Fantastic experience: Toby at streets ahead taught my daughter to drive and she passed her test quickly. He is also currently teaching my son to drive and he is due to sit his test very soon. Toby is reliable, efficient and friendly. Both my daughter and son felt at ease with Toby as he remains cool, calm and collected at all times while still having a sense of humour. Fantastic experience: I successfully undertook training to become a driving instructor with Toby Armishaw of Streets Ahead Driver Training, in 9 months. After exploring driving instructor training courses with several of the national driving schools, I realised they were keen to tie you into a franchise with them. Toby’s name came up as a registered instructor able to train for the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) qualification and he operated very near to where I live in Westhill. I spoke with Toby and he explained the process and his approach to instructor training. Toby highlighted that the training was more difficult that I might envisage, and I should expect it to take several months. I liked this straightforward approach. The total cost for training as an ADI with Toby was more expensive that the national companies, but the ready availability of a local trainer on a one to one basis gave the promise of better ‘value’, and with an improved chance of success for me Toby supplied me with several current and up to date reference books as well as online software links and CD-ROM’s to help me. I passed the Part 1 test 1st time. I then went out with Toby for 10 hours one to one instruction in his car. His coaching and teaching skills are well honed and suited my style of learning. I passed my part 2 Driving Test 1st time. The hardest part was the training for my part 3, Instructor’s test. Toby provided a full one to one personal instruction consisting of him playing the part of the driving pupil, while also being my instructor. Keen to pass on his knowledge, Toby sometimes ‘over instructed’ me by telling me what I should be doing and saying. Toby gave me more room to practice my instruction. Toby was always pushing hard to get through as much as possible. Half way through my 40 hours, I was able to get my own instructors car and pupils. Toby discouraged taking a Trainee Licence, which allows trainee instructors to charge for lessons, whilst training. His premiss was that I was likely to become more focussed on running a little business rather than properly focusing on my instructors’ skills. Toby sat in the back for some of my lessons. Toby never interjected, unless I asked for his input. Toby fed back the learning points he noted during the lesson, after the lesson had finished and out with the hearing of the pupils. Impressively, Toby was able to identify driving faults made by the pupil and my learning points from the back of the car. Toby generally provided a bullet point written feedback note after the lesson, which I found very helpful, as I couldn’t always recall what was said during the verbal feedback. When doing my Part 3 test, Toby gave me a very good briefing and accompanied me to the test centre in. Unfortunately, my 1st attempt did not go well, and I was unsuccessful. Toby listened to the feedback from the examiner and provided a full and supportive debrief after the test. He met me for about an hour and we went over how I could do thing differently next time. I was able to get another test 1 week later, and took a different pupil for my next test. I told Toby that I wanted to take a different approach and go to test without him. Toby respected my wishes and let me get on with it. I was successful on my 2nd attempt and qualified as an ADI. Since then Toby has also provided me with support and guidance in building my own business – Skene Driving School - Westhill. I found Toby’s training to be direct and informative. He was honest in his feedback, but never looked to ‘put me down’. As far as I was concerned, I was undertaking a training course to do something I hadn’t done before. I was paying Toby to find fault in what I was doing and help me put the faults right, and that is what he did. He did also acknowledge when I got things right – it’s not all bad. Becoming a driving instructor is not easy. It takes hard work and dedication. If you want to be a driving instructor, I personally recommend Toby Armishaw as your trainer.

Fantastic experience: I first got in touch with Toby months ago, more confident in my driving ability than I maybe should have been, and expected him to prepare me for a test in a couple of weeks’ time. He gave me a polite but necessary wakeup call and took on the challenge anyway. He was flexible in the time he could afford me; he was communicative when there were any changes to the plan, and he got me to where I needed to be. Then coronavirus hit; my test was delayed, and we just had to wait for the DVSA to start back up again. He was communicative again over quarantine and let me know as soon as they were making test slots available. Despite being very busy with a backlog when things kicked back off, he again afforded me invaluable time in his car before my test. He knows how to mould his teaching style to your personality and level of driving, even as it improves. He understands how important the test can be for some and is a top guy all-round. I couldn’t recommend him enough. Thanks a bunch Toby!
