City Way School Of Motoring: Reviews

Fantastic experience: I had a really good experience with driving automatic after struggling with manual. I felt well instructed, and there were never any issues with cancelling or punctuality. I could feel my progress as the weeks went on even though driving didn’t come very naturally to me, but every mistake was then worked on until i hit test standard. There was a professional but relaxed approach to the lessons and I always felt comfortable which helped my driving attitude. I would definitely recommend Gary in the future to family and friends looking for automatic lessons. I passed my test 1st time round with only 3 minors and now i can focus on getting a car in the near future.

Fantastic experience: Gary has been an amazing instructor throughout my entire learning process. He helped explain things in a way that lead me to not only understand, but remember. He’s been incredibly patient and encouraging throughout even with my constant worrying and silly mistakes. There are many reviews on here that are quite negative but he’s been nothing but helpful. His in depth questioning of my driving made sure I corrected myself thoroughly; and it must of worked as I passed with no minors! Thank you Gary! :)

Positive experience: Had no prior experience with driving, and was quite anxious about learning, after lessons with Gary, I passed with just one minor. All lessons are recorded to help address problem areas, the car itself is quite pleasant to drive, and practical tests are booked through Gary himself, which made life a bit easier. He was happy to provide extra lessons to focus on weak points (like driving for 2 hours around a roundabout!) as well as prior to the test itself, and tailored the lessons to best suite me, like allowing me a warm up period, as I couldn't get any driving practice in in between lessons.

"Daniel, thank you for your kind comments. You should be proud of your achievements as everything fell into place for you during your test, and you had an incredible drive. I'm pleased to hear that you've been practicing solo driving. Looking forward to our motorway session in a few weeks. Best wishes, Gary."

Ben, Thanks for the kind words :) hopefully you can now get your car very soon :)

It was my pleasure assisting you to obtain your full driving licence - well done, stay safe and enjoy the freedom that passing your test will give you. Gary

Negative experience: I had this driving instructor many years ago. It was absolutely terrible. I found him unprofessional and extremely distressing. He only ever used negative enforcement and made you feel worthless. He would often arrive late and cut lessons short. He should not be in this line of work. It amazes me how he is still in business. I stopped having lessons with him and got a new driving instructor who had a total different approach. He made me feel relaxed, unlike Gary. I have been driving for some years now. I remember getting my first car and getting all excited to learn to drive. He took that exciting experience away from me. Just beware of going with this man, i’m glad to see i’m not the only one this has happened to.

Fahren,

I have carefully reviewed my records, spanning over 15 years, in search of any record of you taking driving lessons with me. Unfortunately, my search has not yielded any evidence, and I have been unable to find any emails, text messages, or online account details associated with your name.

Given the absence of any documented history of you receiving driving lessons from me, I am uncertain about the validity of your profile. Should you believe my records are incorrect, I kindly request that you contact me directly to discuss this matter further. As a professional, I take pride in providing a quality service to all my clients.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Negative experience: This driving instructor is rude and aggressive! Doesn't talk to his students just has an attitude and moans at you instead of explaining what's gone wrong! Arrives late to lessons and is generally inprofessional! Wouldn't recommend him at all especially if your anxious to start with you'll be worse withing the first few lessons! I told him I was driving home half way through my second lesson and asked for a refund as this man isn't fit to be a driving instructor and needs some skills in communication and customer service! and as you can see from the instructors response he is a blame shifter and does'nt take responsibilty for his actions.. just so your all aware i found who new instructor straight away who was calm and spoke instead of SHOUTED and passed 1st time! avoid this man and his so called good driving lessons

Hi Sarah,

Our 1st lesson is to build an understanding of your current driving standard to establish any weaknesses to work on and to give you an idea of how to proceed with the driving lessons within the timescale of your driving test that you had booked ahead of your driving lessons. I assessed your driving and pointed out areas you could improve and how to improve these areas. The changes that we had agreed on made some good improvements throughout this lesson, and this was relayed to you with discussion notes taken with me, encouraging you to take photos of your notes for use with some self-reflection after your driving lesson before your next lesson. I thought we had built a good rapport during this 1st lesson.

However, things changed in our second lesson. From the moment you got in my car, it was as if you had gotten out of your bed from the wrong side, and I was treading on eggshells throughout the lesson. It was hard to develop your driving skills during this lesson as you seemed to daydream and have an attitude. You asked for the lesson to be shortened as you needed help to concentrate during this lesson. I decided that I would not be continuing with your driving lessons after this lesson. When we arrived at your house, I wished you well for any future driving lessons that you will have; best wishes for your scheduled driving test on December 22 and made arrangements to process a refund.

