BMW Rider Training: Reviews
Fantastic experience: I recently completed my DAS training with the exceptional team at Royston BMW Rider Training, and I cannot recommend them highly enough! Over the course of six days, I successfully passed my CBT, Mod 1, and Mod 2 exams, thanks to the incredible guidance of Bob. His extensive knowledge and experience not only in motorbikes but also in understanding people truly set him apart as an instructor. What impressed me most about Bob was his personalized approach. He treated each trainee as an individual, taking the time to tailor a training plan that met my specific needs and learning style. This level of attention and care made a significant difference in my confidence and performance throughout the training. The entire team at BMW Rider Training is equally fantastic—professional, friendly, and incredibly supportive. They foster a positive learning environment that makes the process enjoyable. The quality of the equipment provided was outstanding; everything was freshly prepared and laid out ready for us upon arrival, ensuring that we could focus entirely on our training without any distractions. In summary, if you’re looking for a top-notch riding school with a dedicated team, Royston BMW Rider Training is the place to go. I left feeling well-prepared and excited to hit the road, and I am truly grateful for the knowledge and skills I gained during my time there.
Fantastic experience: Just completed my DAS training with the amazing team at Royston BMW Rider Training. Passed both Mod 1 & Mod 2 thanks to the extremely professional instruction that I received from Toby & Bob. Really impressed by their consistent, highly knowledgeable and most importantly very encouraging approach. I had previously attended a training course local to me in Sandhurst with an instructor who was extremely unprofessional and seemed to think that shouting and criticising was how to train. I am so pleased to say that my experience at Royston was “night and day” in comparison. It was so worth the trip up to Cambridge to enjoy a premium experience with such a well organised team with purpose built training rooms , great kit and top class brand new BMW F800GS bikes. Thanks guys I had a lot of fun and learnt way more about riding than just what the tests required. Top class!!!
Fantastic experience: Gold Standard CBT Course I completed CBT at the Royston training centre over the 24th and 25th August 2024 with David as our trainer. Previous to this course I had attempted CBT elsewhere (without progressing to going out on the roads) and I subsequently looked into several other providers. As such I feel well informed (at least in my local area) to make the assertion that the course I attended offers the gold standard in CBT courses. I'll support that claim by listing out the key differentiators: 1/ At 6'5" and 110kg I really struggled on my first CBT course with the 125cc bikes the centre used. It wasn't so much a problem with the engine size, but more the physical dimensions of the bike meant that I could't comfortably manage the foot controls without being in physical pain. For approximately a week after the course I was still experiencing discomfort in my hips as a result. My enquiries into other providers revealed that they all only offered similar sized bikes for CBT. With BMW Rider Training they generally use the BMW G 310 for CBT which, by observation, seems to suit many riders, but for someone of my stature they also have the BMW GS 310 which is the same basic bike but slightly raised seating. I can't say it was a perfect fit for me but it did allow me to learn without the distraction of physical pain and then go on to complete the course. 2/ Most centres seem to offer 1 day courses and with the centre I first attempted CBT there'd been no attempt to match students according to experience. Unfortunately that meant that I was paired with someone who was renewing their CBT (after a short break) so there was a very obvious difference in ability. With BMW Rider Training the course was over two days and I was matched with a student who was starting from scratch (essentially the same as myself). As such, over the two days, we really had time to get through each stage of the course at a pace that was a lot less forced than a one day course. With my learning style that was a big differentiator. 3/ BMW Rider Training offer the full range of gear that you need whereas other providers seem to only provide helmets, jackets and (perhaps) gloves. At the Royston centre they also have changing rooms within their building which is a significant "upgrade" over the far more limited facilities other providers seem to have which is typically a small portacabin and a container. 4/ Quality of training and quality/experience of the trainer. Having previously had some limited experience of CBT I had imagined that I knew a lot of the theory and only needed the extra time to put that into practice. As such I was really taken back by just how much additional knowledge that David imparted over the two days; knowledge that was invaluable to me as someone that finds understanding the how and why as key building blocks for getting to grips with a technique. Two standout examples of this, both relating to turrning, were: "positive steering" (a.k.a. "counter steering); and body position to shift weight when turning. I also noted that David, as well as being someone with a great "toolbox" of training skills and a really "user friendly" manner about him also had a very impressive resume. What I mean by that is that he's qualified at a level that means he trains trainers; he was *selected* on to an advanced training course with the police; and he takes part in "moto gymkhana" (look it up). Obviously I can't speak for any other of the BMW Rider Training centres, but if they're anything like the Royston one I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them. I can also say, without any shadow of doubt that as and when I'm ready to progress to the Mod 1 and Mod 2 stages of my development I'll be booking up with them again. Thank you David and all the other trainers at BMW Rider Training, Royston.
