Fantastic experience: I absolutely recommend Steve as an instructor and genuinely wouldn't have wanted to learn with anyone else, he was super patient and had really useful tips and techniques. I passed first time with Steve but the most important thing he taught me was driving confidence which really helped when sitting the test. Steve is also just a really nice and friendly guy as well and made learning to drive a lot of fun. Thankyou Steve !!

Fantastic experience: I'm so glad I found Steve for these lessons. I managed to pass FIRST TIME and went from being a nervous and anxious driver to being much more confident, comfortable and capable behind the wheel of the car. I'm a nervous and anxious person at times and the thought of ever being able to drive never really felt like a possibility. Steve was the perfect fit for me as a person as he really understood where to push me harder with my driving skill and when to allow we a little time to destress and work on something more simple. I've been going through a chaotic but wonderful time in my life and these lessons were challenging (in a good way) but became something I used to destress and enjoy myself. Driving lessons became a highlight of my week and I'm really going to miss the lessons and the learning process. I'm even going to miss the MG3 which was an absolute pleasure to drive! Fantastic experience: Steve is a brilliant instructor! He was my 3rd instructor and prior to him I was a very nervous driver and I was stuck at the same level. Only after a few lessons with Steve I was seeing huge improvements with my driving and confidence! He's good at adapting the lessons in order for them to suit you. Fantastic experience: If you need to learn to drive in Brighton and Hove, there is no instructor worth considering other than Steve. I was Steve's student for seven months and just passed my test. He doesn't just teach you how to pass the test, but sets you up with outstanding driving skills for life and sends you out into the world feeling confident and competent. His out-of-this-world patience, breadth of knowledge and kindness (not to mention sense of humour) are what sets him apart. I cannot recommend him enough, a million stars wouldn't do him justice. Fantastic experience: Steve has been beyond incredible, not only in teaching me at my own pace but allowing me to fully trust myself and build my confidence whilst behind the wheel. It still feels like 5 stars are not enough and he deserves more! He is incredibly patient, trusting and allowed me to take my time with learning how to drive without feeling rushed or put under too much pressure. I was with Steve for just under 2 years, and had a couple breaks through out due to a couple of health issues and work travel. He is beyond accommodating, allows you to create your own driving lesson structure and create an environment that is friendly, engaging and easy to follow. I was obviously thrilled to find out that I passed on my first test, however I was saddened by not having Steve as an instructor anymore and seeing him every Friday. I would recommend Steve to anyone and everyone who is looking to drive. He adores his job and you can really tell. After months of looking for driving instructors post-covid, Steve was the only one who bothered to respond to me with updates on when I could start and I'm so glad he did. Fantastic experience: I was almost ready to hang up my L plates after 4 different instructors, covid lockdowns, 4 expired theory tests, three failed driving tests and a bundle of second hand anxieties from Instructors not giving me the skills or confidence to drive properly. I contacted Steve explaining my situation and started lessons in January 2023. This was the best decision I could have possibly made and I finally passed my test in October 2023!! Steve is patient, calm and has a treasure chest of useful techniques to help you become a calm and confident driver. I 100% recommend him for anyone who is nervous or anxious about driving.

