Negative experience: Initially, I was not going to leave a review as I felt it would probably be unfair after not even completing a full lesson. However, part of the reason I contacted Mike was because of his many positive reviews, so I feel I should share the bad experience I had with him. I have had three other prior instructors who I had to change for various reasons, and obviously all provided me with feedback and pointed out my mistakes as I was driving, and I did not have an issue with it. I found the way Mike spoke to me while driving very condescending, and after probably not even half an hour into the lesson, he seemed to be becoming impatient and frustrated with me. I started to feel nervous to even do anything out of fear I would get something wrong. He gives me the impression he is not at all open to any criticism about the way he teaches, commenting that if I don't want to be told what I'm doing wrong then I should just get an instructor that doesn't teach me. He made me feel like the problem was with me and told me that I am oversensitive. But now after looking into it more I can see that there are other people who've had lessons with him and feel similarly. Edit: very unprofessional response from you. Resorting to personal attacks and baseless speculation after I left a bad review is beyond pathetic. My previous instructors did not "make up excuses to stop seeing me". With my first instructor I started when I was unemployed and then got a job after starting, so my schedule and availability changed. The second one had to stop because the amount of roadworks in town at the time made it not feasible for her because of how long it would take her to travel to see me. And my most recent one had an injury while on holiday and so is not able to teach at all. I said to you that I had my test in March but that I did not feel ready and would most likely end up pushing it back. When we pulled over, I felt overwhelmed and at first I said I was okay because I felt embarrassed about the fact I was getting upset and was trying my best not to. But after we switched over I admitted to you that it was the way you were speaking to me. "Controlling behaviour" this is a genuinely laughable accusation. How is an involuntary response controlling behaviour? And to what end? What do you I think I was trying to control you to do exactly? The reality is that you are charging people money for a service, and if I have an unpleasant experience and feel that your teaching style contributed to that, then I have every right to leave a review saying that so people can make up their own mind about it. And after reading some of your reviews, I can see that there are others who share this sentiment and have a substantial amount of likes. If you feel that your teaching style works for most people and thus don't feel there is an issue, then that is fair enough, but it is perfectly reasonable for me to leave a review informing other people about it.

Disappointed to receive your 1 start Google Review. As you state, it is unfair of you to do so based on less than an hour together. Looking back, the fact that you had already had 3 instructors who all made excuses to stop teaching you, should have raised alarm bells. I have since looked at your Facebook page. No picture of you but in big letters,” I HATE EVERYTHING”. You called me and I decided that I would try and help you. Straight away you moved away without any observations or mirrors and kept on getting too close to parked vehicles when going round them. You continued to do this as we drove, even though you said that you understood what I was saying to you. You said that you had poor spatial awareness. I praised your control of the vehicle and gave you encouragement when possible. However, I ended up having to pull you over as I felt you were still getting too close to other vehicles. That is when you started to get teary and I asked if you were OK. You refused to answer even though it was clear you were upset. This is controlling behaviour. In the end you said that I was treating you like an idiot. I was genuinely surprised as I thought you were upset due to not driving as well as you probably could. I tried to explain that it was my job to keep us and others safe. Bear in mind that you had told me that your test was just over a month and a half away. Based on what I had seen, I said that I was not the right instructor for you. I could not teach someone if I could not point out their faults without them getting upset. As you state, I do have many positive reviews, which shows my techniques work for most people and have done so for around 20 years. Do you really think that if I was rude and condescending, that I would have been here now? I do not understand why after half an hour you feel I should change how I teach. Maybe you should be looking closer to home if you want to blame someone. My advice about not being over sensitive is not rude, it is good advice. People get on differently. All you have to do is find someone else whose style you prefer.

Fantastic experience: Mike is a very patient and friendly driving instructor, I struggled with driving for a long time but with Mike's help I passed last week. I work full time in a fairly high pressured role and Mike was very flexible and understanding with lesson timing as well so can definitely recommend if you work full time.
