Fantastic experience: Absolutely brilliant. I passed my full A license a few weeks ago with them. I had never sat on a motorcycle until my CBT on a Sunday, and passed my full license Monday of the following week. All the instructors were formidable, each ride they filled me with confidence, teaching by showing and explaining, encouragements and cheering support. The organisation of the school itself is top notch, sending text messages offering to change/pile training sessions or tests based on availability, which I Very much appreciated and which led to my getting a full license within 8 days. I couldn't possibly recommend the school and each instructors more full heartedly

Fantastic experience: Thanks to all the staff at Lightning for all their help, guidance and patience in getting me a complete novice with zero confidence to a full license. Carl Brooks is an absolute legend for helping me through mod 1 and 2. and helping me get over my nerves. David for the CBT, Keith , Jerry, Adrian and Simon for all your help and input along the way. Lightning 10/10 with great friendly, supportive staff .

Fantastic experience: I’ve been with these guys all the way from thinking about getting on a bike to having passed my Mod 2 test and they’ve always been the best. As a woman going into a super male-dominated world, and having heard a lot of negative stories about other schools around the country, I was apprehensive about how it would go but these guys were all just the kindest, coolest, most patient men the whole way through. Even when I failed my third attempt at the Mod 1 test, Ricky had a hug and kind words for me. The admin staff were top notch as well, always able to find lessons or tests that fit my schedule or needs. I would recommend Lightning to anyone in the south/west midlands looking to do any bike training!

Fantastic experience: From start to finish, Lightning have been more than accommodating. Moreso than what I expected! I signed up for the Experienced Course with CBT & Theory. I was given clear and precise instructions at every step of my journey - paperwork, location, essentials, etc. I’d like to recognise 3 members that got me through my journey at the Oxford branch. Without a doubt… Absolutely fantastic people, amazing instructors, and patient personalities. John Collinson. Jerry Sanderson. Carl Brooks. Thanks to these gentlemen, I now hold my full A license. I would recommend Lightning Motorcycle Training to anyone looking for their motorcycle license. Affordable and brilliant!

Fantastic experience: I had the pleasure of training with Lightning this week with the goal of completing my A Class license. I contacted the office, and the staff took the time to understand my background and what I was hoping to achieve. Based on my experience, they recommended a fairly intensive training schedule, which worked perfectly for me. The team took care of everything, from booking my theory and practical tests to providing a detailed timetable. In less than a week, I went from having no license to passing my tests. All of the trainers were excellent—patient, informative, and supportive throughout. I really appreciated the blend of hands-on training and conversation, which helped me feel fully prepared for each test. I learned everything I needed to know for the MOD 1 test in just one day, and despite having no prior experience on a larger bike, I couldn’t believe we were able to do it. The Oxford facility was impressive—massive and set up with the full MOD 1 course layout, giving us the perfect environment for training. I can't thank them enough. I highly recommend Lightning—without a doubt, in my opinion, they’re the best in the region. Trust me, I’ve spoken to several other schools!

Fantastic experience: I completed my CBT with Rob as the instructor at the Abingdon site in early September. Rob was a great instructor, very patient and calm and made all of the 4 students feel comfortable. I had completed a CBT 10 years ago on a scooter, and hadn’t rode more than 5 times after completing it, so coming to complete the CBT on a geared bike I was essentially a novice. I felt pretty nervous to begin with but thanks to Rob’s clear instructions I felt comfortable pretty quickly. I passed the CBT and have now gone on to ride my own 125 motorbike which I’m enjoying. I have also just passed my theory test so I will be booking my DAS with Lightning for early 2025, and I hope I manage to get Rob as an instructor for that course too!

Negative experience: Dropped off my 16 year old son today at the oxford training place... Half an hour early... He wouldn't let me come in because...well he's 16.. Drove the 10 minutes home and around 8 he asked if I'd signed terms and conditions... I'd let him book because its his money and its good for kids to do their own stuff... If riders are under 18 the parent has to sign terms and conditions...on paper.. Theres no online option.. Please please everyone read all the terms and conditions...there are about 50 Anyway even 10 minutes away there wasnt time for me to go back and sign and he had to leave..... He can rebook at a discounted price But its throwing time and money away... Please read the small print... Or even better Lightning make the small print big... Especially for 16 year olds... Yes sorry..replying to your reply.. No half hour was given.. The paper was given to my son and was told they were starting now.. I had rang him and said I'd drive over.. 10 minute drive... Bit pointless argueing with a company that cant tell the truth.. There are other cbt companies out there.. I suggest people use them...

We're sorry that your son was not able to take his CBT today. We send out reminders to read the joining information before a course starts just to avoid such an outcome. Including the heading of the email. We were also prepared to wait for over 30 minutes for someone to come and sign his terms and conditions. We said we would have accepted signed emailed terms and conditions, but none were forthcoming. As anyone will know it is not legal for either a 16 or 17 year old to sign terms and conditions on their iwn behalf at that age. Hence making it clear that what was required was to read our emails before the start of the course and come prepared. Our terms and conditions are there for the benefit of our customers, staff, and business. It would be irresponsible to waive them, and possibly invalidate our insurance. So, while we are sorry he couldn't take the CBT we feel that we took all the reasonable steps we could take to avoid such an outcome.