Fantastic experience: I could not begin to explain how much I would recommend Steve. I Passed my test today, first time! All because of his amazing teaching. Steve is incredible. He moulds his lessons using many different techniques to make sure you really understand what you are doing (including using a famous toy tractor). He does not over complicate things and simplifies things down, hence the name black and white! He is very calm and composed, even when you make errors where he has to step in, he never gets annoyed or angry. He knows exactly when to push you but also when to take a break and do something less challenging. I could not sing his praises enough and am so glad he was my driving instructor. Steve never made me feel nervous or stupid. No question is silly. It really feels like he gets to know you, and you him. He has a wide range of knowledge and is clearly a very experienced driving instructor. He does not only teach you to pass your test but also how to actually drive (and how to successfully parallel park into narrow spaces). He also makes sure that you actually enjoy driving and enjoy your lessons, they never felt like a chore. He kept me calm and confident on the day of my driving test and was extremely reassuring leading up to the test centre. I will miss our weekly driving lessons and would recommend him to absolutely everyone. I could not imagine a better instructor. If you’re looking for a driving instructor, look no further. Fantastic experience: I had 12 hrs of driving lessons with Steve and passed first time ! He was an excellent instructor. He is very calm, highly experienced and explains everything about driving, and the road rules very well. Fantastic experience: I passed my driving test first time thanks to Steve's excellent teaching. Fantastic experience: If you want to not only pass your driving test, but feel confident on the road, Steve is the driving teacher you want. I came to Steve after 30 hours of extremely poor teaching, which left me anxious and scared of driving. After just two hours with him, everything changed; He reframed driving as something safe, and enjoyable. I passed my test after just 7 lessons with Steve. He’s a calming presence in the car, patient, empowering, professional, and explains everything clearly (I’ll miss the toy tractor). Fantastic experience: If you’re reading this, you’re no doubt looking for a driving instructor in the Brighton and Hove area. You can stop looking, just call Steve. There might be someone better (how would I know?) but I find that hard to believe. I’ve been a teacher myself, and Steve is one of those who knows how to teach because he loves to teach. He has a great knack of breaking driving down so that things that might seem daunting or alien quickly seem manageable and easy to understand. He teaches nothing more than you need, until you have the bandwidth for more; no question is too silly, no mistake is a big deal. He was always – always – calm and patient, even in the moments when I got stressed and tetchy, and this fed my confidence and helped me progress much more quickly than I thought possible. He’s extremely diligent: he’s always on time, never phases out, misses nothing, and he turns up ready to make sure you get the best out of every hour you pay him for. He also has a bagful of little hacks that make things like parking manoeuvres click into place. Since he taught both me and my wife, I know he has the ability to empathise with different personalities and tailor his approach to different ways of thinking and doing. Perhaps just as importantly, he’s great company. Consider that you’ll be spending a lot of time with your driving instructor, so you’ll need someone who puts you at ease quickly, and who you’ll get on with once you’re able to focus on driving and talking at the same time. Steve is funny, positive, has lived an interesting life and can find common ground with anyone. I looked forward to my lessons for that as much as anything else. Learning to drive is expensive. To make the most out of your money you need someone with experience and with the ability to communicate in a way that makes it easiest for you – and we’re all very different – to feel like you’re getting it. Steve is that guy, with the bonus that you’ll have fun and might even learn something about how to approach other bits of life along the way. I passed last week. I cannot recommend Steve highly enough.

