Our comment from DrivingSchoolsTOP.co.uk about DSA Test Centre:

DSA Test Centre in St Helens offers a mixed experience based on user reviews. Many customers appreciated the professionalism and clarity of certain examiners, highlighting that examiners like Paul and Darren provided excellent support, clear instructions, and created a friendly atmosphere that eased even the most nervous candidates. Their calm demeanor and encouragement during tests were frequently praised.

However, several users reported negative experiences with specific examiners, describing them as rude, unprofessional, and unable to communicate instructions effectively, leading to feelings of anxiety and disappointment. Issues such as perceived bias against non-native speakers and unfriendly interactions were common themes in the negative feedback.

Overall, while DSA Test Centre has friendly staff and clean facilities, potential candidates are advised to be prepared for variability in examiner attitudes and to consider their own comfort level when choosing this location for their driving test.

Negative experience: The fella that i had my test with wouldnt go ahead as my tyres were apparently bald, my car passed a LEGIT MOT 2 weeks prior. Seems like he just didnt want to do his job considering it was the last test of the day. Very hostile and argumentative, telling me i must be doing skids/ burn outs in my car just because its slightly modified. Probably would avoid this test centre in future and stick too a local one. Awful judgement from someone who is supposed to be ‘DVSA certified’

Negative experience: Car was turned away from a test as it apparently had bald tyres it had recently passed an mot the week before an they where advisories all 3 wear markers on the tyre had 1mm of tread above the min markers when challenged about this he threatened to stop us taking a test in the northwest

Fantastic experience: I will give a 20 Start to mr Bernard if possible , he was very calm, friendly and of a great support. He gaves instruction clearly and on time to allow you to prepare for my actions. All examiner should be trained by Mr Bernard. He knows his job.

Negative experience: I had my test yesterday at this center My examiner, whom I can't remember his name was calm and cool, his instructions were clear and precise, but I was very surprised when he said I failed with two serious faults and some minors, I'm so much disappointed, who examine the examiner.... I will try again

Negative experience: I did my driving test yesterday, I failed due to my own fault, however from the moment I met with my examiner I have a very off, abrupt feeling from her. She was a blonde lady with shorter hair. She didn’t make me feel at ease at all, infact she was very tense and kept sighing through the whole test which constantly made me feel as though I was doing something wrong and because of this my nerves hit the roof. I wouldn’t recommend doing your test here, staff aren’t friendly at all.

Negative experience: I would give zero if I could. I had test with a female examiner, unfortunately couldn’t find her name as telling so fast and quietly, not telling the instructions clearly as not considering her accent and speed of speech. I asked her a few times in the beginning of exam and emphasised English is not my first language, but just ignored She didn’t put any map for me, 20 minutes of independent navigation first and then 20 minutes of her own instructions. No map at all during the whole test. From the centre, she asked me to enter the road and follow X signs. The first roundabout, which is just after the centre, I was looking for any X sign, I couldn’t see, so I wanted to go around the roundabout to find that, no other car even near me or in the roundabout , suddenly she turned the steering wheel to the left, and shouted this wayyy. I was shocked whats going on. I looked around to see if I was going to make any incident, but no, nothing, apparently she thought I know it’s second exit but don’t know should drive into that . I was so confused why she did that , why she should take unnecessary action which definitely will cause me fail the exam, honestly, I was shocked and mad, tried to be relaxed and asked her could you please tell me what I’ve done that you took the steering? She shouted carry on, we will discuss at the end. I apologised for asking. Then in every second she was leaning towards the window and showing her hand like apology to other drivers and jesting to show she is not satisfied with my driving, and not just recording in the tablet, but on the note paper in an exaggerated manner. oh my god, I couldn’t believe how unprofessional she behaved , trying to show me loook, even if you were right in the roundabout, still you are a horrible driver. Honestly I just tried my best to not say what goes on my head and to finish the test. It’s not about passing or failing the exam. It’s about how immature behaviour she showed, trying to convince the candidate during the exam that you are going to fail this exam.

Negative experience: I'm writing this review after several unsuccessful attempts at the St Helens driving test centre. As a non-native English speaker, I found the communication with the examiners to be very challenging. My heavy accent and limited English proficiency were not taken into consideration, making it difficult to fully understand the instructions and feedback provided. Additionally, I felt a sense of discrimination due to my ethnicity and appearance. As someone with black hair and a foreign background, I felt unwelcomed by the staff and examiners. Their cold demeanor and lack of empathy created an uncomfortable and stressful environment, further hindering my ability to perform well on the driving test. One particular incident occurred during my most recent attempt when the examiner opened the window, causing the car to become extremely cold. This added discomfort only added to the already challenging situation. I strongly believe that the St Helens driving test centre should invest in providing better support for non-native English speakers and implementing diversity training for their staff. By doing so, they can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals seeking to obtain their driver's license. Overall, my experiences at the St Helens driving test centre have been disheartening and frustrating. I hope that the management takes note of these concerns and makes improvements to better serve the diverse population of drivers in the area.