Anyone who has had driving lessons with me will be aware that it is usual that when an area of your driving needs to be looked at that, we will park up and discuss the difference between what you're currently doing to what you need to do to pass your driving test, but more importantly learn the skills to be a safe driver. We produce notes that will assist you with practising the amended approach and take photos of any notes to assist your self-evaluation after your lesson. Your suggestion that I don't communicate with my clients is just not true.

My customer service may not always be perfect, but I always bend over backwards to do the best I can for my clients; due to the traffic we can get in Medway, I may arrive a little late on occasions (i had sent you a text message to confirm my amended eta), the time is always made up at the end of the lesson. I'm very reliable and rarely cancel any driving lessons. I book and manage driving tests for my clients, trying to find alternative dates and don't charge for my time, and if anyone has recently tried to book a driving test, this is a challenging process with very few tests available and around a 6-month wait for a test. This isn't a 5 min process. Im is always available to talk in between lessons.

Negative experience: After talking to a colleague at work, we discovered we both had Gary as a driving instructor many years ago. It’s now that I realise I should have posted a review 7 years ago when I was learning to drive about how awful of an instructor he is and borderline bully. He made me cry numerous times, at one point yanking the steering wheel towards himself because he said I was too close to an oncoming car, although I was no where near. The amount of times I would come home crying because of the way he spoke to me or his actions were ridiculous. He would shout and make you feel so stupid when in a situation like that, a calm situation telling you what you had done “wrong” would be a lot more helpful. He never told you a positive and was always met with negatives or unnecessary comments. One of his replies to a review says “near perfect drive” why do you need to highlight this and can’t just say was a good drive or well done? I remember my mum having to contact him after me cancelling a bulk set of lessons for some money back which he refused every though we gave him plenty of notice about this. He would cut lessons short and then sit outside my house chatting. The only nice thing I can remember about the experience is Gary helping me with my theory one day. I was so excited to learn how to drive that I bought a car when I was 16 and he completely took this exciting time away from me. I would feel anxious before lessons, often wanting to call in sick for them. But would be absolutely fine learning to drive with my dad in my own car, often driving to Brighton and other further destinations with ease and safely. I often think about my time with Gary and how traumatised I am from my experience with him. I’ve now been driving for 7 years thanks to changing driving instructor. I look at the reviews and see I’m not the only one this happened to.

Amy,

I'm sorry to hear that you were not happy with your driving lessons, we always try our best to offer the best service possible.

I'm going to respond to some of the areas you raised concerns about.

Regarding the suggested overreaction. latest statistics suggest that someone is killed or seriously injured every 16 minutes on Uk roads. (Figure reflects a 10-year average from 2012 to 2021 – info taken from the brake.org.uk website) One of the main reasons for these horrendous figures is driver error. As I don't know the speeds involved, an example for your information, a car travelling at 30mph is travelling around 13.5m per second (nearly 3.5 car lengths) you would also need to factor in the other car's speed and the distance that car would travel per second. You stated that I yanked the steering wheel towards myself, but in your opinion, there was no reason why this was necessary. Driving instructors must balance when to intervene verbally or physically to take control of a developing situation, or when to allow the client to deal with the situation themselves, with any assistance as required. Sometimes there is not enough time, due to what we have mentioned earlier, therefore the fact I dealt with the situation as you described, suggests that in my opinion as an experienced driver, there was imminent danger, I, therefore, didn't want the two of us, plus the other driver, to be one of the listed statistics above. I may have been wrong, but you need to consider you were a novice learner driver, is it not possible that your decision was incorrect, and you may have read the developing situation in a way that may have led to a serious accident?

You mention that I come across as a bit negative and only reinforce negatives, the issue here is I was trying to get you to self-evaluate your driving and understand that the safety critical errors that you made, in a different situation could have led to a different conclusion, after all the Uk has around 126,247 road accidents a year (almost 346 per day) often due to poor driver choices. No one wakes up in the morning and says I’m going to crash today, but some do. Therefore, any decisions that you make as a driver, always have consequences. I was not looking for perfection, as that is clearly totally unrealistic, but for you to learn from any mistakes that you made, to make you a better, safer driver who takes responsibility for their actions.