Fantastic experience: Steve is the best driving instructor I could have asked for. After 3 failed driving tests where I previously used to live I was so glad to have met Steve. Steve has the best hacks. This guy has the best parallel park. Not just to pass but to park in the smallest gaps you will come across once you pass. He is funny, kind, knowledgeable and caring. He knows when to push you and when to do take a step back. I passed my test first time with Steve, but I didn’t just pass, I can actually drive. Fantastic experience: Thank you Steve for all your help with overcoming my fear of driving on motorways. I learned to drive 30 years ago but after a near miss on the motorway I stopped driving on motorways 17 years ago. I had developed a real phobia and I honestly thought I would never be able to drive on motorways again. Steve helped me. He made me feel safe and taught me new driving skills. With these skills, my confidence increased and my fear decreased. Steve also helped me face my fears and enabled me to plan for ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ He showed me that by giving myself distance between me and the car in front, I would have precious time to react to any potential issue. Fantastic experience: I would highly recommend Black and White Driving School as Steve is a very professional and communcative instructor and I always felt very safe with him next to me. Even though I was a fairly anxious driver, Steve excelled at keeping me calm whilst still pushing me out of my comfort zone just enough to gradually build up my confidence. Fantastic experience: I phoned Steve back in October 2020 to put my daughter on waiting list as she wasn’t going to be 17 years until February. Steve was very happy to do this and then lockdown happened and my daughter couldn’t get going till May 2021. Steve phoned me several times on updates on when he would have a slot which suited us and once date and time was arranged she had a weekly 2 hour lesson. Her first hour free and when my daughter was happy with Steve we paid for blocks of 10 lessons. We both highly recommended Steve as a driving instructor professional at all times was calm with my daughter and she has now passed first time. We were recommended to Steve by a friend for their son and he passed first time the next day plus I have recommended Steve to several of my friends too. Fantastic experience: Thanks to Steve's brilliant instruction I just passed my driving test first time, with ZERO minors! An achievement I'm quite blown away by! I had put off learning to drive until my thirties, the idea of it made me nervous, but a friend (who had suffered terrible anxiety with previous instructors) recommended Steve for his ability to make it a stress-free, calm, safe, relaxed yet methodical and even enjoyable experience. Fantastic experience: After putting off re-learning to drive for over a decade and feeling a lot more nervous for it, I can't imagine having had another instructor. Steve kept me calm and always made me feel safe in the car which was definitely an achievement! Despite covid and lockdowns getting in the way of multiple tests, Steve managed to keep my drive (no pun intended...) up through the 2 year process of getting my licence, which at times felt like it would never happen. To top it off he's a very lovely chap who made me laugh and built my confidence bit by bit with all his advice and guidance. 'Not in a hurry' and 'don't wait for trouble' will echo in my head forever...! Honestly can't thank and can't recommend him enough.

Fantastic experience: Steve is an amazing driving instructor! I had passed my test years ago, however I never had the confidence to actually drive for "real" on my own. Years after passing my test I called Steve. Now I drive happily and regularly with my daughter in the car. Steve had the patience to spend multiple lessons parking with me in the smallest spaces we could find until I was confident at parking in tiny gaps in central Brighton. He spent hours building my confidence with gear changes, the nuances is in my own personal car and many other worries I had. Amazing instructor and a great all round chap, highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: This week I passed my driving test at my first attempt after a year spent learning with Steve. When I was looking around for an instructor in the summer of 2019 I contacted several, but Steve was the only one to get back to me, and I’m very glad that he did. Steve is friendly and supportive and draws on his insights as a former tennis coach to teach in a way that is well structured and intuitive. He’s exacting, which suited me fine because I am too - but in a way that’s tailored to your learning style. He can see when you need to be pushed and when you need to take a break, and give your brain a rest. If you’re beating yourself up for making mistakes, he’ll let you know that you’re being too hard on yourself. He’s a great teacher. COVID-19 paused learning for me, but Steve restarted lessons as soon as it was safe to do so, and ensuring all precautions were taken. The lessons picked up where I left off, and I arrived at my test day feeling well prepared and relaxed. Overall, I really enjoyed the process of learning to drive with Steve - I looked forward to it each week and the feeling of making progress. During our first conversation, I told Steve that I’d been considering an intensive course, as I was impatient to drive. He advised against it, saying that it was “all about the journey” - he was absolutely right.