Fantastic experience: First class instruction, great logistics and top of the range bikes and riding round a beautiful location … what more can you ask for ? Although riding for many years I learned a tremendous amount . Really enjoyed the week and appreciated the first class tuition from Julie . Thanks !
Fantastic experience: Had a fantastic time doing the 7 day intensive course as part of the bmw rookie to rider package. All of the instructors are a wonderful bunch; full of knowledge and fun to be around. Special thanks to Toby my instructor for the week for all the advice, comradeship and confidence boosting to allow me to pass both my mod 1 and mod 2 first time. Well worth the price and highly recommend; excellent bikes, excellent instructors and significantly more training time for slightly higher cost when compared to other training providers.
Fantastic experience: Having never sat on a motorcycle before, I opted for the 7 day course. David, my instructor, was incredible. It was with his guidance and teaching that I went from complete novice to CBT and then onto a pass with no minors. Thanks so much for the experience, I would recommend to anyone and everyone in future. A comfortable and trustworthy environment that lets you develop at your own pace, the instructors will only push you when you’re comfortable and it really helps your development. Whether you’ve had a bad experience with bikes or a complete novice like myself, this place is in my opinion the best choice for motorcycle training. Thanks to David, Ian and all the other instructors for an unforgettable experience!!
Negative experience: Inexperienced rider, after talking on the email many times, they took money, she was for one day, they told her do not come for second day and offer her one to one lessons, and from February she still waiting. Not serious company.
Fantastic experience: All instructors are very professional, patient and friendly 10/10
Fantastic experience: Skilled and experienced instructors who demonstrated their ability to modify their instruction techniques to suit their student. New BMW bikes is a bonus. Special mention to Advanced Instructor Simon.
Fantastic experience: I did the 5 day intensive DAS course with Mod1&2 tests. I passed both because of the level of care and guidance BMW training provided me, especially Dave, my instructor. He was patient, attentive, kind, and always cracking jokes preparing me mentally to handle both tests. The GS they gave me is a wonderful bike. All their bikes were new, clean, well maintained, and a joy to ride. They deserve 5 stars for such a great facility and service. I would highly recommend to anyone and especially working with Dave!
Fantastic experience: 5 days of amazing riding experience finished with successful Mod 1 and Mod 2 passes. Bob was a fantastic instructor, very kind and encouraging. Other instructors, Dave and Denis, were also very friendly and encouraging. They provided us with all the gear that we required, I didn't want to use mine since it was raining most days, and that caused no issues at all. Started on F750 GS right from the day one. Bob didn't waste time with mod 1 exercises, as soon as he saw that we will succeed in it, we moved on to road riding. After riding 125cc bike for a year, I quickly noticed how my skills were improving with every day of the course. Thank you Bob, Dave, Denis and Ian. This was a week I won't forget. And I'll miss you dear F750 GS.