Fantastic experience: After riding round for 6 years and renewing my CBT 3 times I finally pluck up the courage enough to book my DAS and pass my Mod 1 & Mod 2 tests first time at the beginning of August! It was a pleasure to be trained by all the instructors in Oxford over the years from my multiple CBT's and my DAS this year. Special thanks to Richard who took me out for my road rider session and John who put me through my Mod 1 training, they made the days easy and very enjoyable and I really couldn't recommend them two instructors enough! Treated myself to a lovely looking Ninja 650 and look forward to seeing you all on the road L plate FREE! Thanks again, RIDE SAFE!

Positive experience: Did my A license here as an upgrade from A2. Initial costs were around 540£ for the two tests ( Mod1 and Mod2) and a training session for each. I ended up spending a bit more as once passed the mod1 I realised I needed more training on the road for mod2. Extra session are 150£ per 3 hrs. They provide equipment like jackets, gloves and helmets although you better use your own one if you have. What I liked it’s that they have lots of availability, the office was always available with prompt answers. All the instructors were nice, each of them with a different approach and way of teaching. In particular Rob and Ricky were great, really glad I got to train with them they really helped me boosting confidence and knowledge. I had an old address on my old license and The only issue for me has been that once I did mod2 test the examiner asked me “do you want me to send this off for you ?” Referring to my old driving license. I said yes. When I went back to the training camp I found out that if address isn’t updated on driving license you shouldn’t give it to examiner but send it off yourself with the mod1 and 2 certificate. This was very annoying, I run back to test center but was too late and got told I had to go myself to the old address. Had to go there several time to recover new license.

Fantastic experience: I passed my licence over a year ago, but have only recently just purchased my 1st motorcycle, and this got me thinking back to my training with Lightning... I am in my late 30s and had never ridden any motorcycle before the DAS course. The trainers in particular are fantastic - calm, supportive, and knowledgeable. The training I received was 2nd to none. In particular, I personally found the slow manoeuvring stuff extremely difficult - and wound myself up about it to the point that I was genuinely thinking about quitting. Talking with the instructors about this, they were able to offer practice advice as well as offer the encouragement to stick with it. They also suggested that I was possibly getting so wound up because I wanted it so much - which was a kind of eureka moment for me! The office was also spot on, allowing me to move some dates and regularly offering training sessions that became available, which would allow the course to be completed sooner if I so wished. All the best to John, Jerry, Gordon, Pirate, Carl & Pitor if they are still there!

Fantastic experience: So I have wanted to do my motorcycle test for over 25 years. When I was 16, I done my CBT with lightning motorcycle training and from what I can remember it was a great experience. After not riding a bike for over 20 years And keep putting it off because of medical issues I decided it was time to bite the bullet and do it. So I contacted lightening motorcycle training again and booked in my CBT. When I got to the Training school, I was made to feel very welcome. My instructor was absolutely fantastic. After spending a few minutes talking. He made me feel very relaxed and ready to do the training. I explained to him. I have a problem with my left leg and would struggle with the gears. This was not a problem to him at all as he Adjusted the foot peg to suit my leg for me was a massive boost of confidence and shows that they just want to help. After doing my CBT, I thought I would need quite a few lessons to do the full bike but the team at lightning motorcycle training are so good at what they do they told me exactly how many lessons I would need to complete the course. When I got home, I booked my theory test and my direct access course. At first I only wanted to do training with the same instructor, but during my training, I went with three different instructors. Each one of these were absolutely fantastic, helpful and kind. They all train you in a slightly different way, which I think is fantastic for knowledge and Confidence. I’m not going to pick out any individual names as I think everyone involved with lightning Motorcycle training does a fantastic job from the guys Training to the people in the office. Everyone keeps you up-to-date And do whatever they can to help you. I cannot recommend them enough. Since my CBT, I have done my mod 1and mod 2 and passed both of them. All I can add to this is if you have any concerns or any worries about anything to do with motorcycle training this is the company to contact. They will go out of their way to help you achieve your goal.

Positive experience: Thank you lightning training, I have now got my full A licence. CBT was done by Simon, great guy very informative. Mod 1 training was done by Keith, lots to say for himself, you’ll never be better than him, EVER. Mod1 test was passed with Jerry didn’t get much mod 2 training in as the ride was over to Leighton buzzard so was straight there and back as was over an hour ride but was a nice ride. Mod 2 training done by Keith but I did another training session as test was being done in Oxford and that was with a guy called Andrew was by far the funniest guy great banter and jokes. Mod 2 test (first attempt) with Ricky again great instructor. Final attempt at mod 2 with I think Richard might be wrong but again great instructor. Thanks again everyone, great value for money apart from if you have to retest so don’t fail the first time . Will look at booking an advanced course at some point.

Fantastic experience: I called up about 2 weeks ago to get my A2 license after seeing loads of other good google reviews for Lightning, and they are all correct. You’ve either got the option of doing it at a local school to you, or you can ask for any school and get any availability. Because the weather is nice now, I want to be on a bigger bike so I chose ASAP anywhere. I was placed at Oxford and the team there are great. The lessons are well structured and the instructors are actually decent blokes which is a nice change from other schools. The actual training facilities leave something to be desired in the form of toilet and water, toilet is a porto potty and there’s no water AFAIK. So take loperamide and drink lots of water before if you’ve got IBS I guess? This is something they could do with stressing. My only criticism is some of the days it would be nice to stop for lunch, as you’re there from 8am till 2pm, and it would be ice to throw some food down the gullets. If you’re wondering, I passed both tests and I’m on my way to buy a BMW sports tourer!

