5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course: Reviews

Negative experience: Attended 5 days during the month of July/August. Have to say it has been the biggest waste of time and money. The theory side is not massively helpful as you only go through slides and the guy that ran my course for the week didn’t even know half of the stuff. Kept saying you will have to Google that or I’m not sure. I did fail my theory test but not saying that’s the company’s fault, but there no knowledge they are really passing on. After you have done the theory you then go out driving. The same guy that ran the course did my lessons. I found him really rude and not really helpful whilst out driving. He was always aggressive in anything he said. Saying you should know this how do you not know this by now. He spent the whole week slagging off my previous driving instructor and not teaching anything new. Since completing the course I have not even heard a single thing from the company. No offer of doing my theory again. Just feel like it’s a missive amount of money to spend to not even get the help needed. Just have a serious think before spending money with the company as they don’t seem to even care about the students. Just about taking the money and that is all

Negative experience: I am emailing regarding the complaints regarding 5 day. Firstly they wouldn't re arrange the week as I had Covid. They told me I can still come in with Covid even though I was ill in bed for the two days therefore I missed the Monday and Tuesday which I didn't think was right when so much money has been handed over. I went in on the Wednesday still a bit ill with Covid but I didn't want to waste anymore of the week. We did two hours of the theory in the morning where he was talking through some slides. I wasn't happy as the driving instructor had to google what two road signs meant. I didn't think this was professional as he is a driving instructor. After the theory you then go out in the car to practice the driving side of the course however on the Wednesday the driving instructor said to me he's taking someone on a driving test but please don't tell 5 day as he isn't meant to do this. This meant that I was stood around for 90 minutes waiting for him to finish and then my day finished later which I didn't think this was acceptable. I didn't report this to 5 Day as he told me not to and I'm not the type of person to get people into trouble. When you contact 5 Day can I just say how rude the receptionist are. It was like I shouldn't be ringing to see when my test will be but when you have paid so much money you shouldn't be met with rudeness on the phone. 5 day say they can find the test 70% quicker then everybody else however they ended up booking my test in January! To me this just isn't acceptable and asked them can they not widen the search to a different test centre? They refused and said they cannot do that. I then have had to find a different instructor and re book my test for November in Blackpool costing me more money for a different instructor.

Fantastic experience: I bought my first car today after passing my test in May. Alan Ashurst was my driving instructor and I couldn’t recommend him more. He was so calm and made me feel so at ease from lesson 1. Thank you so much Alan, I looked forward to our lessons every week and have to say I miss them a bit!

Negative experience: Misleading radio advert and customer services staff. Closest to Cardiff is Bristol and no place until 2024. Test waiting list up to 6 weeks. No automatic test cars in Bristol after saying there would be. Theory test scheduled last day of course at 4pm after extensive hard day of learning. Had to make own way to theory test Centre. Instructor unprofessional in his approach and his terminology used and behaviour towards 17 year old disrespectful. Each day was 8am to 10am theory practice, 10am to 12noon driving and 1230 to 230 pm driving. No care or confirmation taken of personal needs and nervousness. Customer services not open in weekends. Had to pay £5 for driving app when already paid £1508.00 for course. I do not recommend. Not worth the price or hassle from staff and instructor!

Negative experience: Did this course just under 2 years ago. Very expensive and not worth the money. They promised to give you a test a lot faster than the DVLA waiting list, however I waited over 7 months for my test and had to pay for extra lessons after the course had finished. Overall spent over 2 grand and still not passed. Save your money and go elsewhere

We are somewhat confused as to this review. We did not receive any form of correspondence from this pupil since finishing their course in July 2021 until February 2022. The link for the practical driving test was sent in March 2022 when the pupil had completed an assessment successfully. Whilst there was a delay for the practical driving test, due to the COVID-19 backlog, unfortunately the scheduled test supplied to this pupil in December 2022 was cancelled by the DVSA. They have since been provided with an alternative test date. We have not been advised at any stage with their dissatisfaction to the service received, therefore have not been given the opportunity to assist them. We would ask that they contact our Customer Services Team.