Refunds – We, like most companies have terms and conditions, that includes a refund policy, if you didn't receive a refund, it would have been that you were not entitled to one, I don’t recall having a conversation with your mum about this and I can't give you a reason as it was over 7 years ago.

At the end of a driving lesson, it is normal practice to review the driving lesson and agree on any areas that would need to be developed further and highlight areas that you were doing well with and agree what is going to be done during the next lesson, including any new areas that were going to be introduced. This is not finishing a driving lesson early; this is an important part of the driving lesson.

I'm pleased to hear that you were happy that we helped with your theory training.

Fantastic experience: I would definitely recommend City Way School of Motoring to anyone learning to drive whether that’s complete beginners like myself or those looking to perfect their skills ready for their test. I had an amazing instructor, Gary, who was incredibly professional and supportive throughout my training. As a learner, of course, I made many mistakes but my errors were fully explained to me so I was able to make the necessary corrections and passed my test first time!

I found that the demonstrations provided by the instructor were very useful as they showed me not only how to do something, but why I was doing it. The instructor is very friendly and understanding if you have a problem with any aspect of driving. I would definitely recommend this instructor to others.

Negative experience: My mistake in selecting City Way School of Driving (Gary), Rochester: What a terrible mistake i did by selecting my driving instructor without proper research (later I saw many reviews of City Way, which were very negative, aligned with my experience). I found City Way instructor (Gary) extremely distressing and very opposite of what a good instructor should be. He only uses negative enforcement all the time and with a degree of intensity that anybody driving with him can feel stressful and annoying. His interest is not in making you relaxed while driving. He scares life out of you by telling your mistakes so forcefully and keep on doing this to the extent that you start feeling nervous and commit some error. Then he dwells on that error by severely questioning it and asking why again and again (‘why’ questioning is quite irrelevant in this context as instructor is expected to improve driving skills). I requested him to accumulate feedback and positively provide it after every 5-10 minutes but not when am driving. I think he is not interested in changing his style which could be extremely damaging to some of his students. He over reacts to errors to say that you will never pass the driving test (extreme level of demotivation and not suitable for an instructor to say that) and that you will do a public accident, which he kept saying that it happens all the time. These scary tactics are clearly counter-productive. All this happened in the first two lessons with me and so in the third lesson, i decided to part-away from him and lost quite a lot of money in the process. I sense that his strategy is to demonstrate how bad you are in first few lessons so that he can extend number of lessons with you. In case, you get extremely annoyed and stop the lessons with him, then also this strategy works as then he can charge you a high rate with low refund given. Its win:win for him but I think we should not let him run amok for running his business in this unethical manner. A warning for other ‘would be students’ of Gary…

In Reply to your review you left.

Ravinder Kumar Agarwal.

When carrying out driving lessons, we have to make a risk assessment of any situation, taking into account the individuals experience, allowing them to learn by their errors, but ultimately, we have to balance keeping them, the vehicle and the general public as safe as possible. In case you not aware, even though you’re driving under a provisional driving licence, your still legally responsible for your actions, and the individual supervising you has equal legal responsibilities.

As stated by yourself, although you only had 3 driving lessons with myself, you had passed your driving test in India, and have a vast amount of driving experience.

Sometimes, the overriding issue with someone’s driving is not the physical process of the driving itself it’s their attitude to driving and the potential self-belief that any problems faced with driving will not happen to them, it will happen to someone else. You have stated on many occasions.

“I’m a safe driver and will I NEVER have an accident “

Statistically, that is not the case, as your driving is only as good as the next time you get in the car, and we need to remember that accidents do happen on a daily basis, the main cause is driver error.

Some info for you - During 2016 there were 31.7 million cars driving on the UK Roads, 181,384 people were injured in car accidents with 1792 people Killed – even 1 is too many. My Job and that of my colleagues (ADI) is to help facilitate a reduction in these figures by educating the learner driver in safe driving practice. (Gov Stats)

During our 3 driving Lessons, you regularly tried to navigate T Junctions either by –

- Not looking in either direction, so therefore unaware if it’s safe to enter the new road.
- Not seeing the approaching vehicle/s and trying to enter the new road when unsafe.
- You felt that you had enough time to enter the road, although by doing so would have caused the approaching vehicle/s to either, change speed, direction, or even stop.

