Matt - Professional Driving Instructor

Fantastic experience: Matt taught me how to drive, after having only a few lessons several years prior. He is experienced, knowledgeable and doesn’t just teach you how to pass your test, but teaches you how to be the best and safest driver on the road. I am so grateful to him for all of his support and thanks to his lessons I passed my test with only one minor, thank you!

Negative experience: Matt was nice enough and provided some good explanations of certain things I was confused about. However he seemed overly concerned about money, did not seem to consider the context of my driving history, was more focused on google maps than the actual lesson and did not seemed too fussed about my learning which was the sole purpose I had the lesson in the first place.

Having an instructor who knew the test area inside and out and what junctions/routes usually caught people out made me feel so much more confident going into my test! He even teaches things not on the test but needed for future driving such as motorway and parking in multi storey car parks.

Fantastic experience: It’s been two weeks since I passed my test, and since that day, I have been fully confident to drive alone, not only around town, but also when doing a 200 mile round-trip on the motorway and small country roads, partly in the dark and in thick fog! Matt has loads and loads of experience as an instructor, he is enthusiastic about his role, and knows the test route areas backwards, along with all the likely test pitfalls. At points he goes outside of the test areas and takes learners into the centre of town and onto the motorway, so you get experience of all aspects of driving – he isn’t just ‘teaching to the test’. As an older learner without access to a parent’s car to practice in, it took me longer to get to the point of passing my driving test than for the average teenager – but Matt really does know his stuff and is able to repeat the same instructions and explanations week in, week out, without sounding exasperated or bored, which is a real bonus. I’m not great at small talk and was worried that I could be stuck spending hours feeling awkward with an instructor – this absolutely wasn’t an issue with Matt, he was able to create an easy-going rapport even with me. Matt is reliable; over the course of more than a year I don’t recall any last-minute cancelled lessons (which I know can be an issue with some instructors). If he was ever running late, he kept me informed in good time, and always made sure that I got the entire lesson time. I passed my test second time around, after being careless in the first one. I felt fully ready to take it again and re-booked immediately – I believe that Matt’s judgement as to when I was ready to take my test was spot on. Paying for driving lessons is a big budget commitment. It took me many years to be in a financial position to be able pay for driving lessons, and it was disheartening to realise after several lessons with my first instructor that I had been wasting my money. I went from one extreme to the other by switching to Matt – learning with him, you will absolutely get your money’s worth. It takes longer to teach old dogs new tricks, but Matt had the patience to persist!

Fantastic experience: Matt is a fantastic instructor, I’ve had short experiences with previous ones before Covid and none made me feel as comfortable and confident as Matt, you really feel like you are getting the most out of the price you pay for lessons. He not only teaches what’s on a test but how to drive safely and confidently which makes the test seem like a breeze!

Fantastic experience: Matt is simply an excellent driving instructor. I passed my test first time, with three minors, after having lessons with him in summer 2020. I contacted Matt after having a few weeks with another instructor that had left my knowledge and confidence a bit shattered - Matt completely reversed that from the outset of the first lesson. Matt's lessons were very well structured and always had a clear plan to them. He was always calm, patient, informative and detailed in every explanation for anything we ever covered, and his experience shone through on every lesson. He is a very genuine and amiable guy, whose teaching goes above and beyond what is needed for the test; he ensures you have the skills and knowledge to not only be test ready, but the confidence to face the wider world of driving including motorways, city centres, multi-storey car parks and beyond. I felt that we built a good rapport and I genuinely looked forward to, and enjoyed, every lesson, every week. I cannot recommend him enough.

Fantastic experience: I originally started my driving lessons with the company called pass faster, I had around 3 lessons with a guy who had no patience, wasted my time and ruined confidence which made me hate every second of the lessons I had with him. I cancelled the rest of my driving lessons in order to find a better teacher. I had very little faith from that point and I worried about starting off with a new instructor, until I contacted Matt. The following week I had my first lesson, Matt gave me confidence and helped me get back on track with my driving skills. It was clear that Matt had a lot of knowledge within his 18 years of teaching pupils. Matts calm and friendly personality helped me stay calm in the most stressful situations. Matts teaching gave me gain a variety of skill to pass my driving test and helped me in the real world of being a novice driver. We even went over motorways and national speed limit A roads, which most driving instructors don’t seem to do until the pass plus scheme. The following week after passing my test I bought my first car, I have been driving for 6 months now and felt that with matts teaching I was prepared for the real world. Highly recommend, thanks Matt.

Negative experience: Not a good Instructor, he truly wasted my time. I thought he was genuine at first due to reviews, so I decided to take lessons with him, how misleading reviews can be. I had previously taken 25 lessons with a lady at Chris Kelly Driving School. She absolutely did not know how to teach but shout, I failed my first test with her, she set my confidence back but I could drive; I just needed to be test ready and confident on roundabouts etc. Hence, finding Matt, I thought him being an Independent Instructor with good reviews would be ideal! But was I wrong... Every lesson he was late, bar the first and I’m not talking 5 minutes, 15-20 minutes on average. He cancelled a recent lesson due to his daughter needing to be somewhere, but if I needed flexibility he would seem genuinely mad as he needed to find a ‘replacement’ ASAP. This is why I dropped him as my instructor, last week. So please don’t be fooled by his friendly persona. He only seemed to be concerned with my money, he just wanted me to keep taking lessons with him and I was not getting anywhere, still not confident enough and always felt belittled by him. I told him I know how to drive, I just want to be more confident in a few areas and he kind of brushed this aside, taught his syllabus like I was a first time driver. I had a 2 hour lessons each week for 3 months and I feel like I have got nowhere, still not test ready. He would waste lesson time by talking and would only let me drive for about 1 hour on average, quite ridiculous. At one point he made me cry, on my second lesson as he was shouting at me to do something I wasn’t comfortable in doing. Also, he never remembered anything from my previous lesson and would mistake me for his other pupils in terms of my progress, so I had to explain to him what I did in the previous lesson, every week, this would waste 10-15mins at the start of the lesson. His car always seemed to have problems also, which should’ve been a red flag. At one point he told me to pay him when I was in the car so he could fill up at the petrol station during my lesson time. He would always make sure to mention when to pay him. He ignored texts and just really wasn’t a genuine person. I really hope learners understand that reviews are not always as they seem to be. Please find a good instructor who wants you to pass and remember you are paying them! They should cater to you and not the other way around. Good luck!

He is calm, patient and easy going, and knows the area very well. Fantastic experience: I passed my first and ONLY driving test today (a month after the theory test). I just moved to Liverpool from Malaysia, my hometown where I started driving. Having experience for me had its disadvantages. I was prone to errors or bad habits; e.g. not keeping up to the speed limit. Matt helped me to improve these mistakes. He is gifted with a relaxed character, he is strict and importantly alert to highlight major errors. I needed the driving lessons urgently and he always managed to try and fit in a lesson within his tight schedule. If you are living in the southern part of Liverpool, I would highly recommend Matt.
