Shield Motorcycle Rider Training: Reviews
Negative experience: Absolutely awful place to learn how to ride a motorbike. It was my first ever time on a bike and all I received was abuse, foul language and no support or training. Facilities were awful, bikes were falling apart and instructor wasn’t far behind them. If it’s your first time, look elsewhere and make the experience enjoyable and you actually be able to leave there feeling like you learnt something and excited to begin your biking journey. For information, I sat my CBT with Neil around 8 months ago but refused to leave a review, but feel it is about time I let people know my experience!
Negative experience: Worse instructor in teeside, rude and doesnt know how to pass his knowledge. if you want to be shouted and not receiving any chance to make mistakes, go to this guy. Nasty if you do anything wrong. He keeps swearing at you treating you as if you are an idiot. avoid at all costs.
Fantastic experience: If you want to learn how to actually ride you bike, safely and confidently there is absolute no other instructor to use. Neil will teach you everything you need to know, and make sure you understand why....He has the patience of a saint, god knows he needed it with me, but will kick your arse till you get it right. Had and absolutely brilliant day of learning and confidence building, loved it. Get yourself booked in now.
Negative experience: If you’ve never been on a bike I would avoid at all cost He expects you to be able to jump on a bike and ride straight away. If you do one thing wrong he will be nasty with you and he doesn’t help at all. Save your money and go to a training school
Fantastic experience: Brilliant instructor he's very knowledgeable very firm but fair I highly recommend Neil I will definitely be using Neil again to do my full bike licence thanks again.
Fantastic experience: Great guy Neil, good trainer would recommend
Fantastic experience: Such a nice and honest man, I would recommend Neil so much. He really wants you to be safe and he’s very patient. I went to take my CBT having never driven a motorbike before. Through practicing in the car park, I panicked, had my eyes locked on the curb (despite Neil yelling to turn off the throttle) and crashed into a hedge whilst the bike toppled over, barely missing my ankle! Entirely my fault but Neil was very supportive and warned me that driving a motorbike can get dangerous quickly. Having talked for a while about his experiences and how just the smallest things like weight distribution or target fixation can make a ride turn sour, I realised my limits as a driver. I made my own decision to call it quits. Neil never pushed me to quit, he gave me as much advice and information for me to make an informed decision as he truly cares about my safety rather than dumbing it down, telling me that it’s a small hiccup, and he gets a cash grab at the end of the day - if I did what I had done on the road, I might not be here writing this review. We both knew this. For his honesty, despite me not passing my CBT, I couldn’t recommend him more. Thank you, Neil.
Fantastic experience: I got my CBT certificate last week after a day and a half training, Neil was great, instantly felt comfortable. Neil was very patient, gave great advice and tips and made sure I went away not only with my CBT certificate but also with the knowledge and confidence to be able to be safe on the road. I would highly recommend neil.
Fantastic experience: Great guy, teaches you how to ride where others just teach you how to get your cbt done. Will definitely be using again for my full license training!
Positive experience: First time on a motorcycle, Neil made me feel comfortable, after a good day of riding and learning, I still needed more practice,I returned for another half day riding, and then I was ready for the road,Neil talked me through, and really made me feel comfortable. Tough, firm, safe, and of course friendly, Would recommend Needless to say I received my CBT, certificate Thanks Neil, great Tutor
Fantastic experience: Neil is an outstanding instructor. He is knowledgeable, decisive, firm and relentless! His aim is to keep you alive and produce accomplished riders, so don’t expect an easy pass. I highly recommend Shield!
Fantastic experience: Took cbt yesterday with Neil totally enjoyed the experience. Advice anybody who wants cbt training to come here. As Neil is top instructor, strict but very fair, your safety is his top priority. Definitely be going back to complete part 1 & 2 of Motorcycle test. Thanks Neil for all of your advice and for the experience. Ian Mcguinness
Fantastic experience: Don't train with anyone else. Passed my CBT and started lessons with Ace motorcycles which were average at best, 6, 1 hour lessons but felt 0 improvement. Decided to switch trainer and it was the best decision I made. Turned up and trained for the MOD 1 stuff, Neil asked what I had learnt so showed him (most of it was lacklustre due to being rushed through at Ace and not having 1-2-1 training). I learnt more in 1 lesson with Neil than I did over my CBT and 6 hours of lessons for my DAS licence with the other company. I have aspergers and he didn't treat me any different. If something wasn't good enough he would tell you, so you did it until it was and I liked that, as beforehand if you did it wrong the other rider had their go and then it was 'we'll do it again next week'. I was shown proper clutch control, demonstrations, how the bike worked, how different things affected the bike in different ways, his knowledge and explanations were just spot on to the point I actually enjoyed my lessons and had a good laugh with him. I passed my MOD 1 and MOD 2 first time (in May 2017) and was ready and prepared to go out on my Triumph Daytona 675. Probably not the best first bike but with his training you'll be one of the best new bikers on the road. Thanks for everything and for over 1 years happy riding far! Jonathan Fleming.
Fantastic experience: Best instructor plenty of experience high recommendation. Thanks for that mate.
Fantastic experience: Quality driving ,strict but fare
Negative experience: Could probably try and not be so negative as peoples needs are all different
Fantastic experience: Great experience today doing my cbt with Neil, he’s a great teacher and knows his stuff, I have finished the day with full confidence to take to the road.
Fantastic experience: Best instructors by fare
Fantastic experience: what a great bloke and knows his stuff. took my test with him and passed. I think he is that good I'm going to get him to teach my partner and my 16 year old son
Fantastic experience: Passing a test to ride a bike, or “doing your CBT” are just tasks, much like a vehicle MOT, the bare minimum required. 2 wheeled vehicles are inherently dangerous, so the training you receive should be the best for you. Whether you have driven your whole life, or even ridden bikes for a couple of years, you could be given a certificate to say you can legally ride on the road, but being able to ride safely and properly is a different scenario. Since training with Neil, I have covered nearly half a million miles on a bike. Was it easy training? No. But when I was done, I felt confident (not cocky), and the training stuck. Whilst many had spills because of their lack of knowledge, I was scoping the street for blown over bins and loose dogs. Believe me, the extra work will allow you to enjoy your bike so much more, and unleash your potential. I ride with a couple of guys who came to Neil for extra training after passing their test, and were shocked at how little adjustments to their riding completely altered their riding for the better.
Fantastic experience: Took all of my lessons with Shield and found the instructor to be excellent. Very safe when out on the road with clear instructions and a constructive summary at the end. Passed my direct access first time with no faults.
Fantastic experience: Well I have had a few lessons and think the training is superb. To me its not about getting a cup of tea its about learning riding skills. I enjoyed zipping about on a 600cc hornet and felt safe with my instructor guiding me. I will be back when money permits.
Negative experience: Done laps for 6 hours around the car park, no facilities, just a man in a van parked in a car park, very negative attitude, told me I have to go back for further lessons at 40 quid a pop, went to ace motorcycle training in Durham instead, passed first time round, felt like shields are scamming people, but each to their own I guess, just speaking from experience