Negative experience: "My experience with the driving test was disappointing. I felt that I drove carefully and followed all the necessary rules, so l expected a fairer result. Unfortunately, the explanation given for my failure wasn't clear, and I feel the evaluation wasn't as thorough or impartial as it could have been. I hope that the assessment process will be improved in the future so that candidates receive fair and transparent evaluations. If you're considering your options, you may want to find a better place to take your test."

Fantastic experience: My daughter has taken two tests here at St Helens and I cannot fault the centre of the staff. When she failed the first time the examiner was really nice to her and explained what she had done wrong, I cannot fault him for his attitude towards her. She took it again, I think the examiners name was Paul who was again, very polite and professional and explained things well. The centre and the toilets were clean and tidy on both occasions and whilst I can’t say I enjoyed the stress of sitting there waiting, I cannot fault the centre or the staff.

Negative experience: I have been driving for over 15 years and a truck driver for 5 years, I have wanted to do my motorbike licence for some time now. Did my CBT and then wanted my bigger bike licence, did my mod 1 at Saint Helens test centre. Unfortunately I was not successful, the examiner was clear with his instructions, I failed and that is on me. However, after my test the examiner took me in an office for a de-brief and the first words spoken to me was "well you have a lot of problems" and sort of had a go at me on the things I did wrong. I'm all for constructive criticism but when you are a grown man, with a mortgage and kids of my own being spoken to like a child that is just wrong and disrespectful. It was very discouraging because I already felt down and then the examiner put me down further. There was nothing constructive in his comments no recommendations for improvement just negative feedback. I had to keep my calm and walk out because his attitude towards me was appalling. I will not be returning there to try again, I will go to Atherton where the staff are much more professional and friendly.

Fantastic experience: I understand that some folk would be disappointed if they fail their test. I failed and was certainly very disappointed. That said, my failure wasn't the fault of the DSA centre, the staff were excellent, friendly and accommodating. Their guidance was clear and the building and facilities were, again, without fault. The roads and routes around the test area are real world conditions that one will have to navigate after passing your test. Narrow roads, poorly painted markings, parked cars and everything else the real world of driving has to offer. This again is not the fault of the test centre. If you fail your test you fail for a reason, and that reason is you made mistakes. Learn from them and don't give up and don't blame anyone else, especially the staff of this excellent centre.

Negative experience: Son now had 4 driving tests at St Helens same examiner 3 times. Failed again on his way back to test centre. Did 24 in a 20 but adjusted his speed when he realised. Surely that is a minor not a serious fault as that is supposed to be when endangering other road users or yourself! it was his first mistake he only had 3 minors! Money making outfit

Negative experience: Well , were were 5 minutes late for Jake's test today 28th may jake told me it was 1.30pm when it was 1.15pm we arrived at 1.19 pm . Jake needed the toilet before his exam , one of the instructors came up to me quite rude saying i was late for my test , i explained it was jake who was taking the test at the time of 1.30pm. felt bad as it was 1.15pm jakes and my stomach sank we were gutted. I believe they had every right to cancel the test , but jake was asked for all his details in a very cold manner and i felt really bad, so imagine how jake was feeling we felt like we had walked into a stressful environment. Jake went on his test and i just sat in the centre feeling gutted for jake as the 2 staff members made him feel absolutely deflated. We made a guinuine human mistake and felt really bad so it wasn't the best of start to his test , i asked to speak to the gentleman inside the office as i felt he could of handled the situation better. I asked him could we speak privately. In the room where we spoke he made it very clear with his arms folded that they have a very tight schedule, i said i fully understand that but i felt the way he came over when we got there was inappropriate and wasn't necessary, there was other people there too motorbike instructors x2. I put it to him that i felt my son had been put under more pressure now for his test and that he and the lady instructor could of handled this better. This mans behaviour towards me was somewhat intimidating he told me he had been at the job for 22 years!!! Don't know what that had to do with it. The way he handled my concerns made me even more uncomfortable with his poor attitude towards me he wasn't prepared to listen to me at all and said he was leaving the room, to which i said I wanted his managers number, he never came back to me and left me even more upset about the situation. My son failed his test although i think he did pretty well under the circumstances he was driving 24 , in a 20 mile zone we accept that, what i dont accept is the way this man was rude to me from the moment we stepped in the centre. Yes we accept we wre slightly late as i mentioned above. But this could of been handled more professionally. I await your response Deborah Allen

Fantastic experience: Done my mod 1 and mod 2 with Darren, what an asset to St Helen’s he is, he is calm in his approach, with very clear instructions. He is a fair examiner, and puts someone who struggles with overthinking and nerves to ease from the minute you meet him, by generally being a nice guy!