Negative experience: My booking reference number is MN-G1G7N surname- portelli before 5Day try to say they had no pupil under This name! Biggest rip off company!! Please don’t be fooled that this is the best way to go as it is not! Personally. I did 5 day over a year ago & it was the worst money I’ve ever spent, I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. The majority of it was working around theory and I felt sorry for a lot of the other students that had already passed their theory as they just had to sit there the whole time whilst others went through questions in the classroom they wasn’t entitled to get anymore hours and I personally think that for over £1000 20 hours of driving is disgusting then to have to pay for your own test with no help in getting it sorted. I felt like I needed more lessons and could never get a slot. I’m no closer to passing my test & it’s left me short on a lot of money as a single mother of 2 children!!!!! Over £1000 on what ?? To be left with minimal knowledge, I got more help and experience driving when driving alongside my sister in law. Me and my sister did this and we both regret it more than anything. Not to mention the driving instructor had no pride in her work, & made me feel anxious most of the time and talking about how she’d been in lots of crashes on round abouts, she avoided them all the time because of her own experience. This is so unprofessional & it was the same routes all the time never anything different which is ridiculous! How is anyone suppose to learn ? Avoid at all costs

Thank you for your review. We are somewhat confused as to why this pupil has left such a review as we have not had any form of contact since October 2021. To leave a review without attempting to contact the company is somewhat unfair. We would also recommend checking the terms and conditions received at booking as all "grievances" outlined within this review are explained clearly. Should you wish to contact our customer services team to discuss, please phone 01603 616909.

Fantastic experience: i found the intensive course fantastic! i was test ready by the end but had to wait a few weeks for a test due to covid. 5day arranged a test for me 2 weeks after i failed my first test which is as early as legally required. really kind and helpful instructors! thanks to alan specifically you are amazing!

Negative experience: Course was just ok, very expensive for approx 10hrs driving , test was months later, can understand this now with the test situation(was told it would be fast tracked though) and a fail due to the lack of driving. Did have 2 booster lessons but our instructor was lazy , fat , smelly and was 2 hrs late and promised a 2 hr booster lesson that ended up 50mns. Wish we'd just waited for a "normal" instructor that we ended up gettin in the end. Failed on not looking over shoulder aft emergency stop, NEVER done one in the lessons. Edit:- My son has the same surname , he was the one doing sudoku on his phone whilst theory lessons as he was bored.

My friend has with same company received his test date but is paying weekly ..amazingly I paid upfront and now they say to rebook more lessons lol joke of a company I am now taking this further as money was took on understanding a test would be booked

Fantastic experience: Recently completed my 5Day course with Manchester and I am extremely happy with the service provided. I had previous driving experience from 4 years ago and was able to jump straight back into it with confidence thanks to Jim, he was amazing with pushing me to be the best I could and was ready to book my test by Wednesday! I had already completed my theory but still sat through the theory with Alan which was really helpful to refresh my knowledge and everything was explained really well. I’m currently just waiting for a date for my test. Highly recommend for previous drivers who need to focus and dedicate the time to get passed.

Chantelle Mcgowan 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: Due to COVID my course was delayed, but 5day were brilliant with their communication. I had Jim as my instructor in Manchester and he was brilliant. Strict and stern which is exactly what i needed to get my pass first time. Lovely guy with great banter amd laughs, Alan who does the theory training got me a great pass with his lessons also. Brilliant course and well worth the price

Fantastic experience: Just finished my driving course, and although I am not fully ready for a practical test I have gone from not being able to drive to being confident on the road and with a few more weeks practice I will be ready for a test. Alan was a good theory teacher, and I felt confident taking my theory test and passed. My driving instructor was Lynne, she was amazing and I would defiantly recommend.

Negative experience: Absolute rip off for your money I paid over a grand to 5Day and was told I’d get free refresher lessons after lockdown but after ringing them recently I was told I’d have to pay for more lessons, teachers were useless and tried scamming me out of a day of training, would recommend anyone not to use this service as it is a massive scam and they honestly don’t care for you to pass your test so they can get more money out of you.

As you have not stated your name we cannot verify this review. We would encourage you to contact Customer Services via [email protected] so your comments can be investigated. We'd like to add we have assisted many pupils who have had lengthy delays in taking their practical driving tests and feel comments such as "scamming me" and "a massive scam" are defamatory and libellous.

