I feel that with each lesson I had always learned something new and had noticeably improved my driving ability. Joe was genuinely invested in my development as a driver, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone wanting to learn to drive in the area.

His instruction was individualized; he aimed to adapt his ways of teaching to my style of learning. Ash always advocated open communication in the lessons and he was supportive throughout. He makes it easy to schedule lessons and accommodates changes when he can. I felt really prepared for the test, and I have emerged as a safe and confident driver under his instruction.

Fantastic experience: In less than a month after enquiring I was assigned an instructor, I started lessons in May and passed my test first time in September. My instructor was Ash who was a perfect instructor, always kind, positive and calm, and never made me feel bad about anything. I put off learning to drive for years due to anxiety, but now I actually enjoy driving! Highly recommend to anyone both Ash and First Drive South West. The online video courses created by the school were really helpful, especially the test route packs since my test route was very similar to one of the videos - having watched the videos I'd already done that route in my private practice so it felt familiar which really helped keep me calm during my test. Fantastic experience: Working with will was amazing! I set myself quite a challenge by opting for a semi-intensive week of driving lessons, with a test scheduled at the end. It was a demanding schedule, and I didn’t give much notice, but First Drive Driving School was incredibly positive from the start. They accommodated my needs without hesitation, which was a huge relief. Despite the intense schedule, I passed my test on the first attempt with only 2 minor faults. My instructor, Will, was fantastic! He was not only a great teacher but also incredibly supportive. He took the time to listen and tailor the lessons to my needs, adjusting the approach whenever I felt uncertain about something, no matter how small. First Drive provided an array of excellent resources for additional study, (local roundabouts, test routes, general theory) which were invaluable. I particularly appreciated the webinars from Will, who was also my instructor. It was amazing to learn from him via video and then have that same person guide me in the car. It made the whole experience feel cohesive and effective. Overall, my experience with First Drive was outstanding. I couldn’t have done it without them! I would highly recommend them to anyone in the Exeter area, regardless of their skill level. It’s rare to find a driving school that combines comprehensive study resources with personalised, in-car instruction. Everything just clicked, and I even had a few good laughs with Will along the way!

Not only has he taught me a valuable life skill to a high level, but he has also given me important skills I can use in day to day life. I always looked forward to the lessons as we would have great fun and in many moments laugh our heads off. Fantastic experience: Joe was absolutely amazing!! I came to him after I failed a previous driving exam and he was very helpful and nice. We worked a lot on the areas I found most difficult and the many many hills in Exeter were certainly a challenge, but a good one! He is very good at arriving on time to the pick up location, keeping the car clean and in very good condition. Very very patient and extremely kind. I could see my progress within the first two hours driving with him. He is a very good teacher and will explain things others might miss. If ever I was confused he was happy to re-explain things and I never felt condescended to for having to ask things twice. He also gives little tips and advice that make driving easier and I felt a lot more confident going into my second driving exam. I also felt very safe driving with him. Having had other instructors before him I would definitely recommend him as he goes that extra distance for his pupils and is a lot of fun to talk to! Hanna

Fantastic experience: It's been a great experience with First Drive from day one. Katie took me under her wing for the majority of my learning until she went for maternity leave and Joe stepped in to help put everything together and get me test ready. Both instructors have been brilliant at putting me at ease and we've had some great laughs along the way. I've grown very fond of both of them and am hugely grateful for everything I've learned while in the car with them. Will also hosts regular Zoom sessions covering various topics with opportunities to ask questions with no extra cost. I would have no hesitation in recommending First Drive to anyone looking to get on the roads, great bunch of people.

Fantastic experience: I had by far my most enjoyable experience of learning to drive with First Drive South West. Compared to other schools I’ve used, there was far more emphasis on enjoying the lessons, rather than waking up and dreading the thought of one. Most importantly, I cannot thank my instructor Joe enough for his role in helping me pass my test. He never rushed me, but always filled me with confidence that I could pass my test. He was always understanding and I will never forget our chats that we had in the car together! But that’s only for Joe and I to know about!

