There were several occasions where his attitude was way off and comments were made that really affected my confidence, which led to me taking longer to think about and make decisions at first until i began to ignore these comments. However, he was always on time to lessons, always explained things through and went through things at a good speed and didn't rush me into anything, or hold me back. Thank you again Russ!

Fantastic experience: Passed my driving test recently with Russ with zero faults. He is an excellent instructor who is very observant, informative, reassuring and supportive. Lessons and progression are done at a pace that suits you whilst also being constructively challenging to ensure your driving keeps improving. Russ is incredibly professional and always on time without fail, so you always get a full lesson unlike some instructors. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.

I have aspergers with serious social anxiety and an almost phobia of driving, Russ was so calm with me, he didn't chatter useless stuff in my ear, he just explained what I needed to do and guided me through it. Although I passed my test in couple of attempts but that was due to COVID as I was not able to practice in the test centre area. But when I passed last week, I passed when only 1 minor.

Negative experience: For some reason it doesn't let me do 0 stars not sure why but this guy is so overrated. I used to do my driving lessons with him (switched instructors) up at top valley and honesty I was not making any progress with him. The first lesson was good maybe because I was a brand new learner tho. After it just went downhill. The guy has got a short temper, more of a teller rather than teacher, overall an annoying guy. The only way I would feel a bit better about paying this guy is if I get confirmation that some of the lesson money was being put in anger management support. He is so confident with himself as well I can tell he thinks he's the best driving instructor in Europe. When I take my lessons with my current instructor I look forward to the lesson but with russ I honestly was dreading it. I only kept going because I wanted a bit of consistency and he was local to me but enough was enough. At the start he used to speak a lot, but then later barely spoke which isn't an issue but just awkward at times. He has probably the best prices in Nottingham ill give him that, but sometimes cheap is expensive... hand on heart I have learnt SO much more now in a shorter period paying a higher price. A weird thing he did was ask if i've paid? It takes 30secs to check so annoying. Based on other reviews I have a feeling that russ tutors males and females differently. I won't be surprised... always wearing them shades no matter the weather a bit creepy. Overall, if you're a male trying to do lessons avoid this guy, even if the price is making too much sense don't do it, not worth it I promise. Confidence is crucial when driving but this guy literally takes it from you and throws it out the window. Take your time when looking for a driving instructor trust me! russ craplin tut tut tut

Fantastic experience: Russ is a brilliant instructor and I would recommend him to anyone. He is a nice person and always is up for a chat while your driving round, he can always find a subject that you both up for talking about, whether it be games or current events . In addition, he explains the roads in clear understandable ways for first time drivers. With the maneuvers if there's a trick Russ knows them all no matter where or when. If anyone wants to pass their driving test Russ is the man for the job.

Fantastic experience: I can’t thank Russ enough for his patience with me over the past couple of years. Fantastic experience: Russ is an amazing instructor. He is very down to earth and has always had patience with me and was okay with me learning at my own pace. Always asked if I was 100% with something or if I wanted to carry on if I was unsure before we moved on. Negative experience: Don't believe I was making enough progress with Russ. He was reliable, no problem with that. Spent half an hour of my 15 lessons driving around unstimulating loop at top valley with little instruction or learning opportunities. Thought he was remote, no conversation which doesn't help and occasionally he was short tempered. Didn't like him stopping for petrol in my time without asking me first. ( for whose benefit? ) Comfortably worst instructor I've worked and thought he was just after my money. Wouldn't recommend.

Fantastic experience: My experience with Russ was beyond excellent. I had started driving lessons with another instructor but due to Covid we had to stop and then he wasn’t in the business anymore. When I started the lessons with Russ, I was very nervous and had zero confidence behind the wheel. Russ was very methodical and patient with me. His detailed explanation and calm approach was very helpful and thanks to that I passed the test from the first attempt in a short amount of time! I’d highly recommend Russ for those who want to pass the test and be confident in their driving.

Fantastic experience: I definitely recommend Russ if you are looking for a good, patient driving instructor. Last week I took my driving test and passed first time, something I never initially thought would happen but he gave me all the skills and confidence I needed. I've heard of other instructors holding you back to ensure more money is coming in but that's not the case here, once I had the skills I booked my driving test but unfortunately that was quite a while in the future due to Covid delays. He encouraged me to continue practice on my own i.e. in my own car or with a friend (legally of course!) rather than to keep buying lessons. Russ is always on time (literally bang on the minute) and pushes you, especially in the areas you are most scared/uncomfortable with. I used to be a very nervous driver but I've been driving every day since I passed with complete confidence.

Fantastic experience: Passed my test with Russ in Oct 2020 at the 2nd attempt . If you want a professional instructor who arrives on time, gives you your entire time, doesn't distract you with endless chit chat, keeps it simple and honest about your abilities then Russ is the person to go with. If you are somebody who doesn't want to mess around and get the job done then he is perfect for you. I was a late starter to driving, I never thought I would ever pass my test. Started with Russ in August 2019. Immediately, i was happy with his timing and that during the lessons he simply allowed me to drive and I didn't feel the pressure of constantly having to talk or listen while I was driving. He kept it simple throughout, wouldn't get annoyed if I was a bit hard on the gears, breaks or going over humps. When i did dumb things i realised he wouldn't hold on to it or remain annoyed. He simply corrected them at the time and then carried on. I liked the fact that he would make notes of our progress and the lessons progressed in a very structured and methodical manner. He is very honest about your abilities and will never need to push him about taking a test as he himself will tell you when it is the right time. Thanks again Russ for all your help and support... bet your glad to see the back of me lol.