Negative experience: I have never driven a car before so I am a complete beginner. The website advertisers that all levels are catered for but this was not the case. The terms and conditions say The 5DAY course is designed to give an AVERAGE pupil an overall grounding on all the topics of the dsa syllabus and to help a pupil achieve IF POSSIBLE dsa test standard by the end of the 5 Days. The website advertising says that “In the rare occurrence that you are not suitable to take the driving test, free corrective driving lessons and car will not be provided“ As a beginner I felt this point was not explained clear enough for me. The course only offers 20 driving hours yet statistically according to RAC it takes an average of 45 hours of driving lessons plus 20 hours of practice to become road worthy. So it seems I was set up to fail. What made everything worse is that my driving instructor was abusive to me from day one to the point that I had to change instructors. He was not giving me enough time to think through moves, he then led me onto the motorway without any prior notification or lessons on Junctions, even my second instructor thought this was ludicrous. By Day three I had a new instructor who was brilliant through I was made to feel incompetent for not progressing, hardly the environment for a first time driver. At the end of the week it came to my attention that they used to provide free corrective lessons but have recently cut back staff and that’s why they don’t do the lessons any more but in my opinion their advertising has not reflected this change properly and I will be reporting it to the advertising standards agency. The good thing is I passed my theory but much of this was down to an app that I bought and used for years. We had a teacher but for that premium price it should have been one on one tutoring rather than listening through other people’s questions. I paid premium price so I could get additional lessons that I need to become road worthy. Had I known I would only get 20 driving hours I would not have done the course. *I'd like to add that I had 5 lessons with another company days after leaving 5day, it was mostly rebuilding my confidence as my instructor assessed me and said I was really good and I passed my test first time around, as you can tell by the defensivness and lack of appology in 5day's response, that was the attitude. my experience was really poor with 5day and it affected my outcome. I believe had I been treated better, I would have had a better result. I have learnt my lesson, if you want to learn how to drive, get a driver instructor and take two weeks because these intense courses don't always deliver quality.

5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course
5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course

It does clearly state on the videos on our website the entire course structure and when asked on the phone when booking the sales team always will break down the theory class time and driving time so no one is misled. Your allegation re the free lessons is totally untrue. If you take a driving test and fail everyone, as long as you attended your course in full, will be offered them to fix the fault that caused them to fail. We do provide these now so cannot see where you obtain your comment regarding a change in practise.

Amber 5 years ago

Negative experience: 5 day left me £1000 in the hole and no closer to passing my test. A word of warning - STAY AWAY. At the end of the week i was no closer to passing my test. My instructor told me to go home and practice with my boyfriend until i'm ready as i was not passable by the end of the 5 day course I emailed customer services and they replied saying: ''May I apologise if you were under the impression that you would be sitting a test within 5 days, that is not what we offer or suggest. Our website and advertising (agreed by both Advertising and Trading Standards) clearly states that we teach you to drive in 5 days and book a test 75% sooner than the DVSA waiting list. Upon completion of the course our Instructor merely suggested and you agreed, that you would benefit from more practice to increase your skill level and confidence before booking a test in order to have a better chance of success.'' They take your money and overcharge for what you could essentially get with a local driving instructor for half the price - you are not pass ready at the end of the course, do not believe them.

5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course
5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course

We note that you you have received a response from our Customer Services team as you state. We do have regularly pupils that are ready at the end of the course week to apply for practical tests. It clearly states on your course invoice and on the website and terms that a practical driving test is not charged or included in the 5 days course and when completing the course if a pupil feels ready they can then apply through 5Day for a fast track driving test and in the event they fail the test we offer free correctional lessons to fix the serious fault that cased them to fail. All of these services are still available to you once you feel ready to apply for your driving test

Fantastic experience: Although im not quite ready for my driving practical test yet, i managed to pass theory with only 3 mistakes, the classroom learning was a big help, and my driving instructor was extremely helpful, ive gone from not knowing how to drive at all, to being a couple of lessons away from going for my fast track practical test. Brilliant staff, brilliant facility, 10/10 would recommend.