Fantastic experience: I'd always wanted to ride but believed I was to small, at 5'1" and only 50kg. A colleague recommended BMW Rider Training. They were absolutely brilliant, with exceptional trainers who are very highly skilled, encouraging, and patient! They're also very strict on safety and ensure that students not only learn how to ride, but develop the habits essential for riding safely. I returned to undertake some extra training about 6 months after getting my full license, to improve my skills (particularly those relating to my height!) and it was absolutely worth it. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: I am in the same circumstances as Shaun a few reviews down. 28 y/o never been on a bike before did my full license with the BMW team at Royston and I couldn’t recommend them highly enough. Denis (my instructor) was incredible, friendly and set a really comfortable learning environment, this helped me on my way to passing both my MOD1 and MOD2 first time. You are riding in gear that is provided for you on practically brand new BMW bikes. Don’t be scared off by the price for the intensive course it is well worth the money.
Fantastic experience: By the far the most superior motorcycle riding school in the country. A well oiled machine.
Fantastic experience: (Im 39 and a HGV C+E driver absolutely ZERO previous riding experience) After wanting to do my bike licence for the best part of 20years and completing 2 motorcyle theory tests in the past but doing nothing with them, I searched for a school with good reviews and pedigree I found the BMW rookie to rider course and my mind was made up. I completed the Theory test once again and booked my 7day course which includes the CBT over 2days and then 5 days instruction on riding safely, correctly, effectively and efficiently. During these 5days you take the MOD1 and then on the 5th you take the MOD2. Instructor Bob (highly experienced and taught the CBT part brilliantly) I took my CBT on a 310gs(see pic) I expected a 125 for the cbt but due to their instructors level of training qualifications and accreditation they are able teach you on a larger bike, a welcome surprise. We had a mix of classroom Theory and riding in an enclosed training area to practice clutch control and certain Mod1 skills. Day 2 was Classroom, Training area and Road riding country lanes and small village areas nothing to built up. All went well and was told I would progress onto the 750gs for the next 5 days. I was a bit nervous about moving upto a 750gs(forgot to take a pic), In steps Instructor Dave made me relaxed and assured with his friendly demeanor and professionalism. An hour on the training pad to assess and he was happy to get out onto the road, a huge mix of Countrly lanes, B roads, A roads and town centre riding in and around the Royston area, riding through Cambridge was a good experience. Through out all of this you had radio dave through the built in headsets of the helmet giving advice, instructions, and a bit of local history commentary to help take the edge off the tension. I was taught how to ride the bike not how to pass the test, this is a big part of their mantra, you're trained to ride not pass a test. We had an hour on the DVSA MOD1 pad to see where we would take the MOD1 and to practice the exercises and was able to see and attain the speeds needed for each manoeuvre. The next day we had the MOD1 passed with no faults. I took my MOD2 in Bedford, the morning was a ride over and a quick ride round Bedford, not knowing Bedford was a bonus in my opinion as I was hyper aware of road marking, signs and was careful and cautious throughout the test as I wasn't using local knowledge and expecting a road to be clear as it was yesterday. Passed with 3 minors. Instructor Dave was absolutely superb, gave so much advice went above normal levels of tuition I believe and was showing some advanced techniques as I was progressing well through the course, definitely couldn't of done it without him. *Facillities* separate male/female toilet, 2x changing rooms, Tea and Coffee and sofas to take a load off and have your lunch if you've not stopped out for a bite, classrooms with white boards for the Theory of roundabouts, junctions etc etc. You walk in and the instructors are all friendly and welcoming no ego or people not wanting to be there. I obviously spent time with Bob and Dave but also Ian was there and happy to chat involve you in the conversation. *equipment * Part of the draw to BMW rookie to rider was the use of their equipment, I didn't want to spend on gear if I didn't pass or realised Motorbikes weren't for me. I was provided with a helmet that fitted brilliantly, armoured textile Jacket, Gloves, armoured textile trousers and Motorcycle Boots. All the kit has obviously been through a few students but was clean and more than serviceable, the helmet was probably quite new. Everything was clean, you use the same kit for the length of your course. *Bikes* The bikes are superb I used a 23 plate 750gs with 3500 miles on the clock with heated grips absolutely a god send in the cold and rain we had on the course. The bikes are all BMW and I think I'm right in saying less than a year old, they get new bikes and the "used" bikes go back to the dealership to be sold. All in all a solid recommendation from me and I'd recommend to anyone.