On two occasions, when driving on main roads, you stopped my car, very quickly to let an approaching vehicle turn right and on the 2nd situation, to allow an approaching vehicle from your left to enter the road. Stating that is what safe drivers should do! When stopping, you made no checks to establish if it was safe to do so, even suggesting that if you were hit from the rear, it’s their fault.

Therefore, if you had continued to drive in this manner, an accident was likely to happen, unless I continued to take action either verbally or physically to stop the car / keep the car moving relevant to the situation that was presented to us.

During my limited time with yourself, we were trying to develop an understanding of the reasons behind you taking these risks, and continuing to repeat the same potentially serious decisions, taking into account that you are an experienced driver. We asked questions to try to bring out the reasons. But you often reverted Back to –

“I’m a Safe driver, and I will NEVER have an accident “

When assisting you with your training, in the short term we are looking for you to pass your driving test, but more importantly, were looking to help develop a driver that is Safe, confident and can make independent decisions over ever-changing road situations for themselves over the next 40 plus years. We do therefore on occasions make reference to the driving test.

Ravinder, we tried to assist with your driving development within the limited time we had available, but it’s very hard to make progress when you feel that there are no issues in the 1st place and class the above as an over reaction to something that will never happen to you.

I wish you all the best with your future driving and trust that you will have many years of safe and enjoyable driving by thinking about what we have been saying.

Best wishes

Negative experience: This man was an unprofessional and rude bully. I had one lesson with him and cried after 30 minutes, I asked to be taken home. Bare in mind I had not been in a car in 3 months and he was very impatient and aggressive. He kept shouting at me for minor mistakes which are of course going to happen if you’re a learner. My last instructor wasn’t able to provide lessons at the time i needed so I booked with Gary who was able to accommodate this. My previous instructor and my instructor after Gary also had completely different approaches and made me feel very relaxed and not nervous at all. Gary has stated in another review that it is normal for students to get upset, no it is not! It is normal for students to worry about the driving aspect but not feel afraid and bullied by the instructor to the point that they cry! I was in tears the whole journey home which didn’t look good for his business at all but what does he expect. I spoke to a woman when booking with him who said he was ‘very patient’. Complete utter lies. To make matters worse I was pregnant at the time, which is highly dangerous to be put under those stress levels by an individual who I was paying to have lessons with! My husband as you can imagine was very unimpressed that I came home so upset, and not wanting to get back into a car. Gary also refused to refund me. I would not recommend him to anyone and he should not be in this line of work unless he learns to control his temper. I dread to think what his family have to put up with if he is like this towards people he barely knows and who are paying for a service.

Hi Katie, I'm Sorry that you feel that your driving lesson, that took place was not what you would expect from myself. I'm unable to comment further as I don't know who you are, when your driving lesson took place, your review, therefore, is effectively anonymous, which makes it difficult to comment.

You mention that I did not offer you a refund. All businesses should operate with terms and conditions, I always direct my clients to them before any driving lessons take place, and continue to direct them with future contact that I have with them. My terms and conditions are readily available via my website, and there is also a clear link on my Home Page. The link below is for your info -

If you feel that you're entitled to a refund, Please email me via [email protected] and provide me with your full name, your address and the date of your driving lesson and I will look into this for you.

Fantastic experience: Being an older learner driver, I was quite nervous learning to drive and struggled with anxiety. Gary was absolutely incredible, he went out of his way to educate himself on how to approach lessons with someone who suffers with anxiety and adjusted each lesson to accommodate my needs. Not only is Gary a very good driving instructor who aims to make you a safe and responsible driver, he is also a very kind, caring and genuine person. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Hi Michael, I have had a look at my records my end and I can't find any records that you took driving lessons with myself. I'm therefore assuming this is a fake review. Negative experience: Didn't have a great experience with Gary either, I paid in advance and when my daughter came home twice upset and decided to cancel I struggled to get advance payment back and Gary started to throw website terms and conditions back. I also recall Gary arrived late a few times. I'm sure Gary works well for certain types of people but be careful when booking in advance, in my opinion there are better instructors available in local area. This is honest and constructive feedback and why these reviews are so important. No doubt, We lost time and money with Gary, he did repay my money back for lessons not used in the end but never did he once give anything back when lessons finished early or arrived late.

City Way School Of Motoring
City Way School Of Motoring

Thanks for the review.

However, I can only comment generally as I do not know who you are!