Negative experience: I started my driving lessons with Russ but unfortunately my experience had similarities to that of another reviewer: Harry Taylor. Russ was always on time and I made good progress whilst he was teaching me. However, I found that he was overly critical, continually misread my behaviour and abilities, and was dismissive of the responses or explanations I gave to him. He was insistent that I am anxious and a nervous driver, regardless of how many times I explained that isn't the case. Any nerves that I did have when driving came from his tuition, pressurising and criticism. I would dread my lessons and sometimes finished lessons close to tears. This began early on and was made worse by him mixing up my notes with someone else's a few lessons in so he thought I had covered far more than I had and therefore carried out a wholly inappropriate lesson and then criticised me for not being able to do things. I didn't want the confrontation and, therefore, didn't raise this whilst I was having lessons with him so he didn't have the chance to rectify his actions. When I emailed him afterwards, he did apologise and said that he had no idea. I was able to switch to another driving instructor to finish my lessons and have just passed first time. My experience with my recent driving instructor was completely different and I was eventually able to lose the nerves and bad habits I had picked up with Russ. Clearly many others have had positive experiences with Russ but sadly that wasn't my experience and I wanted to share this in case others feel the same way.

Fantastic experience: I am looking for an instructor for a family member and I am so glad I found Russ. I passed with Russ 10 years ago and would highly recommend anyone to him. He is just what you need very professional and straight to the point no messing about. I was very nervous at the start but he is amazing and makes you feel at ease. Communication was always great and he was always on time. I also did my pass plus with him and drove to sheffield and back in heavy rain. Again absolutely brilliant guidance and support throughout. Dont go anywhere else!

Fantastic experience: Viewer, Wow! What a journey it has been with Russ - from “that’s very dangerous.. why did you brake...” to passing my test in first attempt! Russ has all the qualities that are required in an instructor. He gives prompt feedback, ensures that we achieve perfection in all the manoeuvres, and no! you simply cannot influence or pressurise him to take test early! An instructor must exhibit harshness and kindness appropriately when required and Russ knows it best. Another best thing with him is that he will take you through all the complex navigations, so that at the time of test you never feel that you are doing anything different. My work gave me a unrealistic time to pass my driving test by and thanks to Russ and all his hard work, Today i PASSED my test first time with 6 faults and Russ warned me about them. So you want the best driving insturctor, then you come to right place. Trust me. 10/10.

Negative experience: Positives - Russ is a very professional instructor, he is always on time and is very organised with lesson structure. He is very methodical and thorougher, he will make sure you know something 100% before you move onto the next thing. Negatives - Russ was not very friendly towards me, we would sit in almost silence for the entire journey, it was very serious and quite an intense environment. I would often find Russ getting quite angry and frustrated with me when i made mistakes, he would say "why are you doing that?, "what is wrong with you today, do you want to stop?" this resulted in my confidence being knocked massively and i never looked forward to driving lessons. I had around 15 hours with Russ and he said i was 20% complete. From the reviews it is clear that Russ may be a very good instructor to some but for me he has knocked my driving confidence massively.

Fantastic experience: After driving with just the basics of driving Russ managed to get me in top shape ready for my test in 19 lessons which I did fail my test the first time down to my own error not Russ's but he made sure I corrected it he was patience and great at telling me anything I wanted to no simple or details he always made sure I knew what I was doing brill instructor good laugh and person passed my 2nd time 3 minors :D highly recommended thanks very much Russ Chaplin.

Fantastic experience: Russ is an expert instructor. When Russ started teaching me I’d just come back to driving after a couple of years away from lessons and was basically starting again - I was very rusty, had a lot to learn and wasn’t very confident on the road, I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor to change that. Russ is a calm and direct teacher, telling you exactly the information you need to learn and improve. He quickly identified the areas that were causing me difficulty and helped me to tackle them. Russ is faultlessly punctual and was on time for every single lesson. He also encouraged me to take my practical test as soon as he thought I was ready. When I started, I expected that I’d probably need months of lessons and several attempts at the test, I actually had a few weeks of lessons and passed the test first time. Part of what makes Russ an excellent teacher is that he doesn’t just teach what you need to take the test, he teaches you to actually drive and gives you the skills necessary to deal with everyday situations on the road. This means that not only have I got my licence but I also feel confident to now go out on my own. I’m very happy with Russ’s teaching and requested to take Pass Plus with him to take my learning even further. Thanks, Russ!

Fantastic experience: After my first driving instructor putting me down and wasting my time, in the first lesson Russ already had me doing more and got my confidence up instantly. In the lessons we would work on everything, not just what you need to pass but anything you may need when driving. His lessons were very useful and from this i needed only 14 lessons until I went and passed my test 1st time. I would highly recommend Russ to anyone!

Fantastic experience: I saw myself as a nervous driver but after a few weeks russ changed that and made me into the safe driver I am now. I managed to pass first time on my practical with the one and a half hour lessons being very useful as you can cover a larger amount of stuff in one lesson- brilliant instructor would definitely recommend

Fantastic experience: Russ is a fantastic driving instructor who managed to turn a person who was very unsure and nervous about driving into someone who passed first time Russ was always friendly and was very easy to get along with i'm gonna miss our lessons and our conversations. Fantastic experience: Russ was an excellent instructor, he always made me feel at ease as i was a nervous pupil, even when i doubted myself he always believed in me. Russ would always try his best to work around me their were moments when things wasn't easy with having 3 children but he always understood and helped me as best as possible. Always on time, not one lesson with me was he unable to attend and i was beign instructed by Russ for a while THANK YOU Russ all the best in the future.

Fantastic experience: Russ was a very professional instructor: very punctual, patient and supportive. I never felt any nerves when driving in his car as he was always calm and if I was ever unsure as to what to do all I need do is ask. Simultaneously, each lesson was challenging and interesting. The car was clean and never underpreformed which was comforting. I am very thankful to him as I owe my licence to him and wish him all the best for the future