Dear Bradley we are so pleased that you enjoyed your training overall and have now passed! There are toilets with fresh water in the Pavilion alongside the portaloo's that we have. We hope that you are now enjoying your BMW!

Fantastic experience: I recently completed my motorcycle training at Lightning Motorcycle Training School and could not be happier with the experience. From my initial CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) to passing my MOD1 and MOD2 tests, the entire process was exceptionally well-organized and supportive. The instructors' expertise and dedication played a crucial role in my successful journey to obtaining my motorcycle license. CBT Training with Rob Starting with the CBT, Rob was my instructor. His patient and clear instruction made all the difference. He broke down the fundamentals in a way that was easy to understand, ensuring that even beginners felt confident and safe on the road. His enthusiasm for motorcycling is infectious, and he genuinely cares about his students’ progress. MOD1 Training with Jerry For my MOD1 (Module 1) training, Jerry was an incredible guide. His meticulous attention to detail and encouragement helped me master the necessary skills such as slow manoeuvres, slalom, and emergency stops. He has a unique ability to calm nerves while keeping the sessions challenging and engaging. Thanks to his methodical approach, I passed my MOD1 test with flying colours. MOD2 Training with Jerry/Ricky When it came to MOD2 (Module 2), Jerry and Ricky’s guidance was instrumental. They provided in-depth road training and shared valuable tips on efficient road use, handling roundabouts, and making one-way turns. Their constructive feedback and real-world scenarios prepared me perfectly for the test. Jerry and Ricky’s extensive knowledge and supportive demeanour ensured I was fully prepared and confident during my MOD2 exam. Overall, Lightning Motorcycle Training School offers top-notch training with a team of exceptional instructors. Their commitment to safety, individualised attention, and comprehensive teaching methods are second to none. Whether you’re starting from scratch with your CBT or advancing through MOD1 and MOD2, I highly recommend Lightning Motorcycle Training for anyone looking to become a competent and confident motorcyclist. Special thanks to Rob, Jerry, and Ricky for their outstanding instruction and unwavering support throughout my training. If you’re serious about learning to ride, this is the place to go!

Fantastic experience: I initially wanted to get my CBT done in Reading as it's a bit closer to my home but couldn't get a slot so decided to go for oxford branch instead and very glad I did as I only had good experience here. On booking, I received an email with instructions where to parks, what to bring and etc. Arrived and found the site with no problems and we swiftly started the course with no messing around. My instructor Peter was very friendly and took his time explaining everything in detailed and informative manner. I'm not the fastest learner but I was given enough time and opportunities to practice safe riding and be able to go through all elements. Peter was very patient and I appreciate his time and effort and I will definitely be returning to the Oxford branch in future to progress my bike license.

Fantastic experience: I am incredibly grateful to Todd at Lightning Motorcycle Training for his exceptional down training program that enabled me to become a certified motorcycle instructor. From the very first session, Todd's passion for motorcycling and teaching was evident. He has a remarkable ability to break down complex concepts into easily understandable steps, making the learning process both enjoyable and effective. Todd's patience and encouragement were crucial in building my confidence. He took the time to address all my questions and concerns, ensuring that I fully understood each aspect of the training. His hands-on approach and personalized feedback helped me to refine my skills and develop a strong foundation in both riding and instructing. What sets Todd apart is his dedication to his students' success. He went above and beyond to ensure that I was well-prepared for every challenge. His professionalism, combined with a genuine care for his students, creates an optimal learning environment. Thanks to Todd, I now feel fully equipped to pass on my knowledge and passion for motorcycling to others. If you're aspiring to become a motorcycle instructor or simply looking to improve your riding skills, I wholeheartedly recommend Todd at Lightning Motorcycle Training. Fantastic experience: Amazing. Had my first ever CBT done today without experience on a bike before, my instructor, Jim was very friendly and a good teacher he pointed out faults and explained clearly what to do and how to. Driving on the road was an enjoyable experience with Jim talking me and another rider through what to do and when to. I messed up in some places and he told me how I went wrong and if I noticed where I went wrong and helped me get it right. I recommend this place for anyone wanting to do a CBT test as the staff are friendly and informative before and during your test I have full confidence in booking future tests at this location. Positive experience: This is my ninth CBT to date. I should really get off my arse and do a full motorbike test but I’m Lazy this highlight some of the good and some of the bad. when booking this course you’re going to receive an email it is imperative that you read this email. I’m a guy to be honest I don’t read emails. They go to my trash and that’s where they stay but when booking this course it’s really important that you familiarise yourself with the details you will need, a bare minimum of jeans No tracksuit bottoms you will be turned away if it’s raining wear waterproofs bear in mind if it’s a hot day and you’re wearing full motorcycle gear like you’ve come prepared there is no water facilities on site water stay hydrated They do have toilet facilities you’ll have a choice of a portaloo if that is not of a friendly nature then you do have access to the pavilion which they will unlock for you. Access to this site is from Blackbird Leys Road. Overall, the course is very detailed and they expect you to be a standard where you can Sit on a bike comfortably if you have never ridden a motorbike or moped in your life it would be a good advice to do an introduction course prior to the CBT if you are not familiar with riding a motorbike or moped then it’s only gonna cost you more money because you’re gonna have to rebook for a second day If you are unsafe. The instructor really knows his stuff great guy friendly attitude. He just wants you to be your best and if you’re not riding safely, you’re gonna be going home simple as. I would therefore recommend lightning as my number one choice for bike training in Oxford just bear in mind the notes I put at the start if you arrive late you’re not gonna get on your course if you’re not wearing the right gear you’re gonna be going home if you can’t ride a bike confidently or control it or sit on it you’re gonna go home. You’re just gonna waste your money, take water with you otherwise you’re gonna be passing out in the Sun But thank you guys see you again in two years