Fantastic experience: After putting off driving for an impressive 17 years, I decided to finally commit. I was recommended Steve by a friend and can honestly say that Steve is a brilliant teacher, who will give you confidence in your ability and is super patient ... even if you find yourself holding up traffic (and I did this more than once!). Fantastic experience: I PASSED FIRST TIME! Steve has been an absolutely amazing instructor, he's incredibly patient and kind. I started out an as extremely nervous driver never thinking that I could get past clutch control, but Steve is very intuitive and knew exactly how to help me push through. Fantastic experience: Following my wife's recommendation I contacted Steve with the objective of getting guidance to pass my UK practical driving test. My experience with Steve could not have been any better, not only was I successfully prepared to pass such test, but even more important through Steve's lessons I have become a better and safer driver. I have over 30 years driving experience in several countries, but Steve's technical teachings and techniques ensured the short term success of passing the test on the first try and more importantly equipped me with tools to be a better driver. Fantastic experience: I've just got home from the test centre, where I passed first time, without even one minor fault. This was down in large part to Steve's excellent instruction. I was already a fairly competent driver, having had a licence when I lived in the US about 15 years ago and having driven on a provisional in the UK for a couple of years. But I definitely needed some lessons in order to pass the test and generally to get rid of old bad habits. Steve quickly recognised what I needed to work on and clearly explained these things to me. He's a patient, knowledgeable instructor and a very fine teacher in general. He's also friendly and affable (although appropriately stern during the mock test!) Fantastic experience: I first heard about Steve through some family friends whilst I was looking for a driving instructor in Brighton back in 2016. They couldn’t recommend him enough and as I had heard mixed reviews about other driving schools, Steve sounded like a sensible person to start my lessons with. Steve has always been very calm, patient and supportive of me. I temporarily moved out of the UK half way through my driving lesson journey, and when I came back I knew I would go straight back to Steve to start my lessons again. I found I lacked a lot of confidence when I started driving again but Steve couldn’t of handled the situation better and always tried to make me feel comfortable and safe throughout my lessons. Steve was always thinking of new ways we could overcome areas of the lessons that I found challenging, which shows that he really invests in his pupils and genuinely wants you to become a confident and knowledgeable driver. I passed first time with Steve and whenever anybody asks me about driving instructors I will always recommend him!

Fantastic experience: Steve has been so patient with my anxiety and dyslexia - struggling with knowing my left and right has been a real challenge and Steve adapted lessons and techniques to accommodate this. Naturally, you spend a lot of time with the person who teaches you to drive, and Steve is great company too. Honestly can't recommend him enough - he's super knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about putting good drivers on the road and this really shines through in lessons.

Fantastic experience: Steve is an excellent instructor, calm, patient, with great communication skills. He is very knowledgeable about the exam centre area, possible test routes and all else you need to know and do to pass your test. I used to drive in my country but failed my first test here in the UK with another instructor. Steve taught me so much about driving in the UK and/or anywhere. Fantastic experience: I really can’t recommend Steve highly enough. He provides a calm, considered environment to learn in and was instrumental in teaching me how to drive naturally, and also how to enjoy driving. Fantastic experience: I couldn't find a better driving instructor. Steve is the best you can find here in Brighton because he has a real talent in teaching. I'm from Italy so I'm used to a different kind of driving and Steve managed to make me take my driving license without an issue. Every week I was exited to have another lesson and never once I felt not safe while driving (even on the highway !!). Steve has a very good energy and he always made me feel welcomed. I'm actually sad that I don't have to take lessons with him anymore. When I will get a car I will 100% do the Pass Plus with him. I find it incredible how I felt I was part of a team, in fact the first thing I said when the examiner told me that I passed was "I'm so happy WE passed !". I will recommend him to anyone and I will always argue that he is the best teacher in the UK :)

Fantastic experience: Steve has been teaching me to drive since the beginning of March, up until yesterday that is, when I passed my test!!! As I'm a little older than a 17 year old first timer, I wanted someone I could build up a rapor with. Steve fits the bill perfectly! He is incredibly patient and easy to get on with. Fantastic experience: Steve is an absolutely excellent driving instructor. I had a 100% positive experience and would highly recommend him to anyone, including to older learners like myself. He teaches not only the technical but also the psychological side of driving. For me, this was extremely valuable, and indeed crucial to passing my test. My main challenges were overcoming fears of making mistakes, building confidence and managing nerves. Steve really helped me to shut down what he called the “board meetings” in my head and helped me focus on finding and maintaining a calm and confident head space, where my nerves wouldn’t get in the way of my driving skills. In all this, Steve is incredibly patient and kind, but also no-nonsense and straightforward. He ensures you’re making clear progress, pushing and challenging you gently but steadily.