Fantastic experience: EXCELLENT driving school. If I could give a seven star review here, I would!!! I came to Will having had a bad experience with another instructor from a different driving school. That experience left my confidence shot to pieces. Will helped build my confidence back up, and taught me the skills necessary to drive safely and confidently, and got me through my test. I'm 40 years old, and didn't know if I'd ever pass, but Will supported me every step of the way, and helped get me through. I can't thank him enough! First Drive South West also have some great videos on their App. I watched a few of these the day before my test, which really helped. No matter how old you are, if you feel confident about driving or not, or if you've had a previous bad experience with lessons, Will is able to get you through so you pass your test. I can't recommend this driving school enough!

Fantastic experience: I can wholeheartedly recommend First Drive South West for several reasons. As someone with quite a bit of anxiety battling with nerves, I put off getting a licence for a long time. Katie helped me through the whole journey, her vast knowledge, experience, and wonderful teaching techniques helped me pass first time. She managed to boost my confidence and gave invaluable advice throughout. Also, the driving school has a great app to track progress and access extra resources, they can book or rearrange the test for you to save the hassle, and they can arrange a lesson with another instructor if you need to get used to having someone else in the car to prepare you for test day (great opportunity to get even more good advice, thanks Will!) A wonderful experience altogether!

Fantastic experience: As an older learner, I was quite anxious when I first re-started my lessons following a long break. I learned with Katie, and her calm and friendly manner put me at ease straight away. She helped me to build my confidence and to feel much more comfortable approaching some of the more difficult roads around Exeter. It also really helped to learn with someone who was able to offer some flexibility with my lessons so that I could fit them in around shift work. I was Quite nervous but my instructor Katie was really good at getting the best out of me and helping me pass my test. They also arranged another instructor Will to do a mock test with me to get use to having a different person in the car like the real thing. And the app they provide is really good and useful.

I had a great experience with both instructors and they were extremely flexible to my schedule as a medical student. There was a very personable approach to the teaching; when I was struggling with somehting a real effort was made to understand why and a specific approach to resolve this was made. The Total Drive app they use is very heppful fro tracking progress and the office staff are also sper helpful, especially when they helped me get a test booked in last minute. Couldn't reccomend more!

Fantastic experience: I really enjoyed my driving experience at First Drive Southwest with my instructor Will! The lessons were always tailored to convenient times and even though I was so nervous to start learning how to drive, my instructor was so supportive and patient with me throughout, even being in the back at the day of my test, which really helped to calm me down. Loved the lessons and being able to pick out routes and manouvers that I wanted to work on; I felt very prepared for my test and the online resources which I got given free access to also helped me to improve skills at home and revise ready for my tests, both theoretical and practical. Could not have passed without the support from Will and First Drive Southwest!

Fantastic experience: My experience with first drive has been excellent from the start. They were apt with their communication over email from the start. Will has been amazing helping me clear my test in the first attempt especially me being someone who has never driven in the UK. Although they charge comparatively more for the lessons, it’s totally worth it. I had my lessons booked after I had reserved my driving test dates and Will was very accommodating in making himself available during my test hours. The videos were very clear for theoretical knowledge although 1-2 roundabouts were missing in the videos which were covered during the classes. All in all if you’ve reserved your test dates in Exeter, I’d definitely recommend them.

Fantastic experience: I highly recommend Will Stewart and First Drive South West for providing excellent driving lessons that not only prepare you to pass the driving test but also equip you with the skills necessary to drive independently after passing the test. The lessons are systematic and customised based on the learner's skills and progress. I am impressed with the instructor's promptness in recording progress after each session and the efforts to review it before the next lesson. The use of animations to illustrate the road system and concepts is helpful, especially for someone like me who was not familiar with the UK road system. The use of dashcam videos also enabled me to review and learn from past driving experiences. The training car is modern and well-maintained. The scheduling is done through a user-friendly app that displays past and future lessons, payments, and useful resources all in one place. Finally, on a personal note, Will's patience, friendly demeanour, and encouragement made learning to drive a positive experience. I am grateful to Will for organizing extra lessons close to my test date despite his busy schedule and for his dedication to ensuring I did my best on the day of the test.