Fantastic experience: I completed a Back to riding course in March 2024. After passing my test back in 1995 I have only ridden a bike a few times in the 30 odd years since. Rich was my instructor, he put me at ease straight away. I had a quick zip round the car park on a 125, before progressing to a 650. After the initial car park ride we went onto the local streets on the 125, after that it was back on the 650 for a 2 1/2 hour ride round Oxfordshire. All roads catered for, bendy B roads, A roads, and dual carriageways. Highly recommend. Can’t wait till my bike arrives to get out their again.

Negative experience: Went to do my CBT on scooter . Failed twice . I had ridden scooter for a year in my country but when I did a cbt , an instructor told me to come back again for twice . Obviously it costs a lot to come back again and again but nobody advised me to practice there for a couple of hours . When I did my cbt in Witney , I passed quickly . What I felt is that an instructor should be friendly. And we paid money so we can practice until like 4 pm but they said it’s over on 1 pm . That wasn’t nice . Cbt is a training not a test but during a practice time I couldn’t do U turn for 3 times and they said you should come back . I am riding a scooter for 2 months safely . It’s okay i couldn’t go to road but at least we should be allowed to practice . I don’t need to do my CBT now but please treat all equally. Thank you .

Fantastic experience: I can’t quite put into words how amazing the instructors at the Oxford branch that I had across the entire DAS course were and the people in the office had the patience of a saint dealing with my availability needs and changes. I had Peter get me through the CBT and a mixture of Carl, Jerry and John across the MOD1 and MOD2 sections. I lost count how many times I laughed. I also lost count how many times I felt disheartened or stupid only for them to utterly turn my frown upside down and make me believe in myself. I laughed so hard at one point I thought I’d fall off the bike haha. Their advice is invaluable, their humour wickedly declious and their patience incredible. They not only got me through my tests, they got me through with a grin from ear to ear. HIGHLY recommended!!!!

Negative experience: My 17 year old son saved his money and headed to Oxford from Swindon. He kept in contact after a minor train delay and advised them he will be 10mins late. When he arrived at the centre he was told he was too late and no refunds! Absolutely disgusting behaviour, especially knowing he was going to be late. You’ve absolutely destroyed his motivation.

Lightning Motorcycle Training
Lightning Motorcycle Training

Dear Rob, We are sorry that your son had difficulties with the transport he had relied upon. We held the training course up 25 minutes for him (after the arrival time) as we understood he had such issues getting to us. At which point he had still not arrived and we had to start the course for the benefit of the group. For us to have started any later would have impacted on other students on the course and would mean they would not have had enough time to complete their training on the same day which is not fair or reasonable. It is a DVSA requirement that all students are present at the start time of the course. This importance of being on time was in the confirmation letter for the training and part of the terms and conditions he had signed. We are sorry that this was outside your son’s control but it is outside ours too. Perhaps you could take this up with the train company? We have offered your son a reduced rate to come back as a gesture of goodwill.

Negative experience: I recently attended CBT training at Lightning Motorcycle Training in Oxford, not once but twice, and both times I was asked to return for yet another session. It has been an incredibly saddening and frustrating experience, and I feel compelled to share my story with the Oxford community. As a non-native English speaker, I faced significant challenges in the training environment at Lightning Motorcycle Training, which didn't feel very accommodating. My initial registration cost £179, but after failing to pass, I had to rebook at an additional cost of £135. This rebooking also included a 45-minute introductory lesson. However, this session focused only on basic practice in the car park and did not cover the crucial Element E, which involves road riding skills. This gap in training significantly contributed to my struggles and eventual failure in the course. My second attempt, this time with a moped, ended with me being deemed unfit for the road and advised to rebook the CBT. The morning of the training started with three students, myself included, under an instructor named Rob. Early on, a fellow learner, an Indian gentleman who previously struggled with English and had been turned away in Element E for not using turn signals, was dismissed just because he couldn’t answer a few of Rob's initial questions. This felt incredibly unfair, especially as it was raining. Having previously learned Element C, I managed to pass it in the morning. However, Rob left us unattended over lunch, which left me and another learner from Nigeria, hungry and studying in the room. In the afternoon, both of us made mistakes, but only my fellow learner passed and received his CBT certificate. As the day turned to night, I found myself heading home, deeply disheartened. Having spent nearly £300, I expected a greater level of support and respect from the instructor. Unfortunately, Rob appeared impatient and quick to judge, particularly harsh for those of us who are non-native speakers and might need a bit more clarification. This experience has significantly diminished my passion for learning to ride a motorcycle. Despite the offer of a discounted rate for another attempt, I am disinclined to continue my training at the lightning motorcycle training. The day was disheartening for all three of us, especially for the Indian gentleman and myself. I hope my experience informs others and perhaps guides their decision-making when choosing a motorcycle training centre in Oxford.