Fantastic experience: I owe my licence to Steve. I have been taking lessons with Steve for about nine months. He is extremely patient, and a very good instructor. He challenges you to do your best at all times and is in no way condescending at all, but rather takes his time to explain things and guide you through it with patience and care. Fantastic experience: I originally called Black and White driving school, because of the reviews. ( which I liked very much) Just moved from the USA, I needed UK license. What a great choice I made... Steve from day one, was very accommodating and understanding. Steve adjusted his teaching style to my own personal needs and personality.He is very much intuned to his pupils individual needs and wants. I’m not going to lie, that it came naturally to me, I had to loose bad driving habits from the States and adjust to UK rules.( like driving manual and on the opposite side of road) Not once Steve made me feel inadequate, or less then. if anything he tried real hard to understand and teach me the right way. It took few times for me to pass. But when I finally passed, I think Steve was more excited than me :) On the drive back home from the test ( which I passed), I recall thinking ... how am I going to do this without Steve in the car ( my security blanket) But than I remembered his voice telling me... Fantastic experience: I’d highly recommend Steve to any learner. He’s a brilliant teacher, and fantastic company. I was nervous about learning, having left it until well into my 30s. Steve’s approach is to break every part of driving into clear, manageable steps. He’s endlessly patient and positive as you practice, mess up, practice again… until, sooner or later, it just clicks. You’ll feel safe and in control. And you’ll have plenty of laughs along the way. Steve recognises that for some people learning to drive – and passing the test – is as much about psychology as it is about technique. He definitely helped me find the right mental attitude – relaxed, confident and focussed. When it came to the test, having sat a number of Steve’s exacting mock-tests, I felt ready for anything the examiner might throw at me. I honestly didn’t expect, when I started driving, to pass first time – but I did. Steve is not just a great instructor, but a gifted teacher. He’s teaching you to drive, but many of his lessons – about staying calm, listening to how you feel, instantly forgiving yourself – are great life lessons too. I can’t imagine there’s a better instructor out there.

Fantastic experience: I just passed my driving test yesterday with only one minor after learning with Steve. I switched over to Steve not long ago and I'm so glad that I did. Fantastic experience: I couldn’t have had a better instructor. His lessons were always enjoyable partly due to his countless, infamous expressions. My favourites were “empty roundabout syndrome” for the times when I waited too long at roundabouts and “don’t wait for trouble” for the times when I was too slow to exit a junction. He is patient and genuinely cares for each student. I was very happy to pass first time with 2 minors and I would highly recommend him.

Fantastic experience: I began lessons with Steve as an older, nervous driver with some unhealthy learned responses to stress, with fear about driving that had only grown over the years. Steve was very patient and persistent and worked with me at changing my habits and thoughts about getting behind the wheel of a car. I passed my test recently a couple of days before my son's 18th birthday but felt like a new grown-up myself. I thoroughly recommend Steve as an instructor as he is passionate about teaching, learning processes but also having good drivers on the roads.

Fantastic experience: I passed my driving test first time, with 5 minors, after just 4 months learning with Steve. This a guy who really understands how to teach. Every lesson is pitched to be slightly more difficult than the last so that they feel challenging, but also rewarding as you never feel out of your depth. Steve knows the importance of perfect practice and precision. He instills in you the best possible driving techniques and with his excellent guidance he ensures you keep them up, until they become second nature. I have left his tutelage confident that I am a good and safe driver. All that aside Steve is just a really genuinely nice and patient person. He is always happy to go back over any of the topics you've covered and answer any questions you might have. I can't thank Steve enough for his help and could not recommend him more highly.

Fantastic experience: Steve is a fantastic instructor who I highly recommend. With his calm and positive attitude I learnt not only to pass my test, but to drive competently and confidently. The lessons taught me quickly and efficiently. Each lesson was well structured and tailored to my needs. Upon passing my test (only 3 minors) I was left with the confidence to complete a 340 mile round trip to Somerset and back.

Fantastic experience: I started learning with Steve last October after an 8 year gap since my last test attempt. I initially had very little confidence in myself and my ability however Steve completely turned this around.