Fantastic experience: I decided to do a days training with BMW Rider Training to get me confident riding a much bigger bike compared to what I ride now. I picked the ‘back to riding refresher’ as I had only been riding a year and felt that fit my needs the best. On arrival I was greeted by the trainers who all introduced themselves and made me feel welcome, my trainer was Denis. The facilities were really nice and including tea and coffee. We did some classroom based stuff to start off with and then went to the ‘mod 1’ style training area. We started off on the F750GS to practice slow manoeuvres. I was doing the course with someone else who hadn’t ridden for 25 years, so we had completely different skill levels and goals to achieve but that wasn’t an issue for Denis. After getting comfortable with slow manoeuvres, I then moved onto riding the R1250 for the road ride. We went on varying levels of road and up through Cambridge city centre. We were out for about 3 hours. As I was aiming to get on a R1250RT Denis used his personal time at the end of the day to ensure I got the opportunity to ride this. He helped me build my confidence up and not I feel so much more comfortable riding a bigger bike. It was 100% worth the money and I will definitely look to do extra training again with them. Thank you Denis!
Fantastic experience: Completed a CBT here two years ago and then very recently went back to complete my A2. Absolutely loved my time here. My riding had improved tenfold. Staff are all lovely and supportive. They cater to your individual needs and you can also have a laugh with them. As a short rider at 4'10, they were very good at teaching me how to ride a bike that I could not "flat foot" on. My confidence with stopping and right turns has improved majorly and I have definitely seen a huge improvement in my riding since reattending. A huge thank you to Ian, Julie and the rest of the team.
Fantastic experience: Big shout out to Julie, Dave, Dennis, and Ian for a fabulous seven days. We rode in as many different road and traffic conditions as we could to ensure we think about how to be safer when out on the road. Their patience with the students is exemplary. All instructors were eager to chat and share their diverse experience, and adapt the method of instruction to the students' needs. After passing my test, Dave continued the momentum by discussing ways to have continuous riding improvement.
Fantastic experience: Top training school in the country. I believe all the trainers are top-notch. You won't get better trainers anywhere else. Very precise In Detail . Riding safely at all times is a top priority. Big thank you. Team BMW.
Fantastic experience: Recently completed a 7 day direct access course here. I left with my full bike licence and a lot of confidence riding in all conditions, despite being really nervous at the start. The level of instruction is second to none. I haven’t just been trained to pass the test, but to ride to a decent standard as well. If you’re thinking of getting your bike license; don’t even think of going anywhere else. You really do get what you pay for! A huge thank you to Dennis, Ian and all the team at BMW Rider Training Royston.
Fantastic experience: Completed a CBT here, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The premises are modern, clean and safe. They have an “rolling road” so you get to ride the bike on a static platform first for a while before going outside to ride for real. Instructors were clear, friendly and taught well. Bikes all brand new, comfortable and easy to ride on. Left feeling confident and excited to ride on the road. Really positive and professional energy and environment.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant training quality on equally brilliant bikes! Value for money.
Fantastic experience: Recently passed my Mod 1 & 2 at BMW Rider Training Royston. A fantastic experience from the moment you arrive. The facilities and equipment are top notch, as is the quality of the instruction. A huge thank you to Dennis, Dave, Julie, Ian and Claire. If you’re looking to learn to ride a motorcycle, these guys are easily your best option, so much so that I intend to go back for some post-test training in the new year.
Fantastic experience: Highly recommend BMW Rider Training school Royston. The staff are very friendly, patient and the training is very professional. Big thank you to Brian for getting me through the CBT & Denis for getting me through my Mod 1/Mod 2 tests. Thank you for the great experience on the 7 day course learning to ride from scratch on some beautiful bikes with great people.