Terms and Conditions - All business’s should operate with terms and conditions, I always direct my clients to them before any driving lessons take place, and continue to direct them with all future contact that I have with them. My terms and conditions are readily available via my website, and there is also a clear link on my Home Page. The link below is for your info -

www.drivingschoolmedway.co.uk/driving-school-terms-and-conditions

One of the primary conditions is that I require 48 hrs notice to cancel a driving lesson. Otherwise, they would be charged in full for the missed lesson. The driving lessons that have taken place are charged at our standard rate and any money left over is returned.

Regarding never being offered a refund for driving lessons that finished early or when I arrived late.

I can’t comment on your individual circumstances; however, if a driving lesson finishes early (a few minutes) this would be absorbed by any driving lessons that overrun. The only situation I can think of where a driving lesson would end earlier than this is if the client asks to finish early, for whatever reason. In this case, no refund would be offered as the client has cancelled the remaining time. (your effectively paying for my time - used or not used). If for some reason I arrive late, maybe due to the previous lesson overrunning or traffic delays (lots of roadworks in Medway). Then depending on how late the lesson starts (usually a max of around 15 mins) the additional time would be added to the end of the driving lesson or the lesson time would be reduced, in agreement with my client.

If you were looking for a refund on driving lessons that finished a few minutes early, would you be expecting me to charge you an additional fee for any driving lessons that overrun?

As stated in my Terms and conditions, the last 5 minutes of a driving lesson will be spent debriefing my client on their individual progress and recording their performance as directed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. This could be the area that you feel I’m arriving back early but its part of the driving lesson.

Regarding your daughter being upset. On occasions, clients can get upset, for various reasons. Learning to drive can for some be a little stressful, and some are not natural drivers and take longer to pick things up and expect too much of themselves. Over time clients will pick things up with my guidance. I offer for Parents to come out on driving lessons wherever possible, especially if they are planning on having private driving lessons in-between ours. I will always try and do whatever is needed to help progress develop.

I hope that I have answered the points that you raised, however, please feel free to email me on - [email protected] if you would like to clarify anything else.

Best Wishes

Even on my test day, I had a couple of hours before hand and was messing everything up and had a mini melt down. Negative experience: Having undertook some lessons with Gary. I can honestly say I'd never in a million years recommend him to anyone. What a vile man to try and learn to drive with, particularly if you're a tad nervous. If you look at his website his reviews aren't actually written by the people who took their tests or lessons with Gary. See when you write them in the same context as you write your own drivel it's pretty easy to see such things. I like how you always like to point out people's wrong doings, take one girl, she passed first time BUT they got 3 minors. I wasn't aware these minors where such a big deal in ways that you have to tell every single person who visits your site. What a naracaistic thing to do. You're nothing but an egotistical bully. It's a wonder why I see your car sitting on your drive every time I drive past. I reiterate the point where I would never in a million years let anyone I know be subject to passive agreesive bullying tactics that you use to try and impale, your way or the high way, way of learning. You're a truly despicable human being, and your pass rate compared to the entire country that you like to empathise on doesn't actually reflect on who you are as a person.

Hi Charlotte - (Jenniferjeal2010)

Thank you for your review -

It only seems fair that I should reply -

You are correct, the reviews on my website have been typed by myself, however it should be noted that the contents of these reviews are taken from written responses from Surveys that were carried out. I can assure you that these reviews from my clients are 100% genuine. I’m more than happy to show them to you.

Individuals are happy and rightfully proud to achieve an A or B grade on different types of exams, even when a C or D would have been a pass. When individuals, set their individual goals higher and pass their exams with flying colours, it should be celebrated, and often is.

Regarding the mention of any errors that were made on the driving test within the reviews on my website - I take a different view than yourself. Some of these clients found driving difficult, some never thought they would ever pass a driving test and with two individuals working together, culminates in them passing their driving tests - What a fantastic achievement. I’m therefore proud of their individual performances and don’t see any harm in showing their successes for what they are, safe confident drivers with the ability to think for themselves.

Currently to Pass a Driving Test, you must make no more than 15 minor errors, no serious or dangerous errors. The individual you mention, only had 3 minor errors and passed 1st time. This result needs to be celebrated, as it’s a great achievement, which is why I believe a need to celebrate their and my achievements in helping them gain their independence and be safe, competent drivers.

I hope all goes well for your Driving Test on Friday :)

If you would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email me to - [email protected]

Regards

Gary Smith