Positive experience: The course is good don't get me wrong it got me to pass my theory first time but a thousand pound to have 20 hours of driving and someone to chat to you for 2 hours a day is a bit much I only realised this but there are much cheaper courses available with more in the package I did all my lessons passed my theory just got them to tell my I'm not ready yet not being funny but everyone should be ready to drive when paying that sort of money

5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course
5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately everyone learns at a different pace. The course is not just driving and theory training it includes use of the vehicle for test with refresher lesson , a fastrack test booking service plus in the event you make an error on test we provide free unlimited correctional lessons to fix the serious fault that caused you to fail regardless of how many times you take a test and fail. You are also entitled if you have obtained further practise to develop the skills taught on course to return for a free assessment of your driving

Fantastic experience: Just wanted to say thanks for everything my driving instructor did for me, he was amazing and I don't think I would have been able to pass first time if it wasnt for him! Negative experience: Terrible customer service, informed me continue to apply for my license when it wouldn't have been in time without offering to change course, refused to help. Customer service so unhelpful, instructors were nice but failed to supply more lesson, its been 7 weeks not once response from any. Nothing but a money making shambles they don't care once they have your money. Waste of 1000 pounds - no remorse no passion to help.. save your money

5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course
5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course

We note that the pupil did in fact book his course but did not apply for his provisional driving licence until 2 weeks before it was due to start and although contractually not obliged to do so was offered to try and resell his course space at short notice however we were only informed on the Friday before his course was due to start that he had not as yet received his licence from the DVLA leaving us minimum time to resell. Mr McKenna is on a standby list in the event another pupil does not turn up so he can be brought in for any subsequent training.

Negative experience: Fat bearded man in a Corsa with this company advertised on it, reg SB63 DVA, undertaking and cutting people up, changing lanes without indicating and speeding up when people try to overtake. Clearly not a very bright individual, would you learn to drive off somebody who drives like that?

5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course

We would ask that you contact our customer services team or the Police if you believe dangerous driving was shown. Please note that it is not always the ADI driving their own vehicles.

Negative experience: Witnessed some very dubious driving of one of the instructors on Chester road speeding and cutting up other drivers, undertaking, bullying. Appalling really when you consider the level of training they must have. A case of do as i say not as I do..

Fantastic experience: Thank you so much 5DAY!!!!! I passed my theory and my test first time! I was a complete beginner when I came to 5 day sale, I had the most incredible instructor Jakub stencel, at the end of the first week he was honest with me and said i wasn’t quite ready but wasnt far off so I took 2 extra lessons with him before he sent me for my test. This is an intensive course and may not be for everyone I was worried as a beginner it may of not been for me but between Jakub and the theory trainer Keith, they made me feel comfortable and confident!! So thank you thank you thank you! I couldn’t recommend enough!!!!

Vacancies Today 7 years ago

Negative experience: Be Very Careful - The practical and initial driving experience is great. After the five days, however, you're essentially on your own. It has been three months plus since my five day course ended. With the instructor on holiday, then booked up etc it has not yet been my turn to get an extra lesson. I have tried calling, emailing and texting politely, to be told it's my responsibility to get a slot. The extra lessons are free, yet if it takes four months and there's still no lesson, perhaps you should look elsewhere unless you feel you are already nearly ready for a test. Otherwise, you'll essentially be paying £1,000 for a theory test. When I informed them that my last lesson was over three months back and asked if this was normal practise, the reply I received was 'Lessons after the course are a private matter, you have them when you book them, so the frequency is down to you'. As much of a nice guy he was, Andy will avoid providing the free lessons as promised. This is a fair, objective and balanced review.

5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course
5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course

To correct you, lessons arranged between you and any instructor are not free. If you take and fail a driving test the lessons are free and are given by our course manager within a week of you applying. If you have taken a test and this has not happened please contact us directly on 01603 616909 and speak to customer service and the free lessons will be booked in without fail. 5Day head office.

Fantastic experience: I would recommend 5day for anyone wanting to learn to drive. The staff are all very helpful and friendly. The fact that if you fail your test you then receive free mentoring lessons and are supported until you pass makes it well worth it!

