Negative experience: This is a terrible test centre and I wouldn't advice anyone to go there again. The examiner cancelled my test because there was a small crack on my windshield meanwhile the car just passed MOT so why will it pass MOT if that crack which is even on the paasenger side be dangerous to drive? DVSA is now asking me to pay again to rebook my test. My suggestion, choose Ipswich.

Fantastic experience: Mel should be one of the best examiners at Colchester test center. Good and well detailed explanation before the start of the test. She was calm and welcoming which made me relaxed from the beginning of the test unlike how many others make people feel nervous. It was really a good and nice experience.

Positive experience: Had my test with test instructor Mel for the 2nd time She was very nice and had a conversation with me throughout the test which made it less tense. Given it a 4 because the routes were crazy hard and I think all beginner drivers would purposely not go on the hardest routes until they were fully confident. But Mel was great. Colchester test route is mad hard

Negative experience: The worst center to appear ; examiners are cold ; don't give clear instructions ; poor feedback after failing ; make you feel like you are the worst driver alive ; If you wanna shatter your confidence or pay endlessly to the driver instructors until you pass,goahead otherwise not worth your time. 22 Years of my driving experience back home, 1 year here,still they always found some excuse to fail,till I changed center.

Negative experience: I wouldn’t even give these a 1 star The examiners at this test centre will fail you on the littlest thing The one today was so rude We was 5 mins late which we had already called and told them Started moaning at us that he will be late for his next test and he don’t know if he will even do the test Made us feel so uncomfortable On the test he grabbed the wheel when a car overtook and said he was too close Now I understand why there are so many available slots at this centre Would not recommend this test centre at all!!!!!!

Fantastic experience: I successfully passed my driving test with zero minors, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had such an amazing examiner in the last days of 2023. She was truly exceptional, showing understanding and patience throughout the process. Her excellent people skills made the experience memorable. Negative experience: Worst driving examiner I’ve ever come across, I had a blonde lady, rude and obnoxious! She yanked the wheel out of my hand even though I was in my lane with the car visibly being within the white lines and nearly hit another car in the process of her yanking at the steering wheel, she said she mainly failed me because I wasn’t allowed to do a second attempt at parking and then shouted in my face, I have sensitive hearing and this put me off the rest of my test! Second main reason for her Is because went through a puddle! I can’t believe this! She made me feel so unsafe and uncomfortable, I parked back at the test centre, when she went back in she laughed and pointed at the car while I was visibly upset now I don’t want to take my test here again

Fantastic experience: I came from Kent to Colchester for my driving test. It was the earliest and closest test available for me. I didn’t know the area or roads at all but thankfully passed! Jeff was my examiner and I really appreciate how calm and comfortable he made me feel, he really put my nerves at ease! Thank you Jeff!

Negative experience: women I had today was rude didn’t make you feel comfortable at all, got failed for waiting on a roundabout when someone to my right wasn’t indicating so I was being safe and got failed for it, I had to follow her directions in which she said left then corrected herself to right 3 times so she made multiple mistakes confusing me, wasted my time and money, not a kind lady you should be trying to make individuals be comfortable.

Fantastic experience: Had the pleasure of martin for both my tests, 1st one i failed but martin explained to me exactly where i went wrong in order for me to learn from this, (my grandad also passed away the same morning so my head wasnt really in it tbh) but martin was very kind and fair. 2nd attempt i had martin again, really is a lovely man , passed me with 2minors.

Negative experience: Colchester is home to one of the infamous magic roundabouts. Look it up before you book your test here! The examiners are pretty strict, but professional. I was disappointed that they didn’t go through the faults at the end, just said to read the report via email. It would have been helpful to know where mistakes were made and what to focus on and improve!

Negative experience: Re: Jeff Jeff is the rudest, most arrogant examiner I have ever had the distaste of meeting in my life. He could have told me off myself and I would be less angered by his actions on my test. It was even to the point where he made random noises to put me off.

Fantastic experience: Martin. He is the best lad you can have as your instructor. We need more people like him who make the driver comfortable.