Katie O'Mahoney (View the Generation) 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: I wanted to thank my examiner today on such a pleasant experience. This was my second time taking the test and the experience was vastly different. I believe that examiners name was Paul, however I'm not 100% He was a lovely man, who put me at ease straight away. He was extremely calm and allowed me to drive without interruption. I felt like he didn't go into the test with the intention of failing me. It was such a lovely experience and after being a nervous wreck after my last test was cancelled, getting closer to my due date (8 months pregnant) and my instructor being on holiday, I've come away extremely pleased. So, if you're the instructor who passed a heavily pregnant woman on the 2nd May, thank you very much!

Fantastic experience: I wanted to thank Lona, she is very pleasant and professional in her work. But for everyone who is planning to take the test in St. Helens, keep in mind that there are a lot of roundabouts, very worn markings, and poor quality roads

Negative experience: Absolute nightmare, they keep changing my partner’s slot randomly and last minute even outside of the strikes. This is costing more money in terms of insurance and causing chaos with dates. The system is really poor and genuinely infuriating.

Negative experience: My stepson took his test here today, I'm glad he wanted me to sit in the test as the examiner was not the most pleasant of people, he came across as arrogant and really off with us. He didn't seem happy that my stepson wanted me in with them.

Fantastic experience: I just passed my practical test, the examiner “Big Rob” was really very professional and clear throughout the entire journey. Before starting my test I was very apprehensive and scared after reding the reviews and I hadn't done any practical classes in St Helens yet, and I still managed to pass. I believe that self-confidence and driving experience make all the difference. I would like to express my most sincere thanks to my examiner and I could not fail to give 5 stars to the DSA test center. Thank you

Positive experience: I have just had my test with Paul he made me feel at ease right at the beginning of my test, he spoke to me and understood the way I listen to instructions and followed through with this, I am extremely grateful I had him as my examiner and would highly recommend him to any learning going for there test. He was calm with everything we did, I felt like I was on another lesson. Thankyou so much Paul, you are an amazing examiner. The reason for the 3 star is not all examiners are this way, my first test with a different examiner was not an experience I enjoyed and would highly recommend he tries to be more nicer to his students. Other wise it would have been a 5* from my experience with Paul today.

Negative experience: My son took his test here in his own car with a older woman short hair reminded me of an ex school teacher when i saw her. She was so rude and arrogant to my son on his test he ended up abandoning his test and telling her to get out his car after she refused to take him back to the test centre. Absolutely disgusting, i would advise any young adults not to take their test here.

Fantastic experience: Hi everyone, I just failed my driving test my examiner was Paul, he was very professional and I was comfortable all through I reversed and climbed the kerb. So yes my experience is they want to be sure you can control the car fully, the test must be taken seriously as driving on our roads is a big deal. Am grateful for the points he raised and I will work on them. And come back when am sure thanks Paul. Keep our roads safe.

Negative experience: Would give it -1 stars if I could! Would never recommend this test centre absolutely disgusting behaviour from staff. Rude woman blonde short hair. Instantly felt on edge because she was so rude and failed me within a couple of minutes for something that really wasn’t so serious and said I was dangerous! Needs teaching how to be polite!!!! Not to mention the routes they take you on are a joke tiny squished side streets. Awful routes would never use this test centre again!!

Negative experience: How do you fail a DRIVING test without starting the engine. This1 examiner is abosolute joke. He must have passed 1 first because we all know its not about if you can drive its about making money pass so many and failing so many in a day. Joke the examiner thinks he a mechanic.

Stan's Math Hacks 2 years ago

Negative experience: The test centre has a lot of cancellations for a very good reason. The examiner I had was ok, but St Helen’s itself is possibly the worst place to drive in in the country. I failed because a van pulled out in front of me, and one road was too narrow for my (already small) car. Additionally, the majority of road markings are deteriorated beyond recognition, making driving correctly a complete gamble. I cannot highly enough recommend against taking your test here.

Negative experience: Appalling experience at the St Helens test Center. My examiner (white female with short hair) whose name I can’t remember failed me by LYING about mistakes that I made! My instructor was also shocked as I was more than ready for the test. If you’re a person of colour it’s probably best to steer clear of this test centre because it’s obvious there’s a bias and prejudice strong enough to allow examiners to feel like it’s okay to LIE about results.

Positive experience: I used this centre for my Motorcycle Mod 1 & 2 tests. Not being from the area I found the test routes quite difficult. They are full of weird junctions, non-standard multi-lane roundabouts and narrow side roads. The test centre itself is in a terrible spot right next to a very busy junction and local road users come across dis-courteous and oblivious to you being on a training/tests. Also St. Helens council should be ashamed of themselves, the general state of the roads around here are appalling. I’ve never seen to many huge pot holes. The Mod1 Test needs looking at, it’s feels very un-natural and dangerous and riders have been injured and even killed at this test centre previously. On the plus side the examiners seem fair and I managed to pass my tests without any issues but my recommendation for new riders would be to look at Atherton or even Southport centres instead as they seem to have easier routes.

