 2 keep you relaxed and very friendly I cant thank them enough highly recommended
Negative experience: Did my bike license there what a shambles. The examiners don't care about the individuals and the fact that we are in the pandemic, they just fail everyone for smallest things. Really inconsiderate and outdated mentality. Would suggest looking for another center.
Fantastic experience: Exelente servicio
Negative experience: failed for nothing, examiner was cold old woman with short hair...failed me for literally nothing! but then its her word against mine....:(
Positive experience: Nice and organised place. I've passed so what more can I ask for lol.
Fantastic experience: Good place where to go if you need to pass a driving test ;-)
Negative experience: Cold wet and windy due to covid
Fantastic experience: A very pleasant experience with a professional and thoughtful examiner. After a quick explanation of what was going to happen, the examiner spent most of the time quietly observing my driving and giving me simple instructions. I appreciated being able to focus on the driving and managed to pass on my first try.
Negative experience: I did my test here so many times and failed. The examiners are harsh and cold which didn’t help my anxiety. Went to currie and passed the first time there and am now a very careful driver. I wasted £100s here when I should have passed
Negative experience: Take your test elsewhere. Won't go there again. Not in a million freaking years!!!! Wish I could rate zero stars examiners are cold and they failed me numerous times when it could have been avoided. Won't be caught dead there ever again
Fantastic experience: Motorbike test examiner Stephen really puts you at your ease - a great experience with him. Strongly recommended.
Positive experience: Passed test on the second attempt. Key is to practice near the test centre as much as possible. From Scottish standards, the examiners are not very friendly but nothing sort of unprofessional too, gave a good brief of what will happen in the test and had a little chat while driving to ease up.
Fantastic experience: I haven't passed from the first time but I have passed the second. Both times examiner was very pleasant and friendly.
Negative experience: Those five star reviews are fishy. Avoid this place unless you want to waste your time and money. Not recommended, especially for bike riding tests. Money grabbin driving licence mafia.
Negative experience: Horrible place.Got a angry ,rude examiner.Worst person I seen or met in my entire life.I was told i failed ,in the beginning of my test, in the car park (for bay parking )of the test centre. I got a panic attack after this announcement right at the start.Who wouldn't? Never ever will i sit for my test there again and would never recommend my loved ones to even go near there.
Fantastic experience: Examiners were pleasant and understanding that we are all nervous. Excellent brief with a good understanding of what’s expected. The examiner was patient and direct, which is what you would expect. I have never met any examiner who was ‘angry’ or ‘rude’. I fear those with ‘1 star’ reviews didn’t pass(?) Go prepared on the advice of your Approved Driving Instructor and do exactly what you were taught.
Negative experience: Grim location and I had a very rude examiner. Highly recommend not wasting your time here.
Negative experience: Very angry driving instructor, you can recognize him by face, he dont smile at all, and look like security guard
Fantastic experience: They saw fit to pass me first time on both my driving and riding tests. Really nice bunch. Had a few 'technical' errors on my riding test which were sorted out quickly and professionally. No qualms at all. the Riding test centre is great too. Such a lovely space to practice for the Mod 1
Negative experience: This is the grimmest place I’ve been. It’s grey, boring, and full of angry signs with complaints passed on from local residents about badly-behaved driving instructors. Not that it matters too much - hopefully, you’ll be out of here and passing your test. Good luck!