Dear Jayden, We are sorry that the person that you write on behalf of, Haofeng, is disappointed that he has not passed his CBT yet. The CBT consists of five elements, A,B,C,D and E. On his first lesson, he completed A and B and went on to element C (the off-road training). He still needed more practice on riding the machine in a straight line and bringing to a controlled stop; ride the machine slowly under control; carry out controlled braking using both brakes to stop in a line; emergency stops and carry out simulated left and right hand turns correctly using OSMPSL. He needed to practice these before moving on to element D and E. We then gave him a lesson free of charge, so that he could practice further (not on road training as you say), he is not able to miss out elements by law and for his safety. There is good reason for this. If he is not sufficiently in control off road, it would be (not only against the law) but extremely negligent to do so. We then booked him for another CBT (at a reduced rate) which he progressed well (after changing on to an automatic bike) and went through to element E (the road ride). A good understanding of the highway code is a prerequisite if he would like to pass. He displayed some dangerous riding techniques, and it is for this reason, we were not able to give him a CBT certificate at the end of the course. It is a DVSA requirement that these exercises are completed an appropriate standard before issuing a CBT certificate. He took unnecessary risks, such as making a turn across the front of oncoming traffic instead of waiting for a safe gap in the traffic coming towards him on the other carriageway. He rode on the wrong side of the road. These were just some of the issues, but any of these would be enough in themselves to require further training. He did not display to his instructor that he could ride independently safely. His opinion was that he was safe. Our professional option was that he was not. This has nothing to do with his English, which Rob makes no mention of, or his other instructors. This is about his ability to ride safely on the road. We are sorry that he feels disheartened but please be assured that his safety is of paramount importance to us and there is no amount of money, that will change that not withstanding his opinion of this matter. We would be failing in our duty of care to issue CBT certificates to students that are unsafe.

Fantastic experience: I took a motorcycle class with Lightning Motorcycle Training and wanted to share my experience. Their place is behind the big Tesco grocery store - read their directions email because you can't get there from the Tesco side. The facility was nice - clean bathrooms and space to park bikes. They also let us borrow their riding gear for free - jackets, gloves, shoes, etc. which was super helpful. My teacher Ricky was the best. We had someone in our group who had never ridden a motorcycle before. But Ricky made him feel so comfortable that he was able to ride a geared bike on the first day! Crazy right? Here's what made Ricky such an awesome teacher: He gave clear instructions at every point in our training He made learning fun - motorcycle lessons should be enjoyable Safety was his top concern. If he thought someone needed more practice before going on public roads, he'd recommend extra lessons - not to make money but to ensure we could ride safely. He tailored his teaching to each person and their needs Overall, Ricky created a supportive environment where I felt at ease making mistakes and asking questions. I highly recommend Lightning Motorcycle Training, especially if you can train with Ricky. The stellar instruction I received gave me the skills and confidence to ride. Thanks for a great experience!

Dear Paul, we are genuinely sorry that your girlfriend had a difficult time in getting to us and in particular the circumstances. Our joining instructions do make it very clear about the importance of being on time. All students to need to be present at the start of the CBT course. This is a DVSA requirement. This is made clear in the joining instructions and on our website. We ask you to arrive 15 minutes prior to training (the arrival time). Please see the information on our website https://www.lightningpass.com/2023/08/05/please-dont-be-late/ We also emailed you a map and texted you to tell you that it was difficult to find and you would need to use the map. We understand the circumstances were outside your control but they are also outside ours too. The instructor and all other students were there on time. We offered you a substantial discount to rebook. We are a not-for-profit business and not allowed to run at a loss. We still had over heads to pay (including the instructor wages, administration fees, site fees and rates etc, despite this situation. We are very sorry that we are not able to give you a bigger discount.

Fantastic experience: After looking at alternative courses and companies, I talked around and was recomended to Lightning. This just confirmed what I had decided already. Booking the couses was easily done over the phone and they arranged them quickly giving me the option to change any I needed to. Due to my request to do the full licence quickly they fitted me into their various local sites. A little hard to find the entrance, but I found it no problem once I signed up and was given directions. The welcome was warm, the instructers were happy to share their experience and imparted it in a good humored way. I felt comfortable from the start. There were a mix experience and ages as students, but everyone was treated with patience and respect. One to one tuition was even given to one student who needed the extra attention. I enjoyed my time there. All that is needed now is for me to complete my licence. LOL.

Fantastic experience: Loved my CBT at Lightening! Booking and communication was excellent and really smooth. I was lucky enough to have a one-to-one session on the day. My instructor was very kind, friendly, patient and informative. I had no road experience except for cycling and at the final stage of my CBT I felt confident and competent enough to go out on the road. Communication on the road was excellent and I felt safe with my instructor behind me and guiding me. We would stop every now and then for check-ins and advice on adjustments I needed to do. I am really pleased that I got my CBT and I'm excited to start my journey on a scooter (toot toot). I will be booking my CBT Plus with Lightening too to help build my confidence and ability further. Fantastic experience: I booked the Introductory Lesson and based on that was keen to take the Direct Access Scheme. The booking process was efficient and Lightning offered a CBT course in 8 days, a Mod 1 test in about 3 weeks and a Mod 2 test in about 4 weeks time. This timetable suited my learning style as I like a couple of days between each course to reflect on it. Lightning booked the tests for me meaning I could be taking the Mod 2 test 4 weeks before another school I contacted could start training. The instructors are excellent, being patient and keen to pass on their skills. A big thank you to my instructors Jerry, Karl, Piotr, Sam, Pirate and Carl who enabled me to pass the CBT, Mod 1 (13/10) and Mod 2 (21/10) first time! Easy booking, great course and test availability, excellent instructors, overall a brilliant experience. I'll be back for the post test training.