Rea F 8 years ago

Negative experience: The course is brilliant if you haven't passed your theory test, I passed with 49/50 first time and don't think that'd of happened if I didn't do this course they explained everything to me. However, the practical side was the worst. I had an instructor who quite frankly looked like she couldn't care a less. Felt like I never got feedback off her. I sat my practical test at the end of the week and failed, still had no feedback from her, just a better luck next time. The 'free correctional lessons' which follow after failing your practical, I felt like, a bit of a scam to intise you in to the course in the first place. I started my correctional lessons only to find out you spend an hour on what you failed on. I failed on indicators and turning right. I had hour lessons on turning right! Nothing else...driving around in circles turning right! Also your made to feel like your wasting their time, the lessons are around them, isn't the same instructor just who ever is free. The instructor at the end of every lesson also asked 'do you want to resist your test now? Shall we get that booked', I wasn't confident I was going to pass with 5day. After a few more dismal hours on turning right I decided to go out and get myself an independent instructor in the city centre. He was brilliant and I passed with flying colours with him, he really spent the time with me. Overall, the concept of 5day is all well and good and I'm happy to see some people benefitted from the course, however for me I felt they wanted my £999 and that was all. I personally wouldn't recommend this course.

5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course
5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course

Thank you for your review - Thank you for your feedback - It does clearly state on the terms and conditions issued on booking that the free unlimited correctional lessons are to fix the errors that caused you to fail your practical driving test - e.g. if you failed on roundabouts then we would take you out to cover roundabouts until you felt confident to take another driving test and you dont pay for those lessons unlike other companies that charge for additional lessons if you fail. You failed on turning right and we gave you free lessons on right turns. You obviously benefitted because you go on to say you passed the next time. Well done. Now drive carefully and be especially careful when turning right !

Kate Wentworth 8 years ago

Negative experience: Honestly, when I first did the course I was amazed at how fast you learned and how great the course was. The teaching was at a great standard for the theory side, however 20 hours of driving is not enough for a complete beginner and more lessons are needed at the end of the course. This is not the problem though. The instructors sit and complain about spending an hour on a Saturday or Sunday if a test is booked then and do not like working them. Therefore, they will send you off with a completely different instructor and car even if you've never done a lesson in that car before. This can get very difficult especially if you're doing a manual test. As well as this, you are supported up until you fail your first test. If you do end up failing then you are completely abandoned by 5 day with them charging you the £62 to do another test, another £25 if you would like to fast track it and if you don't have a car to use for your test then you're completely on your own unless you want to break the bank with them attempting to charge you £183 to use an instructors car for only the hour you're doing your test. I find this place absolutely ridiculous and very very expensive to what typical driving lessons would be. I wouldn't recommend a complete beginner driver on doing this course.

5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course
5DAY Manchester Intensive Driving Course

Thank you for your review. If you fail any test you are offered free lessons. You can still take those if you want to by contacting the office. A retest cost is broken down like this: Government charge for test 62.00 Car hire 5Day car 50.00 for 1.5 hours. Fast Track service if you want us to book you the test instead of yourself on the Government website 25.00 You do not have to use a 5Day car for a retest and you do not have to use the fast track service. What I am confused about is that you record shows that you took the first test in our car free of charge on a weekday. Your second test was in a car supplied for yourself and that to was on a weekday so I do not understand about your Saturday test complaint.

Positive experience: I haven't taken lessons with them, but have spoken at length. The course is 5 days, assuming your ready to pass after 5 days, if you're not ready either you don't feel you are or they don't feel you are, any further lessons need to be paid for for on top. The unlimited lessons until you pass isn't strictly true, t's not really unlimited lessons unless they/you feel you are ready and you fail then the lessons cover only what you failed on. I've left this review based upon my direct contact.

Fantastic experience: Overall happy with 5Day Manchester! Keith taught me everything I needed to know to pass my theory, I went in for my theory test with confidence knowing I would pass with the knowledge he shared. Also my instructor Jim pushed me to my limits and has been by far the best instructor I have had! (And I've had 4 all together) any errors he's sure to polish out and an all round nice friendly man who you can have a laugh with. I'm just awaiting my fast track for my practical test now and I am feeling very confident. 5* for you 5Day!