Fantastic experience: I drove from London for a test and I passed. It was a great experience, the examiner was politely distant ( I suppose it is out of their job nature ) yet a very kind gentleman. The Test Centre is peaceful and has a relaxing cafe right next to it. The road of Colchester is a challenging one with so many roundabouts. I suggest some study on google map or arrive a little early to get yourself familiar with the environment if you are not local.

Negative experience: They are making up reasons to fail people here, i’ve taken my test 3 times at Colchester in my own car (which doesn’t seem to be liked by any examiner). My most recent test i got 1 minor and then was told when i got back i’d failed, i had absolutely no idea why, questioned the examiner and he said when i turned right at a crossroads a car in the distance would of had to have slowed down, i took a safe gap and the car was nowhere near me! This place is an absolute joke, they are pumping out extra tests for overtime and failing people to continue their options of more money in their pockets with extra hours. Also get the sense they don’t like women very much, the recent pass rates in the 30% mark speaks for itself. Avoid at all costs they just see you as a cash cow, the examiners need investigating. Update: I took my test in a new area that i wasn’t familiar with 2 weeks after writing the above review and passed with flying colours, no different to tests i had taken here - point proven.

Fantastic experience: Hi folks, My experience with this centre was a good one. I drove all the way from London and went in 5 minutes before my scheduled time. The tester came out on time, and we started straight away after paperwork and visual acuity test. It's an easy and relaxing place in regards to atmosphere and parking etc. so you won't feel nervous. I passed my test at first go. Overall i am satisfied with the centre atmosphere. Good luck, everyone..!!

Fantastic experience: Jeff was my examiner for two tests. I failed the 1st one but passed my second one with him! He was absolutely kind and relaxing, I was super nervous and he allowed me to pull up and relax! Really appreciate that Jeff!!! Passedddd !

Negative experience: On gov you can’t even get any slots to book your exam, when you finally manage to book it your test after 6months waiting might be cancelled or they will change your date. This happen to me for few times, I was waiting to re-book again for more then 4months. Finally when I got the chance to do my test, the instructor was asking me more question then he should and also he was keep playing with my sat nav.. Done my exam and at the end he told me 5min before finish my exam we going back and the ‘mistake was’ that i didn’t over take bus which was about to pull over from bus stop. So fail under hesitation. He was making me to try make mistake when I didn’t give him a reason to fail me he come up with the bus situation. Not recommended..

Fantastic experience: I rated 5 star despite passing the test on 2nd attempt . 1. The Test centre has clean facilities and ample waiting space . 2. At 1st Attempt , Justin was examiner . His instructions were quite clear . His feedback was quite helpful in improving the driving . 3. In 2nd attempt , Chris was examiner . His instructions were quite clear. Cleared the test . Yayyy ! Both Examiners were completely professional . Point is to focus on the instructions given by Examiner and remain calm .

Negative experience: I am not happy with there services Was not able to take my test because they claim that I was late , despite the fact that I called the center that I was running late due to unmoving traffic .I was 13 min late.

Positive experience: Today I had my driving test at Colchester test centre. I have passed my test (first time). Mr. Jeff was my examiner, he instructed each and everything clearly and that made me each movements really easier while my driving. Thank you Mr. Jeff NB: The above mentioned comments as per my personal experience and those may vary depending upon other people’s experiences.

Negative experience: Worst driving test centra my daughter stall her car and that was a mina and they fail her for it . It's a shame that they have this man keep failing all the back kids for what reason.