Tomas Orchard 3 years ago

Negative experience: Don’t recommend booking CBT with them. I had a puncture on the way and let them know half a hour before. Was going to be 15 minutes late and was told that I was unable to attend the course despite it being a beginners session and having already been riding for 4 years. £175 which they are refusing to refund and £125 to rebook a different date making the total £300 for a cbt. I have proof that I had a puncture at that time, it was a act of god not like I was just running late. Was going to be booking my A2 license today which is over £800 but after how I have been treated this morning will be taking my business elsewhere.

Lightning Motorcycle Training
Lightning Motorcycle Training

Dear Tomas, we are very sorry that you had a puncture. We did hold up the course as long as we could (half an hour - you were asked to be with us for 07.45am). You booked online a beginner's course (despite your experience, which allows you to book on an experienced course – perhaps because the dates were earlier). However, the other students on your course are beginners. The course is a group course and there are time restraints. You being half an hour late, is the difference on whether the other students will get the time needed to complete and get their certificate that day. So the decision to include you has to have a bearing on how it affects the rest of the course and what other paying customers have paid for and rightfully expect. In addition, we are not allowed to let you skip parts of this course. The training course consists of 5 elements A - E. You can't miss part of it and join in at a later time. This is as stipulated by the DVSA, the government body that authorise and regulate us to conduct training on their behalf. This situation is not of our making and as part of our good customer service we allow you to come back at the discounted price of £125 (instead of £175) that is not a profit for us and we do so only as a gesture of goodwill. We are out of pocket £50 for a situation that is outside our control. We are sorry that we could not help with offering you another course free of charge, but as a not-for-profit business, we are not allowed to run at a loss.

Positive experience: Great bike selection for riders of all skill levels; 50cc mopeds to 650 Suzuki SVs. Wide selection of helmet sizes to fit even the most awkward of head shapes (guilty). Instructors are (mostly) patient and encouraging and all have good senses of humour but ultimately, you get out of the courses what you put into them. Follow instructions, listen to feedback, implement advice and you'll do fine. My only gripe regarding instructors is that their advice and guidance sometimes contradicts that of other instructors so if this is the case for you don't be shy in clarifying. I did and I was able to clear things up and thus gain the confidence to pass my Mod 2 on the first try. Pro tip: Buy your own gloves! Special thanks to Jerry, Sam and Simon aka The Pirate. Cheers guys!

Adriana Teixeira 3 years ago

Negative experience: Extremely unpleasant experience. 3 chairs under a boiling sun, no decent toilets, very poor infrastructure. Helmets, jackets and gloves in a shelf without the slightest care in hygiene, and smelling. As a healthcare professional I felt at risk. The instructor made me feel discriminated (I couldn't understand his accent when saying "L plates", and he rudely said: "you have a problem with the language, lady. I have to report it" - in the first 15 minutes of his explanation). My observation: I work for an English company, I speak with the whole world in English everyday, and despite I am not a native, I do not have issues with the language. I have issues with rudeness. It is unacceptable). I cannot complain about the technical evaluation on my "figure 8" as I recognise my limitation at that particular day. However, the instructor was not helpful at all, and at the middle of the day he called me to the office and gave me his appraisal saying that he "needed to prepare the boy (there was a boy doing the training with me) to go to the street and that he "would not have time to me" - his words. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the services.

Lightning Motorcycle Training
Lightning Motorcycle Training

Dear Adriana, thank you for your review. We are sorry that you felt that you had an unpleasant experience as we do take pride in making sure that the opposite happens. You didn't pass your CBT, not because we didn't have enough time but you hadn't reached the required standard to go on the road by the time that was needed to finish the course on the same day (within the time allowed). As you say, you still needed to show that you could complete the figure of 8 exercise competently, as well as OSMPSL. Another day would have given you the time and confidence to complete your CBT. We did offer this to you at a discounted rate to take into consideration that you did not get to go out on the road that day. We do generally take a great deal of care of our helmets and gloves - so perhaps that was a snap shot of that day. The gloves are cleaned on a regular basis - however it is the height of the Summer and it is not possible to clean these everyday. As for rudeness and discrimination this is not something that we tolerate so please do write into us at [email protected] so that we can investigate this further.

Positive experience: Training is good but facilities are lacking. Spent an hour in the wind and rain waiting my turn while the buildings were all locked up. It's fine in the summer I'm sure but at this time of year it's just not great. Especially considering the equipment they provide like gloves aren't waterproof. I feel like they should be a bit more prepared, and the guidance should emphasize water proof trousers and gloves (something I didn't think about as a beginner but turned out hugely important). Cost me the CBT because by the time it came to the final ride I was soaked and my extremities were numb from the cold and just wanted it over and done with.