Fantastic experience: I did a 7 day course here to get my licence. The instructors were brilliant and would recommend. I had never been on a motorcycle prior so I could not ask for more!
Fantastic experience: Recently completed a 5 day DAS course at Royston. I largely booked BMW because of the reviews, they did not disappoint! I had Denis for four of the 5 days and cannot praise him enough, the course was perfectly tailored to each of the two experience levels and was always happy to chat through both the good and bad elements of my riding in a down to earth manner.
Fantastic experience: Bit late to give these awesome guys a review, but better late than never. In August 2021 I decided to finally pass my CBT. I have a full driving licence. I have not driven any cars since 2013, after having a minor car crash. It was nothing major, but it affected my mentality and my road confidence. Because of this, I was always sceptical with whom I should train for my CBT. In come the guys from BMW Rider Training and I want to say this: I am forever grateful for the confidence boost you guys have given me. I am not talking about fancy words used. I am talking about the kind of training you guys provide. I am more confident now than I have ever been in my life while on the road. Riding a motorbike has been life changing under your supervision! And it's given me the ambition to keep improving and wishing to be better day by day. I told you then and I am saying it now, here: THANK YOU! I will for sure be back to train for my full licence. I can't trust anyone else after having done my basic training with you guys. I hope you are all good and I will see you soon! Damian
Fantastic experience: Booked the six day direct access course in Royston . The course was very professionally ran from the moment of arrival , with all my equipment clean and functional as per the sizes I requested. The opening address of the course from Ian was again extremely professional and gave a clear aim of each days training , incentive for learning and a reason why we had to learn the skills. During the training Ian would quickly identified area’s I was lacking and used various techniques and exercises to help me not only learn skills but retain them . This was key and made the course challenging but never overwhelming. During each days riding Ian would stop us for breaks and give excellent feedback covering the complete route we had taken , giving praise for good riding and hi lighting errors , making sure we understood why and what effects good and bad riding has to us and others . At the end of each day a full review of the days training was given (always with a good coffee) . All in all this is some of the highest level of instruction I have encountered, I was not trained to just pass a couple of test . (Which I did ) Ian and Dennis where training us to be motorcyclists not just a bloke/girl with a license . Many thanks to Ian and Dennis for a fantastic week , I will be back for further training . For anyone thinking about going to another provider, DONT . BMW Royston should be first choice .
Fantastic experience: Back Riding After 30 Years...... Took the plunge to take up 2 wheels again & best decision I ever made through my instructor/trainer Denis, think he was sceptical about finishing on the GS1250 after 2 days. Beyond just riding motorbikes over 2 days, included road positioning, knowledge of reading the road clues like a detective, provided me with confidence beyond my expectations. I cannot thank him enough and the amazing BMW set up they have for mature folk as well as newbies at Royston training centre to finish the day on a GS 1250, if they had 6 stars, then this would be it!
Fantastic experience: I passed my license with BMW Rider Training. I took the DAS 7 days intensive course and a 1-2-1 training day. The experience was great. The instructors are great and amazingly experienced. The set up of the school allows student to build confidence quickly: start on smaller bikes before moving to the bigger ones, private pad and compound before getting on the roads. As part of the training, we had the chance to train on the official exam pad which is really a big plus. I'll definitely be back at the school for advanced training in a few months.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic riding school. Friendly instructors who train to a very high standard. If you want any form of motorcycle training this is the place to go. I cant wait to go back and do my direct access and some pillion training and I will be recommending it to anyone who is interested in starting to ride.
Fantastic experience: After 25 years away from riding, I booked 1-2-1 training with the Royston training centre - I was quite anxious about my return to riding. But my instructor - Denis - was absolutely amazing - he carefully helped build my confidence and skills, and by the day's end, I was on the road on the F750GS! I can't praise Denis enough, and highly recommend the centre.