Negative experience: AVOID AT ALL COST! I have sent this to the dvla and am awaiting a reply. I am writing to complain about the service/attitude of one of your examiners, based at Colchester test centre. We had to travel 35 miles to attend this centre, so left in plenty of time, due to local roadworks causing heavy traffic. We parked in the centre and were about to leave to go for a coffee, when we were approached by an examiner. He asked if we were there for a test, we replied yes, he said ‘well, you can’t park there, you’re blocking it for candidates’. I looked around and we were the only car in the car park. Picture attached image.png We therefore moved. Upon arriving again for the test we were waited in the room for the examiner. The examiner came out and called ‘Edward’. Edward greeted him and went to shake his hand. The examiner looked at his hand and said ‘yeah, licence’. Edward was nervous enough and I feel that this didn’t help. They went to the car and we through the pre test checks. The examiner got into the car and asked Edward to to put the AC on. Edward explained that the car didn’t have AC and turned on the fan. The examiner said ‘turn that off and open all the windows then’. With the windows open and local traffic noise, it was quite loud in the car. Edward asked the examiner if he could speak up and was answered with a curt ‘no, I shouldn’t have to’. Edward completed his test (which he failed) and once parked was told why. Edward was disappointed but accepted the decision. Edward again went to shake the man’s hands and he just looked at it and walked off. If he didn’t want to shake hands, all he had to say was ‘sorry, no due to covid’, but he chose not to, twice. When the examiner walked away from the car, I asked how Edward had got on. I was told to ‘ask him’ in a very dismissive way. I spoke to Edward, who explained everything that I have previously written. I think that the examiners at that centre are very rude and condescending and that this particular examiner was a pig of a man. He seem to revel in bullying candidates and demeaning to them and their parents. I am available anytime to provide further details of this incident, and would be greatly surprised if this is the first occurrence. I look forward to a reply.

Fantastic experience: I had Pete as my driving instructor for my second attempt. He made me feel comfortable and felt like driving with a friend, not an examiner! The conversations we had were pleasant and made my nerves go away. Failed first time to some temporary traffic lights, but am so pleased to have now passed! Thank you Pete!

Fantastic experience: This was my first test and I'm glad I passed with only a mirror fault. The examiner was very supportive, kind and patient Before starting the test, I explained that my first language is not English and please repeat if I do not understand. Also my first time driving in this area and please indicate the route. That's why they deserve 5 stars. I advise you to let them know if you have any issues or need help before starting. Of course, I drove outside the UK for about 17 years and inside the UK for 1.5 years

Negative experience: I’ve done my driving test here 3 times and the first times the instructors were friendly and generally pleasant to be examined by. However, my third attempt at Colchester was 2 days ago now and it was honestly a joke! the examiner was blunt and failed me for allegedly not checking a mirror ‘ideally’ even though there was no immediate danger, hence the word ‘ideally’. If you can, i’d avoid this test centre at all costs. On another attempt the examiner made up a random show me tell me question that is never seen anywhere online or read, so in reality the instructors run these tests off a whim. I’ve also noticed that a lot of the examiners are friends with people taking the tests, so unless you are close with anyone working at this test centre, don’t bother doing your test here.

Negative experience: Just avoid this test centre. Most of the staff is really just rude and make you feel more nervous from the beginning to the end of the test. AVOID at all costs!

Fantastic experience: All really nice and polite examiner's

Negative experience: I had my practical test at Colchester Test Centre on September 8th 2021. The examiner was truly lovely and respected my desire to not talk during my exam so I could concentrate better. The examiner also made some kind comments about my driving after he told me I had passed. However, despite me handing in my green provisional licence to the examiner immediately after the test (because my address had not changed), it has been coming up to 7 months since I passed and I still not received my full licence. I have spent months chasing this up with the DVLA via email and was sent in administrative circles, and met with phone lines that would cut out after waiting on hold for hours. All this only to be told very recently via phone call that there was no record of an application for my full licence and I that I would have to make a new application and attach the certificate proving that I passed and wait anew. I have now sent in the fresh application, but this whole process has been extremely worrisome and frustrating as I was explicitly told that if I handed in my provisional licence upon passing, I would receive my full license in the post.

Fantastic experience: I had Martin for my test and he was lovely, very calm and friendly. I read all the reviews in the days leading up to my test and was convinced I’d fail because of the amount of bad reviews. I passed first time with 7 minors in my own car. Please do not let the reviews put you off.

Fantastic experience: Had my 2nd go with Pete as my examiner. Great guy and made me feel at ease! Was nice conversing with him to help me feel relaxed. (Proof on my Apple watch, before the exam my nerves were so bad my heart rate shot up to 156bpm LOL and during the exam it was around 80-90bpm.) My first go was with Justin -also a lovely examiner! Clear and concise with instructions. The centre has toilets which was convenient and there is a nearby cafe too!