Fantastic experience: Had my Module 1 training session towards the end of December 2021 with Carl. Carl is an Exceptional trainer to say the least! Thank you for your enthusiasm, and for making it so easy. I also had a short training session with John on 05/01/22 just before my Module 1 test and John was Great! I passed my Module 1 and these guys had a big part to play in me passing. Had my Module 2 training session with John on 19/01/22 and test on 21/01/22. I passed it and again, the training that I got was definitely a massive help. Beyond the trainers, the team in the office are always willing to help and be as flexible as they can within reason. Fantastic experience: Oxford centre is an amazing place to learn anywhere from the CBT (They also do an introduction course if you aren't sure if a motorbike is for you as an extra day of training) to the Mod 2 (Full licence). I was so confused before talking to them about everything I needed to do to go from no experience to on the road (CBT, Theory, Mod 1, Mod 2 and the lessons in-between for road experience). A quick phone call and I got an E-mail through a few minutes later highlighting exactly what I needed to do and how much it would be. Any questions I had where I was still unclear was answered quickly and clearly which also put my mind at ease. That piece of mind was worth every penny and that's before meeting the instructors! They are an amazing group of people. I have struggled with my confidence in the past but they were able to explain exactly what I was doing wrong and how to correct it. Their training methods were easy to follow and after a few practice runs I felt like a pro. Only thing I would recommend is for you to buy your own helmet as early as possible just so it fits you correctly. Go to a motorbike accessory shop and they will be more than happy to help you out with sizing. Overall a lovely experience from start to end.

Negative experience: Wasn't worth spending a £175 for the cbt. The trainer (was so arrogant and rude and wasn't considering us as students. He was just looking at his wristwatch all the time and was rushing through the modules just so he can go home early. This is not the kind of attitude you'd expect from your trainer. He didn't even take me to the road and straight away said I failed it and need to book again. It's not a small amount and the trainer should keep that in mind. I will never come back nor will I recommended this training centre to anyone. AVOID!!!

S Kuna (Risanvideo) 3 years ago

Negative experience: Absolutely appalling training given by the trainer. I paid £175 for basic training but I didn’t get proper training at all. The trainer was going to the toilet every 15 minutes which wasted most of the time and he was just rushing over everything. He didn’t even take me to the road because apparently he was getting late (which isn’t my problem because I paid full fees). I spoke to my friend who went on road with him and she said the same thing that he was just rushing through. She was panicking because he was using rude language and blaming her for being slow learner. He was absolutely impatient and wasn’t at all interested in giving proper training. All he wanted to do was go to toilet and rush to go back home. I have full UK driving license and so I’m very familiar with the rules and regulations including the Highway Code however he said I’m not able to go on the road but one of us who doesn’t have any experience or doesn’t even know what the Highway Code is, he took that person to road which is quite dangerous. £175 is not a small amount and the trainer should have all the attention and time for the trainees which didn’t happen today. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TRAINING SITE AT ALL.

In the space of 6 weeks and 5 lessons I went from unable to ride atall to a safe competent full license holder. Couldn't be happier with the training and the outcome. Will be back for further training next year.

Fantastic experience: I have to say this is the best motorcycle training school I have ever experienced. I felt my test through some cowboy style training school just before the lockdown. I was very upset and lost all my confidence. Then I found lightning training school. I received very efficient and professional service from one of the receptionist (Alice). She arrange my module 2 test appointment faster than the DVSA and secured me a position even through the coronavirus lockdown. And then I have to say a huge thank you to Mark Stevens my instructor. I passed my Module 2 test with the help from Mark, who is a very experienced, patient, polite and professional instructor. He patiently transfer motorcycling into a simple concept for me and mental me overcome all of my bad habits and sharpen my skills. Now I am a full A license holder! I am absolutely over the moon. I decided to come back and do my enhanced rider scheme with These guys soon. Definitely strongly recommended!

Fantastic experience: I have just had the most amazing weekend thanks to you guys! From the beginning: Advised you of my ultimate goal and my complete lack of bike experience. All emails were courteous, and helpful. Thank you ‘Alice and Emily’? (I’m terrible with names! Onto day 1: CBT with Piotr. Very informative and knowledgeable instructor. He gave me the good, the bad and ugly! But encouraged me to improve in the right way for me. He gave those of us on the course time to retry many manoeuvres until we had gained some confidence in them. I did feel as though I may have been holding the other guy back, but he assured me as well! I completed my CBT day with a pass. Day 2: Roadrider day with Kyle (Alex/princess, he wasn’t fussy!). Again, a very informative helpful instructor. He instantly under stood my teaching technique requirements and adopted his style to those needs. Loved a bit of banter, caught on quickly that I’d not be offended. I have read a comment about somebody being inappropriate with the trainees. My response to that is it’s probably best to get your humour across to your instructor, or to simply grow a set and allow yourself to join in! Any training is much more fun when you can get along. Various staff I have no clue of name, but pretty much every one of them made me feel welcome, they were friendly and genuinely interested in how things were going! Right now, I look forward to my Module1 day next weekend! And thank you once again to Piotr and Kyle

Fantastic experience: Came here for my CBT in late June, absolutely amazing. My instructor Kyle Dabell took me from not knowing what the electric starter switch was to riding on the road within the space of a day. He also helped me slowly through all the manoeuvres and was patient even when I was being stupid. Not only did he do this during the CBT but after he helped me find a place where I could rent a bike to practice on since I plan on getting an A2 license. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to get into biking

Fantastic experience: 2nd time ever getting on a bike and I was put at ease right away. Kyle was incredibly patient with me, even when I kept on messing up the U Turn! It's a long day, so if anyone is a novice/never been on a bike then I recommend sipping on water throughout to remain focused. You'll have a wonderful time on your CBT with Kyle, and the rest of the instructors are all very friendly/love a bit of banter!