Positive experience: As a complete beginner for me the course worked wonders. I had zero knowledge on day 1 and by day 5 I have passed my theory test and feel much more confident driving. I'm still not quite ready to take my test but at the end of the day they cant work miracles. My instructor was super patient with me and I will be booking him for further lessons until I am ready to take the practical. It is a lot of money to spend but worth it. By cramming the hours on the road over a short period of time you can build on your skills much faster. If I had only had 1 lesson a week I think it would have taken me months to get to this point as each week would have been like starting from scratch. By dedicating a full week to it I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience. Thanks to the 5 day team!

Fantastic experience: Perfect for all levels of experience. I was a completely new driver and in 5 days had passed my theory and covered all the points that would be covered in the test. Depending on how fast you learn/what level you start at you could be ready to sit your test after the 5 days. I need more practice but still have contact with 5day for when I'm ready to book the test or see the instructor for more lessons. You aren't guaranteed to go from inexperienced to test ready unless you learn fast enough: however it's perfect to give you the massive boost you may need so that you aren't dragging it out 1 hour lessons every week for months and months. Definitely try it out to get a head start!

Negative experience: Definitely not the best method of learning to drive, I would only recommend if you're at the point of applying for your test and need that last confidence boost ! Only 4 hours of the day are spent driving which for a complete beginner 20 hours is no where near enough road experience, the theory part is wonderful, pretty much guaranteed pass but it is a lot of money for a guaranteed theory pass, out of a class of 10 only 2 people felt ready at the end of my week so I didn't feel filled with confidence at the approach ! My instructor was awful, late every day, very unsociable considering I had to spend the week with her, very rushed in her teaching methods and I have since discovered she told me incorrect information, she was more concerned with animals !? Making me stop to avoid and then looking at cats, squirrels and pigeons .... Yep ! The general concensus after the 5 days was that most of the class would take more lessons and then put in for a faster test in a month or so, but I didn't want to give 5day false statistics looking like I passed using only the 5day facility so have since taken extra lessons and passed the "normal" and in my eyes the only practical way !! Not the quick fix you hope for ....

Sorry to hear of your complaints. After checking your daily reports I see that you marked your instructor 4 out of 5 every day of the course week and gave us an overall score of 4 out of 5 at the end of the week. Unfortunately if you do not inform us of any issues whilst on the course we are unable to action any changes.

There are options if you are not ready to take your driving test and you do not have to purchase any more lessons. Speak to the Course Manager please.

Negative experience: Good when its good but overall very poorly managed. First, I missed my first theory test because of a 5Day's awful email system. Up until I applied for my theory test through 5day, all the emails I had received up to that point were labeled '5day' in either the subject line or the sender's name but the one email that the really counted (the theory test confirmation email) was ambiguously labeled 'digital Operations' so I completely missed it when I mistook it for junk/spam. I complained to 5day about this and was simply told that this had not happened to other customers in the past. In other words - Too Bad! I sucked it up and re-applied for for second test. Then came the actual practical test. First time around, my instructor (who was excellent throughout) goes on holiday so I have to do my test in a car I had not driven before. I get an hour's practice to get used to the car but 1 hour doesn't compare to 20 hours in car you're used to. I fail but fair enough - there was nothing that 5Day could do to avoid this since my instructor was absent. Second time around, my instructor is back but guess what - he buys a new car so once again I am thrown into a car I'm not used to driving. I fail again on car controls and again, fair enough, there was nothing 5day could have done to avoid this. What bothered me was 5Day's attitude when I inquired about a possible refund due to being thrown into a new vehicle for both tests. They tell me their 'Terms and Conditions' protect them from my complaint. They tell me that 5Day teaches you how to drive 'Not 1 car, but all cars in general', as if there is no difference between a new vehicle and one that I've spent 20 hours in. Also, during an email exchange, 5day has the audacity to call me 'ridiculous' and 'Irrelevant' for probing them why I had been given a different car for my test. At that point I was simply trying to find out what new car my instructor had bought but 5day seemed very reluctant to tell me. This is categorically unacceptably bad service from a company that I had paid well over a thousand pounds - I expected better.