Negative experience: I unfortunately have nothing positive to say about the driving school itself. Having spent about 3+ months, 25+ expensive hours of driving lessons with one of their trainee instructors, I haven't received any form of support or an intent to establish any customer service. Why bother, when there's always a new customer and so much demand.

Fantastic experience: Standards check workshop - in a matter of a few hours, my thoughts and processes around teaching learner drivers has been adapted to make the lesson plan more natural and beneficial for both myself and my learners. Relaxed sessions both in the classroom and in the car made it the experience fun yet informative. Before I started having lessons with First Drive I previously had done a few months of lesson elsewhere and I had a test booked but being an over thinker and an anxious person I didn’t feel ready and cancelled the test. I chose to take up lessons with Will at First Drive and I gained my confidence to drive within the first lesson. I wasn’t stressed and I didn’t panic at all. I really started to enjoy driving and after a few weeks of having lessons he got me a test and I passed first time! Will is a top-notch teacher -- despite having driven in the US for 20+ years, he helped fine-tune some of my old habits that may have slipped a little bit over the years and made the transition to UK driving easy for me. He was patient and always gave constructive feedback on my mistakes, and practicing with him made me feel comfortable and well-prepared for the test. Fantastic experience: I'm an ADI with 10 plus years' experience, and felt I needed to freshen up my approach to SC's, as it had been a number of years since the last one. Although I don't have a date/letter yet for this, I know it's coming & wanted to adapt my current coaching early, to feel more confident at having time to put changes in place, to feel more natural. I approached Will as he has such a good reputation amongst colleagues; initially, I felt a bit daunted at doing this, but Will invited me to sit in first, on 2 of his lessons, with totally different levels of drivers (learner & a full license training to develop to Advanced), and it was such a breath of fresh air, sitting & observing how he dealt & swapped effortlessly between the 2 levels, pitching it right for both. The experience highlighted for me, the areas I needed to work on very clearly; more questions, only using instructions where absolutely needed, allowing the trainee space to take responsibility for as much as they felt they could, agree this, & work towards their goal. I also learnt i was taking too large a subject and needed to pare this back. Then Will invited me to attend his SC course on May 15th where we all benefitted from a 1/2 day classroom brief, and after lunch a 1/2 day in -car sessions where we all took a turn to pick a subject, coach/instruct and respectfully feedback our thoughts at the end, with Will & Karl role playing the trainee. It was a safe environment in which all levels of us learnt from each other. I would honestly recommend Will to anyone who needs a confidence boost, to feel you can get back on track, & to take away some new ideas. I am so, so glad I asked for his help, & will continue to book some more sessions later on, to keep improving & developing.

Fantastic experience: Can’t recommend Will and First Drive Southwest enough. He was very patient and explained things to me in a way that was logical and easy to understand. It gave me confidence to believe I could pass my test and also to continue driving now that I’ve passed. Also I would highly recommend the video courses on the website. It was really helpful to see roads you have to drive on for the test broken down and the correct procedure explained. Being able to go over these in your own time and rewatching parts that you find difficult is well worth it, especially for the price.

Fantastic experience: Couldn't have wished for a better driving instructor. Will was excellent throughout, personable, knowledgable and a highly effective communicator. Finding an expert in their field who is capable of building rapport and delivering excellent training is rare, combine that with knowing you'll be spending 30hrs in 1-to-1 company then you really can't look past First Drive and Will.

I had a great experience with Will as my instructor, he was very accommodating with how many lessons I wanted and when, and even provided additional support to ensure that I passed my test at short notice. His driving style is all about progress and safety and in the South West this style couldn’t be more appropriate. I would 100% recommend Will and believe that he is the best driving instructor in the UK.

Fantastic experience: A great instructor, very patient and assuring. I hadn’t driven for a number of years and wanted some refresher lessons. Will was the perfect choice. From lesson one I was put at ease, and felt I progressed every lesson. Some old bad habits corrected, good new techniques introduced. Definitely recommended wether your new to driving or wish to brush up on those skills.

Fantastic experience: I never thought I’d be able to pass but it’s really down to my instructor, Will, that I finally have my license. He has been so patient and supportive these past few months. If I didn’t understand something, he remained positive and never seemed to mind having to explain things over. Even if I made mistakes, he was still reassuring.