Fantastic experience: Renewed my CBT here. The whole process was easy, right from booking to the day itself. Our instructor on the day was Kyle, has a great approach to teaching and is very safety conscious. Highly recommended. Will use again for my full license.

Negative experience: I had no experience of riding and participated in CBT with 3 more experienced riders than me (I would definitely say to book a more introductory lesson before the CBT). The session was booked from 07:45-16:00, and there was one instructor to 4 learner riders. The place was quite difficult to find. We were given only 2-3 opportunities to try things out before moving on to different manoeuvres, and I felt a sense of being left behind if I didn’t do these correctly or if there were issues, and there was little support to help me in these circumstances. The trainer would make sarcastic comments or say that he had said something once and wouldn’t say it again, when I asked for clarification to help me to learn. At around 11:30, 2 of us were told that training could no longer continue and more training would be needed, and 2 were taken out onto the road. It would have been both helpful and possible for those of us that were not taken onto the road to have additional training (off road) for a similar time as we would have spent on the road, following the more skilled riders being taken into the road. I was told that the instructor might have a maximum of 30 minutes to help us practice towards the end of the day but he couldn’t guarantee it so I might want to go home or to stay several hours and wait to see if he had time. Because I was struggling, this was highlighted in front of the other participants openly and critically, rather than being discussed more privately or sensitively. I left feeling, on the whole, really demoralised by the experience. I would ask any females wishing to participate in motorcycle training to be careful, as the instructor we had frequently made what I consider to be indecent and sexist remarks. I requested a partial refund for my experience of receiving only 4 hours of training but this was declined. EDIT: I’m sorry that you felt this review is untrue, I believe it is a true reflection of my experience. I appreciate it must be difficult to hear negative comments about the business, but I don’t think it is helpful to try to discredit the reviewer. I am always quite worried when businesses respond to negative comments in this way, and people that research your business, as I did, will take these comments into consideration. As said above, more experienced than me. One reporting this to be their second CBT, another previously rode a moped when younger (and received an introductory lesson), and another had practiced with family. Given the above comments about this being a half-day, it’s interesting that you used the words ‘worked hard all day’. I made reference to the trainer being critical and making sarcastic comments. I was sorry to see that you continued this trend in the response to my review (‘behave like a five year old’, ‘they certainly come out top in a poll of most adult and grown up by some margin’, ‘crawling through the rest of this muck is a waste of time’, ‘on the whole the feeling is that the motorcycling community would be a whole lot happier without you’). It is rather worrying that you dismissed the above as ‘disgusting lies’ rather than taking the comments on in a serious manner. ‘Behave like a five year old’ seems to be synonymous, in the eyes of the responder, with shaking one’s head a couple of times after having difficulties with the clutch, leaving when asked to leave by the instructor, and writing a negative review of a negative experience after paying over £100. In relation to your comments about ‘umpteen people who were pleased’ on review sites, at present there 14 reviews on Trust Pilot (71% 5*, 29% 1*; 4 gave full written reviews with a 1* rating). On Google, 13 reviews (ten 5*, two 1*, one 3*). I would suggest from the data that at least some people are unhappy, and perhaps you may benefit from listening to both those that are pleased and those that are displeased, so that you can improve as a service.

We're sorry that you didn't complete your CBT in one day. However, the views expressed in this review are completely untrue. We outline carefully on our website and in our terms and conditions how the course is run and what to expect. The fact that none of this was read is unfortunate, and but that is not an excuse to write disgusting lies about an instructor who worked hard all day to teach you to ride a motorcycle safely. It's interesting that elsewhere you claim the other students were experienced, one was 16, the other was 19 - 21 and the third had previously not completed the CBT (this was their second attempt and they were under the weather). Not most people's definition of experienced, but they certainly come out top in a poll of most adult and grown up by some margin. The place is not easy to find which is why we emailed a map of our location with directions. To be honest crawling through the rest of this muck is a waste of time - but this is not a fair or true reflection of who we are or what we do. We've been trading for 20 years, and have taught in excess of 40,000 people. In other reviews on Google or Facebook you can read the accounts of umpteen people who were pleased and enjoyed the training. (Training which we provide on a not for profit basis.) People who probably took the time to understand what they getting into, what would be realistic expectations, and then didn't behave like a five year old when they weren't very good at using the clutch. Good luck with learning to ride a motorcycle, but on the whole the feeling is that the motorcycling community would be a whole lot happier without you.

Fantastic experience: Completed my CBT last week with instructor Kyle. He was super patient, considerate and made me feel completely at ease. I'd never been on a bike before and I had such an awesome day being guided by Kyle. If I could give him an extra star on this review I would, couldn't recommend lightning enough! Highly reccomend you guys, I'll be back to book my big bike test at some point and I can't wait to come back ☺️

Fantastic experience: Having completed my CBT with Lightning at their Reading base, I completed my 4 day Direct Access Course (and an extra 2 hours that I asked for) with Lightning at their Sandy Lane base. The whole experience was fantastic. Firstly the administration was extremely professional, helpful and understanding. I had Simon for my first 2 days of training, Mark for my final day and Simon "Pirate" for my extra 2 hours. All three of them made me really at ease with each stage of the training and tests, explaining new skills clearly and identifying mistakes that I was making and how to correct them. Other instructors who were not training me were friendly and asked how my training was going. I passed all thanks to them! It really was a great experience and I would strongly recommend Lightning to anyone.