Fantastic experience: First time ever I’ve had a pupil come back off test and said she enjoyed her driving test, even pupils who pass don’t say it’s enjoyable. However this was all down to the examiner Robbie, his approach and his manner made Sophie feel really comfortable and calm and although she is a good driver I feel she was able to demonstrate this because she was made to feel relaxed, thank you.

Betta Salvan 3 years ago

Negative experience: i could give minus one. What happened is that I was driving and I already failed the exam. He (i dont remember if the name was frank or something) asked me to pull over and I did. I took that as an opportunity for me to ask him if I already failed the test and he told me that I actually failed it. After that I asked him to go back to the centre and he refused and he said that we can't go back because he needs to follow a routine. In my case, I drove with the same car for 1½ hour to arrive to the centre and I really didn't want to drive any further knowing that I already failed. It was a waste of time and fuel (which is very expensive these days). Also I was in shock, I couldn't react properly and I ended up doing more mistakes. I found his behaviour really dangerous. He shouldn't tell people that they fail and allow them to continue the test. (i googled it and yes, examiner are allowed to stop the test earlier). I was very vulnerable after knowing the result and anything could have happened. In fact, my mom that was at the centre was the one that drove me home as I was too upset to drive. I always been told that driving is a skill that requires full participation and a lot of attention, which obviously I wasn't capable that time. Is not rare to hear situations where the driver is upset or simply angry and ends up in a car crash. Was my mom's car so even though he was there I was in charge of the breaks. I really tried my best to control myself during the test even though I was getting more upset every second that was passing. At this point I don't know if he did it out of malice or racism. I don't know if he was aiming of me to get an accident so that the insurance could pay him. I don't know what was his plan and why he told me that news in that way and in that time. I admit that is me that I asked for the result, but as he was capable of saying that "he's not allowed due to his routine" i think he could have be capable of saying "im not allowed to tell you this till you finish your test". Felt like doing a test with a robot. Didn't even say "I'm sorry to inform you" he just said "as you asking, yes you failed" and after that told me to continue the test just because of his routine. As I was in shock I couldn't think straight and didnt realize the risk that I was taking as I was that vulnerable that I was almost crying in front of him. I reported to dvsa , but as I reported him more than a week ago I doubt they will do anything about it. GUYS, PEOPLE ON THE REVIEWS SAYING THAT ARE ROBOTIC AND ARENT VERY FRIENDLY WITH FOREIGNER ARE LEGIT. IS VERY TRUE. ALL THE BRITISH WERE PASSING AND ANOTHER GUY WAS THERE AND WASNT BRITISH FAILED AS WELL.

Negative experience: Took a member of family for their driving test which he unfortunately failed. When we went into the test centre to ask them to explain what he had failed on so he could learn for next time, the RUDE lady laughed, other members of staff tried to have input when they were not aware of his faults and then to add to this, another member of staff was pointing telling us to leave. I politely asked the lady not laugh, the staff here are incredibly ignorant. I am guessing that because English is not our first language they thought they could mock us…. Just disgusting!!!!! The 3 rude members of staff refused to give their names so we could report them, the manager then threatened us with the police unless we leave. Absolutely appalling treatment when all we initially asked for was an explanation of which area of the test he failed on. In future will definitely AVOID this test centre! If I had the choice I would give them zero stars…..

This review is inspite of the fact that I didn't pass on this occasion because of bus lane, overspeeding and moving off without checking blind spots. Passed two weeks later- another centre :)

Fantastic experience: Everything was set out with covid restrictions in place. My examiner was kind and friendly and put my nerves at ease. Easy to find and easily accessible

Fantastic experience: Sat my MOD 1 in July, friendly examiners and a great place to go for your test. Sat my MOD 2 today with Paul Costello in poor weather, he gave clear instructions of what he wanted you to do, everything was explained clearly. Had a great experience for both tests and even managed to pass both tests with no riding faults.

Negative experience: My son took his Theory test at this test centre. Due to bad weather we were caught up in traffic and only just made it ontime, despite leaving ample time for the journey. The lady at the test centre was extremely rude to my son when he tried to apologise. She said 'what do you expect it's rush hour'. My poor son was really upset by this. This is no way to speak to a young lad who is trying to apologise. Please can the staff at this centre recieve some 'customer service training'. There seem to be a lot of complaints on here about their attitude.

Negative experience: Unprofessional 2 lady instructors failed one person for minor issues one of them talked all the way through and both had poor people skills don’t use this test centre talk about robbing your money second test cost £150 no words talk about knocking young people’s confidence shocking