Fantastic experience: Simply the best rider training anywhere. Friendly, expert instructors, classrooms and a dedicated slow riding arena make for a great experience. In my case (21st April) I was struggling with slow riding control, on my massive RT. Ian gave me instruction the like of which I have not had elsewhere and as a result, I can now do u turns, slow slaloms etc, relaxed and under control.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic expirence! Highly professional training centre. Recently booked DAS 6 course and was made to feel at ease staright away, All the instructors are friendly, knowledgable and very patient. Would reccommend to everyone who wants to learn to ride
Fantastic experience: BMW rider training is the best there is. The reasons are simple: 1. Quality of instruction. I had experience of four instructors over three courses I've taken, including direct access 7 day, and two additional courses. Dave, Dave, Nick and Ian are unique instructors with individual syles, but each adapted to my learning style. Training was unpressured and effective, making each learning point a progressive, achievable milestone. I think very analytically; the team invested effort into finding out why I was over-analysing 'problems', and got me through them. RTFB. 2. Kit. It's the best. The bikes are less than a year old, and you can ride anything from a 310 to a 1350. Training for me was done on a 750 which was a superb bike. Clothing is the safest there is. I was shocked to arrive at the test centre to see other schools pitching up in jeans. Not safe. ATGATT innit. 3. Administration. Slick. As flexible as they can be, and student-centric, from medical emergencies to recovering me when I got lost on a ride. 4. Value for money. Couple of quid more than the others. You pay for quality, and you will be a safer, better rider for it. I will be back.
Fantastic experience: Who did I turn to when I needed help riding my motorised scooter? - BMW Rider Training of course! Great place to learn to ride after a hard week on the tools!
Fantastic experience: I wanted an assessment of my riding ability as it has been almost 30 years since passing my test and having formal instruction. I took a one day 121 session with BMW Training in Royston. I found Julie very professional and knowledgable. Julie structured the day to enable a review of my learning objectives, knowledge and riding. Julie ensured she understood what type of riding and roads I currently ride and her knowledge of BMW bikes was an added bonus. I can't recommend this enough for a biker who is coming back from a break or who wants a professional assessment of their present skills.
Fantastic experience: Just passed my full A license with BMW rider training! The course was run very professionally with the instructors taking time to run through where improvements could be made in my riding and point out bad habits I had picked up! A great way to get your license or gain some training to be a safer rider! Would recommend to anyone looking to get into riding! Thanks to everyone there! 5*
Fantastic experience: Just completed a 7 day DAS. It was a brilliant week, both physically and emotionally very demanding and absolutely amazing. The instructors are very skilled and highly patient. Excellent lessons and support from start to finish. All fall into place by passing MOD1 and MOD2 two days later. I was shown to ride safely and on how to handle a motorcycle - doesn’t matter on size. I was truly impressed with everything from having the lower suspension motorcycle for shorter rider like me to accessing Vehicle and Operator Services Agency test area itself to practice in advance of MOD1. Thanks you very much Nick, Julie, Ian, Audrey and Dave.
Fantastic experience: I have now done the 3 day one on one course twice, once alone and once with my wife as pillion who was petrified when on the RT. With BMW Rider Training's help she is now confident and a happy pillion. It turned out that it was as much about my smooth riding skills as much as instilling confidence in her. I can't be greatful enough for their training and highly recommend this training centre.
Fantastic experience: Just passed my test with these guys. From start to finish they were very professional. I was fully supported throughout the course and received some of the best instruction out there. I will be going back next year for some extra training. Without any reservations I would recommend them to anyone looking to get into motorcycling or brush up on your skills. Great facilities and great people.
Fantastic experience: I have just completed the 7 day direct access course with the team at BMW rider training Royston and have just had a world class experience. The professionalism is second to none and I’ve had so much fun. If you want to learn how to ride, with people that really care about you learning properly and safely....and you enjoy having fun, these are the people for you. Don’t hesitate, book a riding training course and you’ll have an absolute blast. It was a fantastic experience.