Fantastic experience: As Test Centres go, the Colchester one is pretty nice, it also has toilet facilities. And there is a cafe opposite , you cross the road and tea and coffee awaits along with anything you want to eat . It has plenty of space and has adequate bays for parking and one way in and one way out , brilliant ! Instructors are allowed to come into the centre to practice, there where a few practicing whilst we where waiting to go out on a Test , very chilled. The examiner we had was very pleasant.

He was very professional, he introduced himself to me and even asked me how i would want him to call me, he made it feel comfortable being around him, my first 2 instructor did not mention their names and all i felt was awkwardness with the first 2 examiners I had. Thank you Justin for showing professionalism. To other examiners, please no need to be awkward, grumpy and miserable.

Negative experience: I had my first ever driving test on the 14th of July .I had Jeff ,from the start he appeared cold and rude .He acted like he didnt care about my test .I used my own car and had a mechanic look at my car beforehand .He walked round the car multiple times ,feeling my tires .He said they needed more air and it looked like i wasnt even going to have my test .He even asked if i had a pump to pump them up .He said "we will see how we go ".He made me feel very anxious and was very rude when i had forgotten my pen .I asked if i could use his as i had hand sanitizer but he redused and made me go into the centre to find one .He also barked orders at me to open my door full and to get out of my car .When i took the wrong exit at the roundabout he acted very annoyed .He failed me on minors and was extremely negative about my result .He also asked me to move my L plates down lower eventhough they werre clearly visible .As soon as we got in the car he complained about where my extra interior mirror was ,eventhough my driving instructor said it was perfect .He was silent for most of thr journey .I had 2 tests cancelled due to covid and have waited nearly a year for this one so i already had a lot of pressure to pass and he did not show any consideration.

Negative experience: The worst driving examiner I have come across to date. Not sure of her name, but in her 50s. We travelled 135 miles to get to the driving centre, the examiner came into the carpark, forgot her mirror went back to get it, and by the time she had completed the one question about tire tread, all other students had gone out. I watched as she sat in the car with my wife, they advanced 20 ft down the car park, at which point she told my wife to reverse park which she did and then failed her because she supposedly she bumpes the kerb. She did not even give my wife time to settle in the car even 1 min before failingng her. When I approached the examiner to ask what was the problems, she muttered under breath and then walked away, I asked again what was the problem, at which point she angrily replied she hit the bollard and the test was over. I said to her it was hardly fair that she hadn't even given her the chance to settle her nervousness even for 1 minute. The examiner appeared to be angry, and I would recommend that the examiner leave job and maybe get something more suited such as retirement. I think the treatment my wife received was disgusting and I voiced my opinion. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY BY CHOOSING COLCHESTER.

Fantastic experience: I had mine today with J.Ward and i pass it , was a pleasure to have him with me in the car, was a pleasure to be there , is shame they are not to many like him , i said to him before we go back on the center , i don't care if i pass or failed he is a very nice and calm person !! Negative experience: Examiner Michael failed me due to some fictional pedestrian, preparing to cross the road. But there were no any pedestrians there, I feel that the true reason is just that I’m not English.

Fantastic experience: I had my driving test this week and had Justin as my examiner. I was nervous but Justin was very pleasant and made me feel at ease. His instructions were clear throughout and made my experience better than anticipated. Thank you :-)

Negative experience: Had the same examiner three times in a row ( Jeff). He's very cold and condescending. Feels as though he intentionally tries to put you off. Told me to hurry up out the car park at the centre although there was evidently another examiner standing behind my car. If i didnt do full observations I'm sure thst would have been a problem too. Doesn't take into account the circumstances of the situation and seems itchy to find fault/ step in unnecessarily without giving you a chance to correct it.

Negative experience: Colchester driving test center needs to be closed or better still reassesse all the examiners especially Jeff and Simmons or whatever, they are all just there waiting for learners to fail. All reviews about this center are appalling. Something needs to be done .

Fantastic experience: I had my practical test at DVLA Test Centre Colchester, 14th Nov 2017. My Examiner Sam was an absolute delight, she made me feel very comfortable in the car and was very clear and open when giving instruction.
